I know it is straw, I meant rolled the growing crop in the early spring with the Cambridge rolls, or was it too wet? I lived on a farm for 40 odd years for crying out loud, so I know what I am talking about!
Oh yes we did and everyone else did around me. Usually in March while the crop is small, not during frosty weather of course and before it starts to tiller out . Especially on light land or if the frosts had caused the land to 'heave' over the winter. It helps to conserve moisture. Many years ago farmers used to run a light set of harrows through wheat in the spring! In fact the practice is coming back in a way among the organic boys. e.g. Google "Hatzenbichler-Harrow comb"
