Thought I'd give you a bit more info. The wheels were straight out of the packet, I didn't think to wash them, would they have had mold release agents on them that would stop the pigment penetrating? I had them in the pot for over 20 mins on low heat as I was afraid if I turned the heat up it would foam up again. Would lightly sanding them break up the surface and aid penetration?
@TrickyFingersNZ Video states that it will not work on all (I believe an example of not working is shown) on plastics that are coated. If you did the dye process right then its possible that there is a coating and will not dye.
Hi Squirrel, today I bought some black fabric dye (Dylon brand, only one I could find, we dont have Rit in New Zealand). I boiled the water in the pot, turned it down then added the dye (which is powder by the way). After about 10 seconds it started to foam right up and came up over the sides of the pot, aaaaaaargg!!! Cleaned up, but then the wheels never went black, not even close. Any idea where I went wrong? Did the foaming up make all the pigment weak? Wheels are Hong Nor. Thanks in advance!
In five years of being on youtube, and two accounts, i have never subscribed to anyone. I just subscribed to you lmao, your vids are so damn helpful and interesting
yea cuz i see in ur video the water is not really boing when u put the rims in and i was wondering what temp they should be at and i bought the liquid rit so does that make a difference to the process
How about dying a fuel tank? Is it safe, or the dye will come off as soon as it's in contact with nitro fuel? Are fuel tank dyeble at all - I mean will their color change or they have the coating that prevents it?
Well....I understand that. I was wondering about a larger individual piece like a whole hardbody. Only thing I would be worried about on the body dyeing is the cab pillars or other thin parts of the body warping from the heat.
OMG! I used to do this 20+ years ago! I dyed all the plastic parts of my (now vintage) RC10 red. It worked really well. Great vid, 5/5. Some folks should perhaps wear latex or rubber gloves if they have sensitive skin. But all modellers should have spots of paint and or dye on their hands. So folks know you actually do what you say you do! ! ;-) I don't really mean that, but I always seemed to have paint on me when i was fully into it! .
No worries and thanks. I think that all politicians suck. Ive seen too many people vote party lines without even thinking about the issues to say that I am one or the other. No worries :)
yo im getting the CEN mg16 MT and i really don't like the white wheels on it.I was wondering would i have to take the tire off the rim. i know it would float but i can weight it down. since ht rubber is all ready black why would i need to take it off or can i keep it on?
by the way i subbed and i like ur vids helping me fix my nitro atm :)
What about plastics that will be handled frequently...like the remote control. Will the dye bleed off as it reacts with sweat? Or does it retain the dye like it would on clothes.
If you scratched it then it might eventually go deep enough to turn the stock color. But, the dye pregnates the plastic pretty deep. A normal scratch would not show.
Rims are pretty thin. It will not show on that. If you have a pretty thick plastic piece then there would eventually be a spot that you can carve into to show the stock color. And the longer it is in the more it will penetrate.
hey thats kool we just dyed some white wheels today with dye salt an water turned out pretty good i guess not as good as your"s but better than white hey btw thanks for the idea it was kool gonna hafta dye some more wheels now lol..also i broke my jato 3.3 in by you"re vid"s helped out to thanx alot will watch more of ur vid"s when you post them..

brendin55 2 years ago
Ever tried this on a bit larger scale like say a 1:10 Tamiya hardbody. Something like the Pajero or Tundra bodies?
offroader5 2 years ago
the parts used are for predominantly 1/8th scale.
Squirrelod 2 years ago
Well....I understand that. I was wondering about a larger individual piece like a whole hardbody. Only thing I would be worried about on the body dyeing is the cab pillars or other thin parts of the body warping from the heat.
offroader5 2 years ago
If it is plastic then you can definitely give it a shot. If it is a lexan body then more than likely not.
Ive done whole chassis and everything else. It just needs to be a color that you can dye to (ie, the dye should be something darker) and plastic.
