  • I've been poking around YouTube looking at various performances of the Maple Leaf Rag, and this has been the best one I've found so far. Everyone else tries to play it way, way too fast, but this guy is playing it at the right speed.

Okay, there are lots and lots of mistakes, but this kid is playing it at the right speed. Which is more than I can say for the other lightning-piano performances on YouTube.

  • @FBfan477 do you post your stuff? you should!!

  • No Keyes are ever pushed down he's faking you little fakeass

  • @bgboy1998 are you kidding? haven't you seen videos get out of sync? It starts out right, then slowly gets out of sync. I didnt' even post his last name.. its not like I'm trying to get him known for this video or something. sheesh.

  • that has so many amazing octaves! with those little hands! this is AMAZING! He is going to be AMAZING!

  • This is so fake!!!! His hands didn't even move at the end. There is no way he was playing that. Absolutely impossible. His hands were not moving in time to the music-he was way too slow!

  • I SOOOOO WANNA BE ABLE TO DO THAT!!! IM SO JEALOUS!!!!!

  • im 11 and im learning piano for a few months i SOOOOOOOO wanna be able to do that!!!!

  • He's too young for Maple leaf Rag ! It's so unacomplished

  • I played it at 12... but i didn't have the book untill then.

  • its real i can tell i play ragtime too

  • very nice mate - i can relate - i was 8-9 when i started playing as well - - - try and get hold of some winifred atwell music - i used to play the cd(record) and play along with it - thats how i learnt her style - - - - always remember - in this world you can be anything you want to be - but listening and playing along with the old school stars are what will make you shine - - - keep up the good work mate

  • i'l eat my hat if he can play death waltz without missing a single note

  • Good job!! Keep up the good work, Andrew!!

  • the new MOZART!! iI TELL YOU THE NEW MOZART!

  • lol since when do people play ragtime at church? I guess it depends on the church.

  • could use a little more practice

  • Holy heck. This kid is amazing! Way better than me on all scales. Keep teaching him, I'd love to see new videos of this prodigy playing! "D

  • i couldnt play that well until i was 30 :) (i started when i was 12)

  • @cameraman4brainiac "i started when i was 12" made my day xD +1

  • Fantastic! To think his little nine year old hands are reaching all those chords! If that was 2007 I'd love to hear him now :)

  • @goldenlunafish Check out my other videos for his more recent pieces

  • @Cassign What age did he start playing?

  • @Chaoticbravo About age 6. He had a few lessons before that and I figured out he wasn't learning to read music, he was playing by ear. Even now, his teacher gives him things that are really difficult or you can't find on youtube so that he won't just learn by ear but has to read the music. She also works on sight reading.

  • @Cassign Wow. I'm impressed. I started a year younger and wasn't playing that well until age 12. Here's a little pointer that really helped me out: The best way to learn how to read music is to write music.

  • Fake

you cant see his hands move at the end

  • @Madogbray ha ha. That is just windows movie maker getting out of sync. Why would I bother to post a fake video? I didn't even brag about his name? You are silly.

  • @Madogbray

    ITS CALLED PEDAL!!

  • @Madogbray If you were half as smart as you pretend... you'd notice it's out of sync... of course i realise you can't play at all... does it feel nice to go trying to ruin the reputation of people more talented than you?

Hay cada boludo dando vueltas en youtube... mamita!

  • @Madogbray If you didnt notice, the sound on the camera is a bit slower. Better watch more before you comment.

  • @ebayboy1234 It's never too late! Start today!

  • I can draw! But my simple shaded bowl of fruit will never equal this. Oh how I wish I could play the piano.

  • OK, on the topic of memorization, aty what point is it healthy for the piano student to play a piece without looking at the music. I am a 1st year piano student and if I do this I've found I will become lazy and lose my note-reading skills. Any piano teachers out there? What say ye?

  • @TubeSteak007 he learns with the music, but will never continue to look at it once playing it through because he can hear it. His teacher never plays anything through for him because he will play it by ear instead of reading the music, but once played, its in there and that's that. Playing new music all the time is the only way to keep his note-reading skills up. You guys should check out his other pieces though. he is almost 14 now.

  • @TubeSteak007 I am not a paino teacher, but I am self-taught and have taught others informally (so take my advice with a grain of salt... this is just how it works for me). No time is too soon to start memorizing music. However, it is very important that you keep up your sight reading skills. What I do is just sightread through a ton of random piano music. After only about a year of doing this, I got to where I could see a note on the page and my fingers would naturally go to the right key.

  • i'm about 15 years older than this kid and he plays this better than me so i'm not going to be bitter and give this kid a thumbs down, he kicked ass...scott joplin would be proud.

  • i am astonished of how well he plays

  • "Earl... Get my shotgun... We shall go find these "dislikers" and kill them (Suicide) DAMMIT EARL!" I cant even play this song that well Bill!

  • @scottishdrunk097 hey! dont take my name there! :P

  • @mypredat0r it's very mean of you to say that... he went through the song well enough, and I liked it.

  • Aw, how cool! I'm learning this song too right now. Almost to the end. I like his steady tempo, most everyone who knows this song is tempted to just speed through to the end.

  • i was a child prodigy till i turned 10

  • wow. how can people dislike this. 37 people couldnt do this when they were 9.

  • i wish i were a child prodigy :/

  • well its quite a bad version . its riduculas tht a 9 year old should try to play tht because its clear he cant stretch to alot of the chords.

  • @taekwondoina10 Well three years is a pretty big difference. Pretentious twat.

  • @taekwondoina10 bist ja nur eifersüchtig -.-

  • ...What have I done with my life?

  • i am his age and i can play that to but he is VERY VERY GOOD!!!!!!

  • he is amazing, no doubt about it. The Maple Leaf Rag, and a nine year old making it look so easy! I want to see this kid play another Joplin piece.

  • You go Andrew!!!! Nice job! Don't ever stop. You're going to be a star some day!

  • Meh

  • talented though he may be, I'd advise you not to call him "prodigious", since it might encourage his vanity more than his love for music :)

It's good to sound humble as a parent. Prodigious is not a formal title to choose over well-practiced. :D it is merely subjective, what he is. To me, a third person, he's a talented young to musician who needs to be encouraged :D Otherwise he'll learn to compete over stereotypes than to enjoy the music :) Please do not get me wrong!Keep practicing :)

  • @FliegendeHollaender ..forget that...this kid is prodigeous...you realize how many adult pianists who are very good wouldn't even ATTEMPT this tune? He makes mistakes & is a little halting a some points but I'm impressed that he could even play it at all at the age he was then. I have a son who is a prodigy (and that's the only way you can describe it) on drums. Could outplay most adults when he was just 10. Keep them humble by letting them stay and enjoy being kids

  • Bravo! He is awesome :~)

  • That's damn impressive, sounds like the proper version too. I recall playing an adaptation when I was younger. You're awesome, can't wait to see you in years to come.

  • Very, very impressive!

  • Stretch those little hands man!

  • i love it good job

  • sinceri complimenti!

  • yeah lil man, Do it!!!!!!!!!!!

  • It is impressive .... For a 9 year old. But everyone you do realize it does not to be mean but it sounds like crap. But it is great for a 9 yer old and he will probably be very good at piano if he keeps it up

  • @temporyacc But...it IS mean for you to say that it sounds like crap! My God, what if he reads your comment? Kids are sensitive, and unless you are that child's parent or music teacher, you should keep your critiques to yourself.

  • @whatanightmare1 no but the camera makes it sound like crap :o not that he doesn't play good ! i'm really amazed BTW !

  • wow....i feel like a beginner compared to him playing the full song like that! :D that was awesomeQ

  • Amazing.

  • great! keep on!:)

  • amazing!!!!!!! I wish my 9 year old brother was this dedicated to piano :)

    I'm learning this piece and I'm 15!

  • Exellent. This kid actually has the tempo correct (compared to even the composers with videos on youtube). 5-stars!

  • Is he prodigious or simply well practiced?

  • @Wubbles9000 prodigious, but he loves to practice. He memorizes everything he plays.

  • @Cassign the more you practice the more you know it off by heart and dont need the music....... i should know :)

  • @MyPredat0r I would agree except he doesn't use them music much when practicing. It is not that he practiced til he knew it. He can listen to the music at the end of a movie and go over to the piano and play it. Wish I had his gift.

  • @Cassign How long has he been playing?

  • @linkdeas3 since he was 4. I didn't even plan to give him lessons, but after a couple of weeks of his older brother getting lessons, he kept copying what his brother had learned, we gave in :)

  • @Cassign well keep up the lessons, he's got great ambition and the skill to back it up!

  • wow! i'm only 15 and i'm still learning this!!! the kid is great!!! and you say that this is the real piece? even i'm only playing the easier version......

  • He is great! when can we have an update and see how he is doing?

  • on itunes at one point there was an organ showcase recording of the entertainer. it was awesome

  • awesome! fantastic! just gotta break the habit of his shoulders haunched

  • Is it wrong to feel madly jealous that I can't play like that? This is one talented guy, I hope he does something with it

  • make him play this again at his age now!! =)) hes amazing! u know what im already 15 and ive been learning the same piece for 2 years up to now cuz im too lazy to finish it!! my god i wish i had his wonderful talent :)

  • wow that was super amazin

a few flaws but watever dude that way better than me

  • BRAVOOO!it's not too much to say genius!

  • yeah i h8 myself. im 14 nd i have the tiniest freakin hands. i began 2 play this but the octaves were difficult. i had 2 move 2 joplins pieces that didnt have that much octaves. i couldnt even play the entertainer because of the octaves with thirds:(. so now i am playing the cascades by joplin. wat a sad world.

  • Good onya mate! Bravo!

  • wow when you will be big you are the 2nd scott joplin ^_^ hehe my grand father and scott joplin are friends hehe then scott joplin died a long time ago

  • Its really good but i dont think age comes into it when my piano teacher moans at me i could jst say im 12 but i dont i get treated like an adult nd idont care it has made me a better player and i wish i could play a s good as him i cant play this but i can play the entertainer and other Scott Joplin pieces

  • wow .. amazing!!!!!!

  • gosh this kid is gonna be a heartbreaker... haha what a cutie (: and he has such amazing talent!!!! unbelievable. one of my face piano pieces... good luck to him in all. (:

  • Whoa man that's great! Did you have to take off the top of the octaves? I have small hands, and I imagine he does too.

  • @Maccat18 he just barely got the octaves at this age. He hits them easily now at age 12.

  • @Cassign Glad he's still at it.

  • Nicely done. Just keep him in that church!

  • amazing!!! this is the best ive seen in a 9 year old! im showing this to my piano teacher!!!

  • BRAVO! Little genius!

  • wow, i feel so unaccomplished

  • @rakshi7259 everything is a process.

  • @rakshi7259 besides, talent is never natural! if there is something you enjoy, give it a go!

  • On dirait pas mais le morceau est vraiment easy j'ai que 12 ans et je le fais perfect ^^

  • @AlphaMakeMe bon pour vous. J'espère qui est un compliment

  • That's awesome! Only 9?! How does he manage to stretch the octave used so many times? That is pretty impressive! Keep up the good work :)

  • @Outofpetrol I could.

  • Is this the real or a easier version? when I was 10 or 9 I played a easier version of maple rag.

  • @Acep33 this is the real one. There are easier ones, yes.

  • no music! he's like me~ d'aww thats so cute!

  • lucky kid to be able to stretch octaves at such a young age!

  • holy smokes.

  • how does it sound like? is a difficult piece

  • This is so amazing to see such a good piano player at such a young age!

  • This is so amazing to see such a good piano player at such a young age!

  • I play ragtime too

  • dude, thats insane!

  • cute. very cute!(: and good ofcourse lol'

  • this is a hard song; especially the left hand; bravo for stretching yourself

  • I've been looking all over sheet music websites JUST for that song!! Did he play by ear? or does he remember it off sheet music? if so, PLAESE TELL ME THE SITE!!!!!

P.S. That's so cool!!!!! INFINITY IS WHAT I RATE IT!!!

  • @saxophones1397 we purchased the book "Scott Joplin, King of Ragtime" it had the difficult one in it. but we didn't buy it not online. He plays by ear most of the time, He reads the music once or twice and then never again.

  • I'm amazed that your hands are big enough! I'm 20, leaned to play that song when I was about 14 or so, and I still don't have large enough hands to reach all the notes!

  • Its seems like a fake. That is wonderful!

  • WOW!!!! AMAZING JOB!!!

  • O SNAP!

    Go little dude!

  • talent pure talent

  • bravo veramente!!

  • Wow he should be in a talent show and get at LEAST 2nd place with thet m,uch skill.

  • lol that makes me feel like playing 24hours a day of paino

  • nice kid, but u should relax yourself. dont be so stiff. keep up the work :)

  • Wow, That is truly incredible. For a 9 year old, like holy smokes bud. Great job.

  • man i call that talent

  • Great job! Sounds like a really tough piece to play. Maybe it's just me, but you look alittle tense.

  • im 12 years old and what is this song

  • Maple Leaf Rag - by Scott Joplin

  • You can see him shift himself up and down the stool :P

  • exellent job really enjoyed it. keep up the good work. love to hear yopu play more scot joplin davefrog100

  • Absolutely ridiculous!!!!!!! Andrew buddy keep doin what you're doing- to play this piece is unbelievable at your age you're truly amazing. Please pal don't give up the piano it would be a real waste. Can you imagine of what you can do in like 4-5 years!!!!???? Fantastic effort mate A+++++!

  • ok hes doing good he just got to literally put the song together and speed up

  • WOW i wish my 9 year old brother was as talented as you, I can play the whole song but he can't even play a C chord

  • OMG

NO WAY, im 14, and i can only just play the beggining to that.

    Well done kid, dam impressive

  • naww how much practice would that take!?!?!

  • not bad for a 9year old

  • OMG i have a video of my friend, ANDREW playing the exact same song!!!! what a coincidence!!!

  • wow! fantastic! this kid is Scott Joplin 2

  • well done kid. im 24 and just starting to learn piano cos i allready play guitar and drums and have really gotten into ragtime and wish i was this good at any instrument at the age of 9. keep it up.

  • fantastical job Andrew!!

best church music I've ever heard!

  • At least he's not watching telly, playing a bloody playstation or nintendo ds!!! good parents, good lad!!!!

  • Thats great - really good but the thing is I bet his parents spend loads of money on him (lessons, music etc). Nice Grand Piano thats been bought for him.

  • well, no. this is a church recital. He plays on a 40 year old upright at home.

  • Fair enough I take that back :P

  • The main giveaway being the cross behind the piano.

  • And the Flags in the background.. Not many people have those in their house

  • all the lessons in the world will not make a kid a pianist; that takes many hours of practice away from lessons!

  • @apsufan Yeah, and actually WATING to learn and play REALLY helps. It seems obvious but: if you enjoy it and want to do it you will definitely do allot better.

  • @apsufan

    Like everything else in life.

  • @apsufan word

  • AWESOME!!! but wat happened to the repeats? BUT STILL GOOD WITHOUT THEM!!!!

  • u dont do the repeats for exams... i assume thats why

  • Totally amazing! Andrew rocks!!

  • THIS KID IS AWESOME!

    Props!

  • I DON'T CARE HOW OLD HE IS! Just how good he plays this... noob
