I definitely agree with these viewpoints, especially the one about SEO not being something that most designers tend to integrate into a site. I also would suggest that web designs should have the site owner in mind, especially for small business web sites... If you can't edit your site once it's done then it's not really useful.

I agree with just about everything he's saying! I mean I'm a web designer, but I'm definitely not a programmer, yet I do know a reasonable amount about coding. I'm not hot on SEO, yet I do have a couple of websites at number 2 on google for their keywords, but it takes a lot of trial and error to get it right, as the changes we make now, can take upto 1 or 2 months to show up in the search engines!

I started out designing flash websites with cool console style navigation because they were fun and impressed clients easily.

But I have learned the hard way when it comes to long term clients who were initially happy asking about accessability, SEO, content management, and scalability.

I still use flash occationally but have a much more practical approach now.

You've covered some specific details regarding design shortcomings that I agree with wholeheartedly. My sense is that far too often a site is developed without an extensive plan that integrates the site into the overall oraganizational or corporate plan and culture. I feel that much development is occuring in a vacuum rather than being viewed as an extension or doorway, as appropriate, that effectively achieves the desired conversion if that is even clearly understood at the outset.
