This is the Operation Hardtack I "Umbrella" test, done by the United States of America on June 8 1958, not North Korea, to determine the destructive potential of underwater nuclear explosions. That's why the ship is there, to see how much damage it will suffer.

@shank894 15,000 warheads! Where did you get those figures? The only country in history that had that many nukes was the Soviet Union at the height of the cold war. As far as I've heard, they have less than 20 warheads and no ICBMs capable of reaching past Alaska. Also, if the CIA World Factbook's estimations are correct, even if North Korea spent all their money on their military it'd still be only 1/10 of America's military spending.

@IrradiatedPenguin Yeah, I have a book about the nuclear tests they did in the Atol islands and the ships that were used in those test were so badly irradiated/contaminated the the frustrated U.S. gov't. just scuttled them after months of decon attempts.

It's just water. The real blast from the explosion would not effect the people on the ship. Besides, the crew would be below deck. The ship was far enough away so only some displaced water would reach them. Rest assured, the ship is afloat and crew members are alive.
