  • this is awesome, was searching for wood projects videos using stone tools and couldn't find anything, make more :)

  • the sound is off

  • How long your bows are? And what type of string do you use? Is it have to stretch? Thanks

  • Poor video

  • Fascinating to watch, though I'm glad humans learned to work metal. :)

  • Your flint scraper at first looks like a huge river rock. Is there a way to identify it? 3:30 btw

  • id use a axe lol good vid man hope you had a good result

  • Really effing cool. That's what I call getting back to basics. When it all goes to hell this is what tech will be.

  • @Antiks72 Probably not. In america atleast guns will be very common when shtf.

In non-USA places such as here in scotland, i guess this bow would be premium shit.

  • @Pawnbroker00 no guns in Scotland??

  • @Pawnbroker00 I was asking if you have guns or if you're not allowed to own them in Scotland? Are you allowed to hunt there?

  • Man,I love your videos...So relaxing....I don't know if it was your intention to talk like this, but it is so calm....Greetings from Croatia

  • i tried to survive 2 weeks in a forest and i've made a bow like this :D

  • wonderful technique

great work, so informative, I like it!!!

    thanks

  • ash is good and about 60 inches is a good start

  • i have a 66" recurve, it's a great bow, 60-68" should be good

  • i use fishing line to.

  • very very very cooooooooooooool

  • Ey man! First of all, great job. Im an iniciated archer and i wonder you if you can send my the steps written. My english isnt too good to understand all the voice. What kind of wood do you use? And the ... extrange table ,what is it name?

    thanks and congrats again

  • I would suggest trying to get ahold of the "Traditional Bowyers Bible". Its a good book that talkes about all of the aspects of building a traditional bow.

  • Shaving horses weren't 18th century, they were used well before then.

  • Good point. Truth is, I know this. While rambling on during the video taping I tend to say some dopey things most times. I'm just kind of winging it as you can probably tell!

  • how long do dry ..hickory.and osage.and do u use horn? i make my own bows to cause there so fuckin overpriced in archery shops.

  • where did you get the tools?

  • I made the tools (except for the nicer looking stone axe...that was made by a real pro - Scott Silsby of Virginia).

  • does he sell axes?

  • I'm fucking pissed its a real good video but the thing is that I'm excellent at building bow and arrows but theres no freakin branches to make any!i made 3bows and 4arrows and ran out of straight branches!

  • Ever try looking for straight river reeds? Tall grass? etc.?

  • don't the first 2 minutes of this video make you want to go an give your gransfors a big hug! lol. great vid tho 5/5

  • where did u get all those tools?

  • He would have made them.

  • Yep, I made them...except for the one axe (see above)

  • Fascinating, its good to see people doing this kind of thing, keeping the old traditions alive. 5/5

  • is that a homemade axe

  • were do you get the chirck

  • "chert"

  • the people in my village think i'm crazy because i keep going into the woods to find a good bow stick or branch. plus, i'm 16 and they think i shouldn't "play" with bows. stupid village people.

  • dood i know what you mean. any one with an interest in bush craft is a "weirdo"

  • sorry but ur not cutting with it right u go left strait left left strait

  • were did you get that big piece of Flint/chert I live in alabama and i am 13 years old and i love to make bows and atlatls and arrows and darts and spears, but i can't ever find any flint or chert or any of those to make good points for my things.

  • hey man i saw you on modern marvels not to long ago

  • Out were I live we have a river full of stone tools from the Native people, its cool to see similar tools in use today.

  • nice to see some stone work. and some one actually using stone tools.

  • I wonder how they first worked out that a stick and string can be turned into a lethal weapon...

  • with no material object distractions like modern days... you sit/walk around alot with not much to do - from what i'm guessing and have read i'd say you'd get pretty bored and your mind would wander alot. Not to mention, you're life was MUCH more simple and revolved around just surviving and living - hunting.. etc.

more and more often i've been reading allot about findings/evidence that psychedelic mushrooms and substances encouraged quite allot of interesting ideas from long ago..

  • would be fun to know. I do not find it that hard to believe that drugs helped the development of weapons like the bow.

  • man i live in georgia and i cant find any cept 4 a bout a 5 boud rock in my drive way

  • Did you buy the flint or find it? I live in South Carolina and cant find it in creeks or anything where do I look for flint?

  • thxs..i needed this knowldge 4 a SS project

  • is ther a specific height the bow shud be?

  • thank you, this shows me how much of a happy guy I´m to own a steel axe lol

  • I remember when one of my friends tried making a bow after he saw me make one. Hes one was just a stick and a stick connected at both ends, it was just a straight stick haha

  • this is insanely awesome!! you have great markmanship!!

  • i thought woad was what the celts called axes....im so confused

    awsome bow mate!!!!!

  • Woad is the plant that they used to make the blue warpaint that the ancient celts used to wear.

  • really?

    ok cool!

    i know things now

  • woad is a type of wood that can produce a blue dye i believe. I am not sure if it has any links with the north American "witch wood" which actually glows blue due to a certain fungus that grows on it.

  • oh

    blue dye?

    how?

dip it in water and collect dregs?

  • its actually made by grinding its flowers (which are yellow lol) into dusk then mixing with animal fats. Some how it produces a blue colour, believed by the celts to cause invisibility and protection in battle. The tint is used by some militarys as it does actually make you very hard to see at night.

  • it's because blue light has VERY small energy and that causes you to not be seen. another popular camo colour is pink.

  • Does it matter how long the bow is?

  • The longer bows are a little bit more stable and less prone to breakage, especially self bows.

  • iam 100% galier ^^ austria

  • you killed my pet rock

  • you should make a video or two teaching how to make the tools you used to make this bow

    ^-^

also, idk if it show's this further in the video, but i would really like to know how to make cordage from something other than flax and sinew.

  • jail breaker yes maple can be used and good video sir...

  • Damn...I keep deleting questions by hitting "remove" rather than "reply." I'm going blind or something! Yes, maple makes good bows! Just about any hardwood will work. Heck, any wood will work - some species are better than others though. Dense hardwoods are best in general.

  • Great video man, Can I say just one thing.

mangadude9 asked could you make a video showing how to make the tools that you used, i.e: The axe etc.

That would be great, 5 stars.

  • i tried making a bow like this but i thin it down to much before i know it. can u help me

  • You have to go slower perhaps. There's only a small bit of difference in thickness between a 60lb bow and a 20lb bow! Once it starts bending, you have to go really slow taking off wood. There's lots of info on the web on making "self-bows" (all wood bows). You might do a google search for how-to info.

  • nice work sir!

  • is he really talking?

  • READ THIS:: where do u get flint rock?? how to u know it is flin? please awser!! (PS. im a noob)

  • ((ps. shh your not alone, i am too)) dont tell :D

  • the flint stones are like a little white but most of the blue way like a scale. The flint stones u can use to make fire or wepond or also equipments. I am not sure where u can find them by you but by me (sweden) i dig in the ground where it is sand over and under its earth. I find quite much stones and some are Flint

  • too difficult. this view inspires me to just buy a bow.

  • would love to learn more about flint knapping, do you have any suggestions?

  • You are a very knowledgable person on this subject. I can't wait to see the power generated from this bow.

  • This is an excellent, highly informative video. Great explanation, wonderfully demonstrated by a person who seems like a real nice guy! Like his style; cool, humble, great at explaining and sharing this ancient art! 100% reccomended! For me, sound is fine, no problems.

  • The problem with the sound is probably software related. Some software won't allow you to lign up the audio and video perfectly. Or its possibly that your sound recorder dosen't consistently record in real time. Good video by the way.

  • The sound effects are just added in throughout this whole video and make it hard to hear the commentary.

  • Yea, the sound is all messed up. I'm a novice with these video cameras and editing is always a nightmare for me. The sound is off from the action and I don't know why. it's the narration that's added afterward. Maybe that's what throws the timing of the sound off??? Suggestions always welcome!

  • I'm getting better at editing. I cant say im fast but I can make good stuff. I'm editing a World of Warcraft i made using their cinematics. I dont know if you can download iMovie HD but thats what I use. Its works pretty good. Oh and about the sound being off with the video, ......let me know if you have a video editing program first lol so i can tell you how to fix it

  • has anybody noticed that the noise when he hits it isnt aligne to when he hits is on 4:00

    NuthinButTheTruth

  • It depends on the bow and how high you want it strung. My strings are usually somewhere around 3" shorter I guess.

  • ur storys bored me

  • That's why you're a weghead1000! Don't tell anyone, but they bored me too!

  • rotflmfao omg that was witty lol

  • lol

  • 2-3 inches

  • hey man where did you get all of the stones to make the bow? if your willing i would buy some from you. only if you have extra.

  • can you make and sell a bow that is request???

  • nice vid bro

    very welll done

    :P

  • Very well done.

That you produced the bow using tools of your own manufacture only adds to the cool factor.

I hope to see more of these primitive tech posts in the future.

  • Yeah i woulnt touch that bow since you already stuck it up your ass. That bow is super damn awesome. Also the method he used in the making. If you dont like the video dont watch it. Dont watch it and brag bout it ok.

  • NICE, you are realy good at this. the cave-man would be inpressed

  • Tom I have to say you are the savior of you tube when it comes to all things primitive, if I see one more video about a bic pen titled how to make a bow im gona be sick..

come visit paleoplanet its the best :)

  • i enjoy making and shooting bows ALLOT. probably in my blood from my english ancestors

  • I also enjoyed these videos alot. is there anyway to get a copy of these to add to my collection. this is something i've always wanted to try, thanks for sharing.awesome

  • Awesome!

  • Well done. I love how you stayed true to keeping it lithic, (minus the shaving horse).

  • Its about time someone thought to do this - this is excellent! THANK YOU!!

  • DAmn dude! this on is really nice. I only make primitive bows with steel tools. no powertools though. se basically tools from the iron age. I should try this also. very nice
