Its amazing how many people bow down to rhoads...there's a bunch of bettter players out there and I wonder if people would be so fanatical about him if he had never died. Anyhow Joe did a very good job in his tenure.every guitarist ozzy had put there own stamp on the material.
i got the awesome privilege of getting to be a student of Joe's for about a year.. he was the coolest fucking guy.. He was taught by randy rhoads for a while himself
Joe Holmes is very good, Randy Rhoads was his Teacher when Joe Holmes was young. And it´s not Truth about his Stratocaster cuz he use Humbucker like a Les Paul too...Like Jake E Lee,
i like Zakk Wylde too but he try always to improve Randy but he put always his damn pinch harmonics in everywhere in this Songs
dude, zakk harmonics are his trademark, is like you complain cause EVH is using tapping... i mean, you may not like his style, but that was what made him famous and inovative at that time!

Do you really want to know why Joe didn't play long enough for Ozzy? Because Ozzy hated the sound of Strats. Ozzy also prefers the sound of the Les Pauls. That's the reason why Joe didn't play long enough for OzzY.
Who says that? Ozzy hates the sound of the Strat? Please, Jake E Lee recorded two discs with Ozzy and he play a Charvel Strat. After the RR death, Brad Gillis, was the guitarist of Ozzy in the Tour Speak of the Devil, and he play a Strat. Joe Holmes, replaces Zakk and he play a Strat.
The only two guitarists of Ozzy who used LesPaul, are Randy and Zakk .
Three excellent guitarists using Stratocaster, is not too much for a person who hates them? Please
well that the biggest load a crap ive ever heard...I saw the interview, Ozzy ditched Joe simply for the fact that the fans wanted Zakk back. So when it came time to record, out went Joe. Hell, at least he had the chance to grace the stage with The KING for 4 years...BTW, Joe's sound & style was great."Ozzy dont like strats"..PLEASE
Ozzy is very demanding with its musicians, especially with its guitarists, is necessary to be really good for play in its band. Joe Holes is great guitarrist, he play guitar no make big noise like Zakk. My favorite guitarists of Ozzy, are, Randy, of corse, Jake E Lee, excellent. and Joe Holmes. I must mention Brad Guillis that did a wonderful work in the 82 when Randy died.
Zakk is good but he use much distortion, I like clean sound like Randy.
i think zakk like to treat his guitar like a pig. and randy treated it like a princess. I mean look at how they both yell diferent, one squeals, the other sings.
The sound of of Randy are sublime. Randy play relax, he play with feeling, its sound is clear, crystalline. A virtuoso. Zakk play like a lunatic. Zakk is only big noise with a little compass. If you listen Zakk in Black Lable Society, is not nothing spectacular. Zakk sounds well when he play the RR original songs.
I know a lot of people rip on Joe Holmes (generally because he's not Zakk) but I saw Joe live years ago in Sioux Falls, SD (not kidding) and the guy can play. I have heard that he was a student of Randy Rhodes but the time-line there seems suspicious in that Joe would have had to be pretty young. Anyone know if that is true? If so, I can see the influence, and if not, then I can see the respect for RR's playing.
Yes this is true. I saw him as well in Houston. My brother met him back stage and he told my brother he went to Randy's school. He is one of my favorite players. Do you know where he is or what happened to him?
I'm not sure what happened to Joe. I have heard a few rumors about some of what went down with Ozzy, namely that Ozzy wasn't all that happy with Joe in the studio and so decided to bring Zakk back in for the past two studio releases. I still like Joe, still wish that he had perhaps been around when Ozzy was more popular as a musician (as opposed to spectacle on MTV) but oh well. I think Joe pays more respect to Randy's solos than either Zakk or Jake. Just my opinion.
Joe Holmes played this song beautifully, it's such a shame that he's so underated. I saw him at Ozzfest 98 and he was superb. Is there more to this concert? I'd love to see it.
Dave didn't write the solo to Ride and he shure as hell didn't play it. Kirk copied Hit Lights solo somewhat from Dave, but I guarantee Dave wouldn't have played it that well (listen to the demos). Terrible?! Come on dude! Eddie is terrible because any kid today can play Eruption. ;)
You probaly think Dylan Mckay is a badass guitar player haha.
Dumbasses!!! Think for yourself... just because the "master" teaches someone doesn't mean that they are gonna be good just because. If you really think he's that good, that's great -- but too many people keep talking up the whole Randy Rhoads student crap. So if Bruce Lee taught me, of course I should be able to kick everyone's ass right -- whatever happened to judgement based on skill level?
I totally agree about Kirk Hammett. He is not the guitar player that he is held up to be. He doesn't even play rythym guitar on a single Metallica album because Hetfield is so much cleaner than Hammett in that department. He never has blown my mind with any of his playing.
Kirk is far from terrible. Was he a huge innovator? probaly not. definetely not terrible. Listen to One, Hit the Lights, Ride the Lightning, Dyer's Eve, and then tell me this guy is "terrible". You don't know what your talking about.
You don't know what you're talking about, seeing how both Hit The Lights and Ride The Lightning were written by Dave Mustaine, so suck it. And as far as One goes, well anyone could've written a solo like that, it's mostly just tapping and bending, nothing too amazing. And I didn't listen to Dyers Eve because when I got "Justice" I was extremely dissapointed with how bland and mediocre it sounded.
RR was the best, thats just my personal opinion. He wrote the material he played. You gotta give it up for Joe Holmes because hes a hella lot better than me
it's context. if you were 15 at the time blizzard of oz came out you would have been blown away. listen to anything else from 1981 other than van halen and it was just recycled. its like ted nugent was a guitar hero then
Been trying to find more info on Joe Holmes the past couple of days, since seeing him on the Randy Rhoads 20th Anniversary Memorial series here on YouTube. I'm sad to say that as HUGE a Randy fan as I am, I was unaware of this guy and the fact that he was one of Randy's students. That's quite a thing to have on your resume. I am definitely NOT disappointed. He does the songs justice. Awesome job. Incredible. I guess we learn something new everyday. Have a kick-ass day everybody.
