I know him personally. Viva Cuba! as we call him. Trust me, he doesnt need money for booze. He earns more money, singing there, than many of you, people. He's a great musician and a poet though.
He probqbly saw that we were idiot American tourists and figured English would have a better chance of scoring him booze money. On the other hand, he was already singing this (in an endless loop) before we entered the underpass...
