We sang this song in choir at the very end of grade 12. I loved the bits out of it because it's just so pretty and nostalgic and fanciful. The arrangement was just gorgeous and it was a really nice change from some of the stuff we had been singing at the time.
I love this song, simply because it has such an important meaning to me. I've never been to the Mira though. I'm about to turn fourteen in an hour, but I can still remember as a little girl sitting out on the porch in the summer, laying with my dad.
He'd sing this to me over and over until we had to go inside. Just hearing this song brings me to tears now.
I can shamelessly admit I would rather listen to this than the crappy pop music people expect me to like.
It's a different part of the country, but this song always reminds me of our river, our cottage and the sweet little town we drive through to get there. Heart-warming stuff.
Out on the Myra on warms afternoons old men go fishing with black line and spoons. And if they catch nothing, they never complain I wish I was with them again Can you imagine a piece of the universe more fit for princes and kings? I trade you ten of your cities for Marion Bridge and the pleasure it brings. Out on the Myra the people are kind, they treat you to home-brew and help you unwind. And if you come broken, they see that you to mend Oh, I wish I was with them again.
I think the song is song by a group called mckinty the played in pubs in Halifax in the early 70.s I use to see this group at the Dick Turpen Pub in Scotia Square Mall when I was in the Navy
Wonderful rendition and great pictures. Mira is one of the most beautiful places in the whole world. My father and his family grew up in Grand Mira North. Lil' bit of Heaven.
What fond memories they are. I look at your photos and imagine easily that they could be ours. To the LeBlanc's - thank you so much. Lynn Briand (3 cottages down) - between Morrison's and Chiasson's
I discovered the Mira quite by accident while wandering around Cape Breton.
What an experience---I can't wait to come back.
The first look I had was crossing the bridge where the river meets the bay on
the way to Louisbourg. I have been to Nova Scotia three times now and each time discover something unforgetable. The Mira was the surprise during my most recent visit. Beautiful!
OMG! I go swimming there when I was down home as a kid. I'm lucky to be moving home this summer and I'm SO excited. Thank God for this music on here! It makes the homesickness a little less harder to bear.
when i hear this song it reminds me of a song sung by another,it just goes to show that the Irish of Cape Breton are live and well.its a pity we are so far apart in the world.Ireland's culture is not what it use to be,its kinda sad. i hope to visit Cap Breton some day, i knew there was a big Irish culture in Canada,i never knew it was so big.and i hope you still speak Breton,or as we call it, Gaelic,i am curious to know the other half of my culture.
by far the best version on this site of this song. I worked with Allister when I was part of the crew on New Waterford Girl, in 1999. Nice song, written by a really nice guy.
I'm living in Ontario right now while I complete my graduate studies...I can't wait to come back to the island this summer and spend some time on the Mira.
Cape Breton is where my heart will always be <3 nothing beats the bonfires, boats, beaches, Main Event, Lick a Chick, Main Event, tea&squares, Baddeck and just the amazing people and just being in Cape Breton <3
Hey, does anyone know the song, i think it is by John Allan Cameron, and it goes "I got a cold tin penny in my hand. It's a quarter to 1 and the fun's just begun..."??? If so please REPLY to this message so I know someone has commented. Thanks
I believe the name of the song is "Good Times" and it is indeed by John Allen Cameron. In each verse, he mentions yet another brand of beer, right? A sweet and witty song, I think.
Jezx21, just remember hun it's always in our hearts so that means your never far away from the ocean smell and the friendly environments of kitchen parties and bomb fires as long as you don't forget where your roots are too. I love the island myself i only get to see it every couple years now...unfortunately! but nothing beats the "lick a chick" or the "Cabot trail"
This is John Allan Cameron's rendition of the song but I believe it was actually written in 1973 by Allister MacGillivray. I just thought I'd point that out. It's a great song!
About once a year, I hear some stunning song, and I go online to find out about it and basically it turns out it's some Canadian song that like everyone in Canada knows.
It continues to irritate me how little exposure Canadian things get in the United States considering how we rudely spray all of the dregs of our culture down here across their television, newspapers, and movie screens.
The charms of Canada continue to require no cultural translation, for me, at least.
brings me to tears, just like my mom's old pictures of her youth in Nova Scotia. We played this song at her memorial. I want to go visit her stomping grounds as soon as I can. so proud to be part Maritimer. thank you, excellent job.
I like your video...I heard part of this song in the movie New Waterford Girl and really liked it...although none are good as the partial version in the movie...that I've come across. This one is good...I'm an american who loves everything canadian...I just watched Da Vinci's inquest and will now tivo corner gas...:)
