I found Fred's grave and got Bonnie Raitt involved to re-stone it with the right dates and even the right spelling. I played fred's song's to Fred's family to their delight and mine. I've also played these song's with Johnny Woods on Beale st. Fred is not the voice here!!
Whether or not it's McDowell or some other member of the congregation singing the male vocal, it is definitely from the album @not2sport referenced--you can give it a listen on the Arhoolie site, & so that rules out Blind Willie Johnson for sure. Arhoolie lists the album credits as follows: Fred McDowell - guitar and vocals.
On Church Songs: Annie Mae McDowell is featured along with a few members of the congregation.
in the case of his spirituals with Annie Mae.." fred's guitar is used antiphonally in support of his vocal interpolations and in some cases in place of them" Peter J. Welding........from My home is in the Delta..blues and spirituals by Fred and Annie Mae McDowell..........his vocals sound more guttoral....not typical...good discussion though
sure that is rev gary d? sounds more like blind willie johnson and he did a fair few tunes with a female in accompaniment... hard one to call, perhaps time to google the lyrics.
That IS NOT fred mcdowell singing, trust me. I am a mississippi fred mcdowell addict, And i will put my guitar on the line that the guy singing AINT fred. It is fred playing you can hear his "style" in every finger pick, but thats someone else singing.
If blindboyblue said it too as well as me take it as truth.
I agree. It's Fred playing and Annie singing for sure but I doubt the second voice is Fred. More likely it's someone from the "Hunter's Chapel Singers" who also feature elsewhere on this album.
Gotta say though, this really is a top album and a good song to post from it.
hmmm....serial artists

You're all wrong. It's Justin Timberlake singing with Britney Spears in 1933.
