  • Im totally unfamilier with scales at all. I understand that scales are groups of certains notes, but to play a scale you need to play chord. So, only way to play C major scale is to strum C chord beforehand?

  • question?...lets say a song is in the key of am can i play an am pentatonics ,melodic, harmonic etc. any of them, just as long as its in that key for a song thats in the key am..

  • its very very rare to find a music teacher that can actually convey their material effectively.

Most THINK their student understands more than the student actually does, and this problem seems localized to music in my experience.

Unfortunately this guy isn't good at all. Sorry m8

  • i agree with wikipeoples =/

  • due music teachers understand that most students have no idea what their explaining.

  • are all music teachers crap?

  • this is great, it isn't mindless scale rehearsal - it's actual understanding! Thanks a lot!

  • ok, i made a stupid comment i finally understood what you are saying on the video, lol. I didnt notice you at first, saying "but start with A", so after a few replays of the video i finally figured it out. I guess having a drink while learning theories is bad, but im pretty sure im right with the "3 fret rule" :)

  • im a bit confused how you explained about the A minor pentatonic dropping 3 frets becoming a F major pentatonic, the relative minor stuff you are explaining. Afaik, if you drop 3 frets (using the "3 fret rule")from, for ex. A major that would be F# minor pentatonic and if you want a to get the relative major of a minor scale, you should go up 3 frets.

  • My comment was for discoguy, I replied to him, but youtube posted it up top

  • great lesson....thanks

  • This guy charges money for this? I understand theory and scale construction and I can't follow what he's talking about. A beginner wouldn't be able to make heads or tails out of this. Absolutely terrible, confusing explanation and not even correct on certain points - "there's no E#, there's no Fb". Like hell there isn't. Ever heard of enharmonics? And what's with the constant whine in the background? Feedback? Camera noise? Who wants to put up with that?

  • these videos were made for a college project 5 years ago, and were put on youtube a few years after for a bit of fun, all for free. i did state that you can write the note E as F flat, hence your enharmonics. this was meant to be for intermediate people and not beginners anyway. why dont you try filming your own videos to help others? have fun

  • You doubled back and sort of half-explained alternate note names but in a very disorganized way that contradicts your previous - and incorrect in the context you presented them - statements. Note the guy's "wtf is a scale?" comment after watching. "Understanding scales" isn't an intermediate topic. But whoever the target audience is, it's not explained clearly. I believe you mentioned a DVD so I assumed you were selling this. I commend your donation with intent to assist others but...

  • yeah its really hard to present and remember everything all in one take and get it across clearly without an autocue. there are little mistakes like calling an f sharp a g flat in an A major context etc. some people find these vids usefull, some people rip the sh*t. either way i made them 5 years ago, so it doesnt botherme. Thereare obviously rules to music, but most guitarists ignore them or break them, check out marty friedman, he makes up his own scales! like i said why dont you give it a go?

  • I dont understand a shit wtf is a scale all i see is ppl telling you how to play like a B but wtf am i supposed to do with it

  • how very narrow minded you are

  • "wtf is a scale" What he's avoided explaining is that a scale is a set pattern of (usually) half and whole steps starting from any note that give it the unique sound of a type of scale major, minor etc. Half step=two adjacent frets (or adjacent keys on a piano) whole step=skipping a fret in between. Key center is the note you base your scale on. Ex. key of C major=melody based on a major scale starting on C. Ex. Where W-whole H-half W W H W W W H=major scale Ex's Cmaj CDEFGABC Fmaj FGABbCDEF

  • I.e. no matter what note you start on, if you play the W W H W W W H major scale pattern you'll end up playing a major scale.

  • please less talking and show the scales and tips

  • good man. Most of these other 'teachers' don't seem bothered about people actually learning what the notes are! Or explaining abpout the b sharp/e sharp thing. Nice work!

  • done well! your vids are great. keep it up, dude...

  • all this stuff about how its so important to know the notes in scales is true, but you seem to think ther is a Gb in A major, mystery!! if it was an honest mistake then you shud av done it agen coz its for a tutor vid that ppl will watch n try n learn from.

  • yes there is a Gb in A major. learn your scales.

  • Per yongling "yes there is a Gb in A major. learn your scales." I'm afraid you're the one that needs to brush up pal. There are 3 sharps in A major so there's an F# which is the enharmonic to Gb, but it's incorrect to call it Gb in the context of the key of A major.

  • You're a douchebag. If you have something of value to offer then post some videos. If not then shut the fuck up.

  • So apparently you don't find posting accurate information to correct that which has been inaccurately stated as valuable. I'd say you're the one who walks about filled with a vinegar solution.

  • Haha! LTD guitar and Fender amp XD

  • ROFL

  • great video, scales still confuse the hell out of me start music lessons next week

  • he's good at explaining it but the camera should be focused on his left hand

  • check out my vids!!! some really good tips!!!

  • where can i get the dvd of all of these vids...tired of waiting for them to load with my dial up connection

  • Thank you so much for this video. I'm teaching myself and I was having trouble understanding placing scales across the fret board. Big help.

  • oh my god ya accent:D:D

  • He doesnt have an accent thats how english is supposed to be spoken :P

  • im sooo lost.... seriously...

  • it might be a better starting point for you, if you're having trouble following the instructions, to get a visual guide to the way the notes are laid out first and familiarize yourself with that. and then watch the video a few times after that.

  • Yea it really sucks when your starting out on musical theory. Takes probably a couple of months to understand the basics of scales. If you take any musical lessons just ask your teacher about it. And if he doesn't know musical theory.... You need a new teacher...

  • These videos really help me a lot.Thank you so much.

  • i really want to learn the scales..but that just seems way too confusin for me... but i gotta hand it to ya... thats the best explanation ive seen yet... even tho i dint understand any of it lol

  • i'm having difficulty with the A natural minor scale, because i've never really learned the notes so i have difficulty.

does it follow the same pattern as A major?

  • C Major

  • thanks, im just starting out and this was a big help.
