I am a scientist, and I can confirm this is how almost all discoveries are made. You jump into a convertible and start yelling numbers into a walkie-talkie. It is fucking epic.

isnt this amazing: the movie is American, but it is not available to the Americans here for viewing, because the greedy movie studios wont let it get posted on Youtube without suing. BUT, it is available in every other language to every other people in the world on this very same Youtube.
On the Youtube, it is a serious disadvantage to be American or speak English. I wish I were a zulu, spoke spanish and worshiped the great PBUH!!!
@hotboyclarence >>The film IS made available,in America to Americans,as per it being here on You Tube.Because it is not in English,as per some legalities is unfortunate. So it's the greed game,of the DVD maker, and or who else ?Use the cc and subtitle it.Speaking just english is the disadvantage,NOT being American.I bought the DVD used in a pawn shop....$4.- And good luck with your wish to be Zulu.
@billy1212ist that is EXACTLY what I was saying. sooo, how did this make me look stupid to you, when you are saying the same thing as I did? isnt that a mark of stupidity not to be able to connect thoughts in your mind??
Messages from aliens as well as an elaborate schematic device to transport someone to the journey of the unknown--what a wonderful vision that we are NOT ALONE.
Great movie with Jodie Foster & the handsome McConaughey..Transport me from taxes, politics & stress anyday!!
I can relate to the scene where Jodie says...... ' I had no idea' ....... when i had my 'cosmic consciousness' realization... i didn't say a word... what can one say? To expand into every nook and cranny of Infinity in a nanosecond... to then realize who and what you are in the same instant... and then to return to this ponderous meat puppet called a 'body' on a dung heap called Earth is... well... anticlimactic. How to show others what one has seen? I have done my best... come and see.
So I take it you are an astral projector. Your not alone, there are many societies and authors who teach others how to do it at seminars and writing books about it. Research Robert, Michael Raduga and Robert Monroe just to name a few. Also look into telekinesis, one of many psychic abilities....
My favorite part is "Boss has a bogey".... Kills me every time. Worst part is when "the powers that be" discuss the length of static on the recorder at the end of the film.
When they discuss the length of static it indicates they are aware that she was telling the truth about her trip and that they are likely to continue but in secret. It completely changes the end of the film. This is a really intelligent film that gets us thinking about life.
@stillcannotfly ..and that comes right after James Woods' character tries his best to make Ellie look like a fool in front of the whole world. One day...One day....
why Vega...and will Shostak have the guts to share it with the world or will him and his cronies be taken outback for a little talk....catch my drift hunh...
I've always disagreed with 'Palmer's' (and many others) theses about loneliness. We THINK we are more lonely now-a-days because of technology, but that is just hubris.
We as a race have always felt this, it is a survival technique that ensures cooperation. It is, and has always been vital for us to feel alone, it is our 'teeth and claws'.
I feel we are less 'alone' than ever before in human history, and me sitting here typing this is just an example.
i agree something like the concept of Contact w/ the universe is totally appropriate for remakes in each generation that has significantly advanced technology, who know what ideas movie makers come up with that can be used by actual scientists who can then advance further, plus the concept is such a profound one, and this movie somewhat faulty in execution, it's a completely valid comment (sorry my bad punctuation)
There are a lot of advances in cinema since the filming of Contact. However, the way the story is written and the way the story is told (i.e. Directed) there isn't anything today that would make it better. So many people neglect to realize the point of the film and the usefulness of the Sci-fi genre. Its not about the aliens, its not about the different worlds, or the CGI this story like all good Sci-fi films are stories about ourselves (human nature).
I think this is a very intellegent film. It goes more for the realistic sci-fi approach.

The movie didn't follow the book in many ways. But it was ok . The remark Ellen made in the book when she was certain the signal wasn't local :
"In her mind she thought she could hear one joyous shout amidst a clamor of other voices."

Such a great movie. I love it because it wasn't about aliens, it was about our reaction (as a people) to the idea that aliens could exist.

I think they borrowed the track of the alien signal from the probe sent in search of whales in Star Trek 4.

@dgahacker Your comment is spot-on. I suggest a remake would very likely focus on the visual elements at the expense of the story.
