  • I drink this and a i also eat whole wheat bagel with fat free peanut butter smeared on it which works great after my workouts!

  • dude ya need carbs after a workout

  • Have you tried Bonavitas R12? It's the best recovery drink and the latest revolutionary product out on the market. It blows P90x out the window.

  • @SarahGoez -your right. I checked Bonavitas R12 out and am going to give this one a try. Thanks for the tip! : D

  • I am looking for a good recovery drink for weight loss, i am doing p90x im on day 17... i am lactose intolerant so milk is out for me... would isopure work for me?

  • @blissman20 You should try Bonavitas R12. It has 26 grams less sugar than P90x's recovery drink. And 10 grams of protein, plenty of antioxidants equaling 7 cups of blueberries and lots of vitamins and minerals. All natural. You can mix it with water/ice.

  • I will not argue there are some good nutrients in milk, but for people who are concerned about their health it is my no means the best. Milk has a large amounts of estrogen in it which has many significant health risks associated to it.

  • I read a big study from a university(don't recall which one) comparing different recovery formula. The best that they could find was drink milk after exercise. Many professionals athletes.

So do not waist your money in recovery formulas or something not as natural as the milk. With the money you save pay the gym or go for a nice dinner with someone.

  • CHOCOLATE MILK is the best after a workout!!

  • Question re. the recovery drink and an after workout drink. I am on week 6 of P90X. I weigh 180, 5’5, 37 yrs old. Can you help me come up with a correct mixture. I have Cyto Carb2, Gatorade Lemon Lime mix(powder) and Pure WPI by Bioplex….plz

  • I use to use choco milk (1%) 500ml + half scoop protein. And believe me bro, it'll work best. :) Has the carbs, best protein's (casein and fast release). Btw, I actually have a 6 pack. So for those thinking that it's not "good", believe me when I say it is. :D Plus, $4-7/week for it.

  • @jagsaiyan 4-7$ a week? cant go wrong with that.

  • @jagsaiyan but in their drink they have Creatine what do you sub forthat?

  • @Vancouverjason1 If you want creatine in your diet, throw a spoon of creatine mono into the choco milk. I did that when I was on my creatine cycle (2 months at a time). You cant always be on creatine anyways..

  • @jagsaiyan Always dissolve your creatine in warm water first, otherwise you will waist most of it and damage your stomach.

  • @tomsgoogle Is there research showing warm water is preferred? I've never heard that before.. time to look into that. Interesting to learn new things. :P

  • just tattoos o muscle

  • Man, there's a lot of bad information out there. Zero carb for a recovery drink??? Thats just plain crazy. The P90X drink is good and if anything do what I did and try to copy the specifications or ingredients as much as possible. I use Optimum recvoer 2:1. 3/4 of a scoop with 3/4 of a bannana to give it the 4:1 ratio recomended by P90x and other body building professionals. I'm sure you could use ISOPURE, just kick it up with a bannana to give it some "good carbs".

  • The reason this has no carbs is because it has SUCRALOSE!!! Sucralose as well as any fake sugars are very bad for you. Look up the history of Aspartame. We all need to be aware of what we are putting in our bodies otherwise what's the point in being healthy?

  • We as Americans seem to think we need some damn product after working out. Just blend bananas and greens and get over your self. Raw fruits and vegetables can build massive lean bodies. Search Doug Graham and John hinds on tube.

  • Gibz101 tell it! All these people are wasting their money and ingesting god knows what. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables and drink water. Same results, cheaper and safer.

  • Isn't chocolate milk cheaper?

  • Awesome!!!!thank you so much for putting this up here. Am actually like a few hours away to begin my journey until I ran into your page by luck since today am actually shopping for my last few supplies.

  • carbs before bed is not a bad thing at all..if you have been workng out on a reglular basis, your matabolism will be plenty fast enough to process them and your muscles will be demanding them to replace spent glycogen. if you are worrying about catb intake, then i suspect that maybe you have fallen off the p90x path a little and your watching carb intake to compensate. Isopure is a decent protien powder but you can by a much cheaper(price wise) version and with proper diet get great results.

  • Isopure is the best...minus the added artificial chemical dyes....

  • so if it's just like P90x drink it has Creatine in it an it taste good i bet you it has a lot of sugar in it carbs are not the only bad thing here FYI if it taste really good spit it out

  • hey mann thanks alot for the video just the information iwas lookin for,

  • I love the p90x recovery drink. It literally tastes like an orange cream shake. It isn't a thick consistency and I always enjoy drinking it

  • @LilM0 are you serious? Just started P90X and would love to down ice cold chocolate milk after my workouts!

  • Hey, just found this video...I love Isopure, been using it for months now...I've been taking 2 scoops after my P90X workouts, according to the label, too much?

I also throw in some creatine (someone gave it to me, almost out, not going to take it again) and glutamine-L...Good video man!

  • The 40g of carbs in p90x recovery drink is in the form of processed Fructose..not a good form of carb to be injesting

  • The point of the recovery drink is to have carbs. Carbs=fast energy, they make sure that those recovery drinks have a lot of carbs so that you get your energy replenished after the hard work out.

  • This dude don't need vitamins, save it for those kids in Africa.

  • Odd. I was under the impression that carbs are good, if not necessary, when it came to a 'recovery drink'.

  • I drink 2-3 cups of light chocolate silk. You want around 40g of carbohydrates. The carbo/protein ratio is 5 to 1.

  • Just so you know, the purpose of the recovery drink is to recover your GLYCOGEN stores. Glycogen is the storage form of carbohydrate that you have in your mucles (and liver) in order to provide the energy you need for your workouts. Obviously, you want protein throughout the day to help rebuild muscle fibers you've broken down from the workout, but the 30 minute window after the workout is not the time to do that-you WANT carbohydrate, otherwise, your next workout will lack. Huge difference.

  • @meganfit Good point

  • @meganfit Agreed. I thought the POINT of recovery drink was to replenish carbs/sugar, which allows the protein to piggyback in for synthesis.

  • I use Equate Ultra, Walmarts brand of Slimfast after my Insanity workout. Buy a 12 pack for 8.50, 180cal 24g carbs 10g protien 17g sugar. Cheap and effective.

  • Comment removed

  • thanks for the advice! let's just be aware that carbs ARE important after a workout. The body need those in order to be able to actually use the protein intake for muscle repair, etc. Taking proteins and no carbs at all after a workout won't have nearly the same effect as taking a good ratio of carbs/protein (4:1 some experts say)

    cheers

  • @alexolvel Some say 3:1. Check us out. We are an all-natural sports supplement company co-owned by Atlanta Falcons tight end, Tony Gonzalez.

  • @alexolvel Carbs are only essential if you're doing multiple workouts, otherwise you don't need to refill what you're not going to use.

  • I agree with Lilmo save your cash and drink lowfat chocolate milk

  • milk, bananas, honey, blend it, enjoy

  • @captaincocain, he doesnt say anything bout substituting carbs. he calls this video "alternative P90x RECOVERY drink" and then goes on to say that it has totally different nutrional value than what you get with the actual recovery drink. that is the reason why i called him a retarded dope. if he had have called the video "excellent protein drink" then i wouldnt have called him that. are you pickin up what im puttin down? talk to Back2Dixie if you hav any further enquiries on the matter.

  • Not comparable to the recovery drink. You NEED the carbs after a workout to replenish glycogen levels and to much protein can hinder this absorption by the cells.

  • @DaG37boy Your right it's not comparable...It's Better !

  • @Back2Dixie OK. Keep telling yourself that and taking low carbs and high protein right after an intense workout.

  • Comment removed

  • @DaG37boy Im a bodybuilder but I like the P90X program for leaning up, Ive been lifting for 20 years and I know how to use supplements. But thank you for your vast experience and info. Ill take it into consideration.......FLUSH , SWIRL ...

  • @Back2Dixie STFU and STFU .. Ur an idiot

  • @Back2Dixie

if your a bodybuilder help me

i did the p90x chest back and im still sore for like 3 days

2nd day i was sore bad....

    is that normal ?

  • @Riza353 lol its a good thing dude, ur working hard keep it up

  • @DaG37boy But too many carbs can spike insulin in your blood, inhibiting your natural growth hormones. Tony Horton is focused more on fitness than muscle building, and the P90X recovery drink exemplifies that. The lack of carbs is easily offset with a sandwich, some fruit, or a glass of juice or milk. I'd rather have more control over the carb intake (and type of carbs) than the P90X formula allows. It's all about what your own goals are.

  • Has anyone tired Endurox R4, im think of getting it.

  • you can also go to the gas station gatorade has a new recovery drink

  • i use a product called insu-pro by a company known as empyrean. as far as i know, it is the best on the market. watermelon taste fantastic. 50g of protein??? im pretty sure your body cant absorb that much unless it is hydrolized and ultra pure. which iso pure is not. and yeah, u do need carbs after a workout like p90x. u do plyo for an hour and deplete carbs and 1000 callories, you'll burn out. carbs aren't that bad if you use them. just sayin.

  • this lad is retarded. hes gotten himself a protein powder not a recovery drink. you need the carbs after a workout. dope

  • @waldorfish In his case it seems like he does his workouts slightly before bed time, you don't want a lot of carbs before you go to bed, those carbs will be stored as fat.

  • @waldorfish Who says he doesn't eat anything afterwards? This simply gives him more control over his carb intake. And what if he's diabetic? Still think he's a retarded dope for wanting more control over what he puts in his body?

  • how are they comparable. they have a much different protein ratio. a much different carb ratio. and a much different vitamin ratio. they are complete opposites lol not comparable at all.

  • Yep! Except vits A,D,E,K most of the rest of the vits get pissed out anyhow... You know as much as hundreds of thousands in medical education has gotten me :). Good videos.

  • That stuff doesn't sound at all equivalent to the P90X recovery formula. The most important part of a recovery shake is the carbs.

  • i take mutant mass for recovery and it has 52 grams of protein and 1060 calories so if you are skinny like me it really helps to gain weight and muscle. Also take lots of vitamins. I have gained 10 pounds a month. I was extremely skinny so this saved my social life lol

  • Does vanilla almond milk work as good as low fat almond milk?

  • Lol random guy just pops up

  • does n e one know a replacement for the shakeology if u would let me kno be much appreciated thanks

  • guys accelerade orange is absoloutley the exact same as the recovery drink fo rflavor and nutrition facts

  • Good video! Remember to warn viewers about the LIVER DANGER of too much protein. So, get the EXTRA that you need but careful not to get any excess, best to be a little LOW than too high... odd, isn't it? Just eat within one hour of your intense muscle loading activity or it might be really wasted.... and SLEEP EXTRA to build mass and recover best!

  • OK let me save you some time, take that stuff and $50 go to the bathroom and pour it into the toilet then take the $50 and put that in as well, then flush. Now go to the store and buy a $1 bottle of LOW FAT CHOCOLATE MILK and drink it....same result.

  • @TeamWhiteTiger1 What if the milk is 2%?

  • Good:

Chocolate Milk is quick and easy.

    Best:

Ice Cream (2 scoops) with Whey Protein Isolate (not concentrate) is best for muscle and recovery.

  • most these proteins are just too much protein for you to actually use at once-flushing it down the toilet--don't buy into the protein manufacturers hype -you dont need all that! Endurox (4:1 ratio)is a great recovery drink as is choc milk(3:1 ratio).

Key really is the carb-simple after a workout to boost insulin -been found that high protein diets may actually inhibit protein synthesis.

  • I just started my fourth week of P90X. I'll tell you what, I haven't been on their recovery drink, and I'm going to say it's not worth it. This man that works at my local GNC, Dan, is a health fanatic. He told me everything and countered my arguments. However, the product I'm going to recommend is only if you have a slim build and are wanting to get bulk. It's called ISO Mass Extreme Gainer. It's fantastic. I'm already seeing big results from using this product.

  • Best recovery = Whey Protein + Gatorade. Whey pre workout, Gatorade on workout, Whey and possibly Gatorade post workout. and casein protein or cottage cheese at night of course

  • im not gonna lie man. i watched this vid and went and bot the mango isopure and i threw up.

  • This is actually not a recovery drink nor is it comparable to the P90x formula for many reasons. The premise behind the P90x recovery drink or any carb/protein recovery drink is that there is a 4:1 ratio of carb to protein which inhibits the catabolic hormone, cortisol, and stimulates insulin, thus replenishing lost glycogen stores. If your protein is higher than this ratio, then the drink ceases to be a recovery drink. I have actually have found a comparable one and its called Endurox.

  • who sells that?

  • i thot u take it before a workout as well

  • you know whats cool about the p90x formula? it has 36 grams of suger in 2 scoops. which is where you get your carbs. the other 3 grams of the carbs is dietary fibers. so if the thing you showed us has NO carbs then it must taste HORRIBLE!

  • @KazmanTheGuitarist

    Actually it tastes very good.

  • @LilM0 yeahh it's funny but true; im watchinq it riqht now on that show "the Dr's"

    on channel 2

  • You need CARBS after a workout dumb fuck. Carbs and protein are essential to muscle recovery, why do u think they have that many carbs in the p90x recovery drink. Learn your stuff dude before you try and give advice about nutrition.

  • @holimanjl That's not very nice. Why don't you evaluate what you hate about yourself instead of taking it out on others. AbetterMeP90X- Good for you for trying to help others. You have a very professional on screen presence. You could go into broadcasting if you wanted to.

  • this dood doesnt look like he has tried p90x go lose some weight

  • You also have to be careful when using stevia....some of them have maltodextrin in it.

  • this shit is so much i just use a protein shake mix that i found at wal mart for 20 bucks

  • @hopygopy33 Lmfao... me too

  • Zero carbs? That can mean only one thing: It's loaded with either Aspartame or Sucralose. Many people are wising up to these two synthetics. They're horrible tasting chemicals & I'd take Stevia over these any day of the week. Aren't carbs a post workout requisite anyway?

  • Isopure is NOT comparable to the P90x recovery drink. The main thing is that it has NO carbs and therefore can't be used as recovery!

  • You can just make your own recovery drink for a lot cheaper than p90x or Isopure... just buy some glutamine and creatine powder, make sure the ration is 3parts glutamine to 1 part creatine.

  • isopure is expensive as shit

  • holy shit that guy is ripped

  • Sorry but not even close to what a recovery drink is and the benefits of one. You should probably watch the Mark Sisson (creator) video on Beachbody for an explanation

  • U need carbs after the a workout for glycogen resynthesis.

  • the recovery drink has creatine in it, this doesn't

  • what about eating a natural fruit yogurt? good amount of protein and also complex carbs..??

  • @axentric also low in fat.

  • Very informative video! Thanks man, keep up the good work.

  • Really well spoken and well reviewed! Nice one! Thanks!

  • it has been rumored chocolate milk is good for recovery...but research hasn't really shown that helps it actuallity. the best thing to do is to look for peer reviewed articles on the subject....

  • I read an article in Men's Health saying that a 1% fat Chocolate milk drink could be the best recovery drink, if so you guys know a brand or something that I could look for?

And what is the difference between chocolate milk and the p90x recovery formula?

  • @andrew4773 I looked up the nutritional value of chocalte milk.. It could be a cheap alternative. 26g carb to 8g protein.. That's about 3:1 ratio. Pop in a multivitam and you're good to go!

  • I use 1/2 scoop choc. whey protein (~15 g), 60ml O.J. concentrate, and 1 scoop creatine (5g). YUMMY!!

Note: O.J. conc (or any fruit juice) has about the same natural sugars contained in the P90X recovery formula.

  • i have tapout recover post workout...does anyone know if thats good?

  • You need the carbs to replenish your glycogen stores after a weight training workout.

  • true...alot of people don't realize that you use glycogen as fuel source for your muscles!

  • The problem with what your saying is that the carbs are one of the main points of the recovery drink because it contains creatine, which is best absorbed when consumed with sugars. But the double protein of the drink you are suggesting is definitely an advantage.

  • is the recovery formula nasty or something?

  • I lean more toward the idea that "true" nutrition is the key. I have been doing p90x for 4 weeks now and feel great, however I eat a whole food diet full of veggies, nuts, and fresh bread (made from the whole wheat berry). I've found that the job of any supplement is to sell more supplement, not to help us achieve our goals. Maybe that sounds a little sinical, but think about it. If GNC helps you reach your goal, there's no more need for their store.

  • @MrMistama Natural is always key... However, 90% of us have busy lives and can't afford the time to prepare a well balanced meal. It does take a lot of time! Suppliments are quick and easy.. just add some water and drink. If you have time, go natural!

  • do i really need the p90x recovery drink, i really dont feel like going broke over this drink

  • Get some skim or 1% milk and ovaltine (yes, ovaltine adds the carbs, taste, and has extra minerals/vitamins over regular chocolate milk)

The precise 4:1 ratio is arbitrary, you'll be close enough with the ovaltine milk.

Trust me, it's not worth more than 5x as much per glass just for a few extra vitamins and some creatine.

Also consider a protein bar before a muscle workout. Much cheaper :D Similarly effective :D

  • @iSapan23 eat a lot of meat and complex carbs throughout your day and drink carbs right after you workout. That's pretty much it, or go buy the recovery supplies when they're on sale.

  • Comment removed

  • @iSapan23 u dont need it, but it definatley helps and can make all the difference

  • @iSapan23 You do need it!

  • if u take supplements like the p90x formula or isopure or whatever if u stop taking it will their be consequences because u stopped intakeing all those extra vitamins, carbs, and proteins?

  • dude carbs are good for you, if you dont have any carbs youre going to be dead tired all the time. You're not going to "recover" without any carbs in the shake.

  • It's a substitute guy's.......every one has there own thing....

  • i read that carbs are actually good to have in a recovery drink. i dunno.

  • @uncoverbrother The average person wanting to gain size and workout in a gym for an hour will only need another tea spoon of protein to repair the damage you have done. If you're American then the odds are you already have too much protein in your diet. A recovery drink is purely to replenish the glycogen you have lost. Which is why the recovery drinks have monosacharides (Fructose).

FYI, the added protein that doesn't get used will be turned into fat.

  • I agree with what a lot of people say. This is NOT what you should be using after a workout. Your body is screaming for nutrients, and you NEED to give it the 4:1 carb-protein ratio you need.

As well, liquid forms of vitamins will be absorbed faster then pill form. Especially since you're drinking the recovery drink after a hard workout (usually in the morning), and that pops iit right into your blood stream.

  • I just checked Isopure at GNC's website and most are either low card or zero card. I thought the point of the P90X recovery drink was to HAVE carbs (4:1 carb:ratio). Am I missing something here?

  • Accelerade at GNC...works like a charm!

  • i just eat a banana and a protein shake

  • its called chocolate milk guys

  • You can do a homemade mix using 100% whey protein isolate with around 60-90g of dextrose, which you can buy at a home brewing store for $5 for 5 lbs.

I use Synthex Nectar, which only has protein(high quality too) and no carbs. Then I mix in 68g of dextrose for the insulin spike.

A lot cheaper overall then buying one of those endurance/recovery mixes at GNC or Vitamin Shoppe.

  • after the workout is when you actually NEED THE CARBS so doesnt matter who you buy it from just do a 4 : 1 ratio protein to carb for recovery and bedtime try cassein protein vs whey .

  • No offense. What you say contradicts what Tony preaches... and that this is suppose to be a RECOVERY drink... not a protein drink ... you need the carbs for fast absorptions and vitamins also for FAST RECOVERY...

  • Actually you WANT simple carbs after a workout because they replace muscle glycogen stores. Otherwise your body will break down muscle to get what it needs. However if you are already using this stuff you can just supplement with gummi bears(not kidding... google it, lol)

  • Hertic! Repent to Tony Horton! Buy his stuff because it looks better on the shelves. Just kidding I go to GNC, too. Don't tell Tony though. You know what happened to the last guy...

  • Hey, bring me up to speed if you will...what happened to the last guy?

  • Well, let's just say he was made a spectacle by having to do Mary Kathern's in his skivies in front of a crowd at a Beach Body event. TONS of people!

  • i'm on my 3rd day of p90x. should i've been taking a whey protein shake after each workout. so when should i take my recovery drink?

  • Good stuff, thanks for the vid.

  • 2:10?

    Was there a reason?

  • Hey, sorry if this turns into a double post. but my last one didn't seem to go through.

Try looking into Chocolate Milk as your alternative recovery drink. There are scientifical studies in that seem to indicate that the macronutrient ratio of good ol' chockie-moo-moo is perfect for post workout recovery *AND* only costs about 1/3 the price of the powdered recovery drinks.

Just google for "Chocolate Milk Recovery" and you'll find plenty of info on it.

  • thanks for the great help and advice!

  • The carbs are actually added to to maximize absorption rate, by taking something that has 50g of protein and almost no carbs you may miss the one hour mark. If you really needed the recovery drink it should only take about an hour to absorb the recovery drink and the sugars in the drink wont be in your system when you go to sleep because your body used them already.

  • double the amount of protein doesn't mean you're going to gain twice as much/fast. protein and carb intake is different for everyone and depends on their weight, height, metabolism and goals. if your body can only take in 20 grams of protein and you ingest 50, the remaining 30 will ultimately end up in the toilet. ie - a waste of protein/carbs ...people need to know their body before they start putting stuff in them. that's my 2 cents

  • try the Optimeal mad by Jarrow

great either recovery drink or meal replacer and only $15

  • You should try 100% whey protein for your protein and chocolate milk for your recovery drink. Works wonders.

  • so what happened? Whats the update on your P90x?

  • I notice alot of you guys saying that you should mix your creatine with orange juice, isn't that useless? Doesnt the acid from the orange juice make the creatine useless, thats why you should mix it with grape juice or an insulin mimicker like dextrose? I'm not an expert I'm just saying things I've learned from other people/read online.

  • thank you.

  • Hey want to save money and get the same results just use Chocolate milk. Does the same thing at only $3.00 or less a gallon.

  • Chocolate milk has loads of refined sugars. No bueno.

  • not post workout... refined sugars hit your system quick. Thats what you want post workout. Any other time its a no go but after a workout sugar is actually a decent fast acting carbohydrate.

  • Simple carbs in the form of sugar are fine immediately after a workout -- but they should come from fruit. Refined/added sugars on the other hand, aren't the best choice. The best post workout drink is a quality whey protein mixed with fresh fruit (banana, blueberries).

  • To the guy that skips yoga. I think yoga is one of the hardest work outs. As far as chocolate milk that sounds good I might try that.

  • Thanks for the informative video. Wonder if the 5 pound whey protein from costco is same as recovery drink. I assume that the recovery drink is some kind of whey protein supplement?

  • i definitely got some kind recovery drink called myoplex that came conveniently in 11oz bottles

  • yea but those are expensive as hell

  • best recov has protein glutamine 10-15% creatine

  • only has 10g of protein but has a good mix of carbs and a little creatine.

  • thanks for the tip....

  • just drink 1% chocolate milk make sure its 1% it has the perfect ratio of carbohydrates and proteins for a recovery drink

  • a good recovery drink actually isnt even a drink! eat half of a banana or a whole banana if you're big enough, and drink a protein shake after your workout. banana has a lot of vitamins and nutrients and sugars to help your blood sugar levels return to normal

  • green tea is also good for recovery just dont add un-holy amounts of sugar

  • This video is fucking stupid. The recovery drink is SUPPOSED to have carbs. Otherwise you're just drinking protein. Your body needs the carbs for recovery, ad it should be a 4:1 ratio. This guy has no idea what he;s talking about, and anyone who gave him 5 stars is clueless.

If you want a good recovery drink alternative, drink lowfat chocolate milk, which has the same ration.

  • fats/proteins/carbs/ are all forms of energy for the body!!!!!

  • i take eas vanilla protein after my p90x but i dont put creatine in it i might try it

  • a post workout drink is suppose to have carbs. the ratio is 4:1 carbs to protein. That is what helps your body recover.

I like xxMcQuackxx's recommendations for a post workout drink. it covers it all.

  • He's only siting the difference and why it might make a difference if you take it before bed at night.

  • Yeah the creatine content is a bit low. I was thinking of a cheaper alternative to the P90x drink - even though it tastes great, $50 is a bit steep for me. I am going to try orange juice mixed with creatine and a scoop of vanilla whey protein powder and see if that works.

  • the p90x recovery drink has creatine monohydrate as well, so thats pretty big
