No doubt the F800gs is probably the "right" choice over its japanese cousins. Its just so horribly expensive in the USA. The KLR or XT can be kitted out with everything you could possibly want and still not come within 3/4 the price of the F800 with no kit. I'm tempted to buy one when in the UK or DE, but shipping it and registering it ends up not saving the money either. I can easily afford the 800 or even 1200gsa but its just not a value.
The problem as always is weight, 400lb bikes are too heavy to do much more than fire roads, or desert. Forget tight woods trails of the NE. This bike will quickly get in trouble if it encounters anything rough, tight or steep. You can see him fighting the weight in this vid. Until some manufacturer produces a large bore 2 cylinder (ETEK) direct injected 2 stroke or 4 stroke with 70+hp stock, that weighs in at under 300lbs, the concept of road worthy large displacement enduros will suck.
The problem with this bike is it only has a 16 litre tank, on long trips pulling into servos all the time would be a pain in the backside not everyone wants to putt around the back tracks of suburnbia like grandpa is in the clip. Im looking at making a trip after the soccer world cup next year up through Africa but come on 16 litres or about 300 clicks per tank might be stretching it in some parts,
I think we know what bikes Ewan and Charlie will be riding on their next adventure. The 1200 GSs were way too heavy for real off-road riding. This one looks just right.
These GS bikes are incredible off road, Ive ridden both the 650 and 1200 on some long off road tours through Death Valley and Northern Nevada. Their beasts out on the trails, Ive yet yo be dissapointed, looking forward to the f800 :-)

I vote for the 800. the 15hp difference to be more agile is worth it..and it weighs 392 pounds, and of course fuel in these trying times...

Gs 800 is much more versatile. The GS 1200 its an European bike. made for easy tracks .

get a bigger tank, or carry additional canysters with gas ... or get the adventure

Wow.. 300Km per? That's not great.

@buzzkillor
You can get a Touratech tank which will give you 33 liters (approxx 500 - 600 Km / tank)

Fuel fill location sucks, bmw making sure you aren't able to use cheap throw-over saddle bags....

Okay, grandma did a nice job there. How does the machine work if someone was to actually open the throttle a bit...?
roadrage638 2 years ago
they should build the f800 lighter still, bit of a cow offroad :-/ the even bigger ones are just ridiculous :-P

Good looking bike but.............Why pay $10,000 bucks for something that I've seen guys on KLR's do?
Must be a snob thing?

totally. They're not big guys and half their problem is picking up those huge bikes - after the 10th time, I imagine they were exhausted.
