I find it astonishing and am filled with anguish reading many of the comments. No one 'won' WWII. We as a species lost it, and the nationalistic comments below on 'who-won-what' fortify my and many historians (and Niall Ferguson's) belief that we may be doomed to repeat it.

German aims to seek a global empire created a chaotic European environment which gave rise to the USSR, the rise of fascism in Italy and Germany and the fall of European colonialism. Also, after the Second World War Europe was splintered into between Eurasian USSR and the North American USA. It ultimately destroyed Europe.

I think the real victor of the 20th Century was neither capitalism nor democracy, Islamic Fundamentalism, and certainly not fascism or communism, but nationalism. That ism proved to be far stronger than any other ideaology of the past century as provenm in Eastern Europe in the late 1980s and early 90s. More people are willing to fight and die for their country than for Communism or socialism or fascism.

@soya28 Completely correct statement! But the Russians were waiting with their advance westward until the other allies started their campaign in Normandy, a two front war Germany never could win. And during the war, Russia was heavely dependent on Allied (American) supplies, tanks planes, bombers and even food.

Just like the Brits and many other nations. The Russians did a tremendous job, but the Allies did so too. The Pacific war was not a walk in the park, neither was Normandy or the Ardennes.

England northwestern Germany,US southern and most of western Germany.The USSR conquered all of eastern Europe in 1945.They took advantage of their opportunity.Being invaded by the Nazis was the excuse the Soviets used to take over half of Europe by 1945.

@soya28 You're right and any historian would agree with you at least in regard to the European Theater. The Soviets bore the brunt of the fighting and turned the tide in Europe however it must always be remembered that Hitler was never able to concentrate all of his forces on the USSR because he had to tie them down to protect against the UK and USA. The USA won the war against the Japanese however and this was a very bloody conflict.

Americans walked through South East Asia, Italy, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Monaco, North Africa and Germany. Sure, the Russians did a great part in this war, but the Allies went through a lot of things too. Let's not forget them.

what made man act like martians? Here is an analogy for you; a couple adopts a kid, that they torment and abuse for most of that kid's life. Kid grows up, and he gets bigger. The world over, powerful people abused entire populations; modern weapons suddenly empowered abused people, who, finally, in the 20th century, and the means to fight back effectively. Also its not a war of empires, but cultural spheres; for it to be an empire, it needs to be legally called that.

I dont really see it that way, in the Soviet bloc Poles and Ukrainians butchered each other in the 2nd world war 2 people both abused by Tsarism and Communism. The real abuse was not done by ordinary people coming out of oppression but the "Parents" afraid to lose power Stalin and Hitler the Chauvanists equiped with socialist doctrine to gain power although many of the "Kids" took the wrong lessons like the Chinese or the Japanese who learned the doctrine of Living space or "com." control.

What Ferguson means is that ideologies frequently employ "the race card" in order to motivate their followers.
