I dont understand why the video for this was removed. Its not on Youtube, its not one the DVD, and unless you recorded it that night, it is virtually impossible to find. kd's best performance of this song ever was at the Juno Awards in Winnipeg in 2005. It was an iconic Canadian moment and i was glad she tried to repeat it at the opening of the Olympics, but watch and listen to to the youtube video of the Juno performance, and you will see what putting heart and soul into a song is all about.

The producer of the event has stated that ALL the music performances at the opening ceremonies were pre-recorded. At the closing ceremonies, yes, Neil Young and some others were live. kd lang is acting here. There are "gates" to the mic that enable her to appear singing but the audio feed is coming from a pre-recorded version. Even opera singer Measha Brueggergosman who is technically the best singer of the ceremonies had to pre-record. It's show biz at the Olympics. Enjoy it for what it is.
i live in vancouver, and i do know that they were having some microphone glitches, so they recorded it a little bit before the performance, but its pretty obvious that there was still alot of emotion put ino the performance

I wish I could say it was live but I don't think anything was live other than a French language song before the torch arrived (which wasn't broadcast on many networks included NBC). Having pre-recorded pieces does 2 things, 1. Guarantees quality of sound to EVERYBODY present and watching on TV. and 2. Gives definite cues for stage set managers and choreographers instead of having to slow down or speed up because the musicians and singers are at a slightly different tempo.

It's not like they DIDN'T sing it after all. But I was just a stage hand so I don't know all the details.

I love KD...she models so beautifully and powerfully what being a Lesbian is..beautiful and powerful when we have the courage to be who we really are. Leonard Cohen wrote this and was the first to record it. Even he says no one can sing it like Kd. When she sings this song you can feel the raw emotions in how it was written. A very long list of artists have recorded this song and no one compares.
We can't see the video because The Olympics Committee owns the rights and have declined to release it at this time. I am sure they will find some way to market it to generate funds for future Olympics.

This was amazing at the Olympics - I heard it first in the dress rehearsal, where it gave me goosebumps it was so beautifu and haunting. I heard it again at the Opening Ceremonies and I had tears streaming down my face - I have never heard anything so beautiful.

i was so shocked when i saw KD sing this during the opening ceremonies. i cried because her voice was so serene. after watching and enjoying the other performers, i was floored by her voice and couldn't help but feel humbled by her talent. such beauty!
Well Bryan adams and nelly furtado definitely lip synched... His voice started before the mic was at his mouth. But when a song is sung like this it is virtually impossible to synch to... Off tempo moments, mixed up rhythms... And it's just not her style... This is 100% real and anyone who says otherwise can deal with my polar bear, moose, beaver, and hockey stick eh? Canada FTW.

The sound quality is much better than this one, and also the cinematography is awesome for T.V. What an insult to k.d. lang and her fans to insinuate that this song was prerecorded. @1Rufuslover I haven't gone looking myself but I read somewhere that the CTV site has a store that sells a boxed DVD set of Olympic highlights which includes this song, as well it should because it certainly was one of the brightest highlights of the event.

@118cecil I was at the opening ceremony, working security, and I spoke to the technicians who told me that of all the performers at the ceremony, only KD Lang actually sang her song live, all the other performers were miming to recordings,but she wanted to actually sing for real, she was the best part of the ceremony, made your hair stand on end, what a performer.
@79274333 KD Lang is such a warm hearted person. I could and many other people could tell you that all the other songs were all mimicked because at times their mouthes didnt match the words and that should not happen on a live song. You are lucky to have worked there BTW.

Fantastic!! I was watching the olympics and reading the paper until this came on. I had heard of KD but hat not heard anything she did. But when I heard this I was blown away. I must have listened to it 50 times on utube.

I love this song and k.d. lang's version is rivaled only by the four norwegian singers Espen Lind. Askil Holm, Alejandro Fuentes, and Kurt Nilsen. Each version is special in its own way. I listen to both. Bravo, guys!

i was so shocked when i saw KD sing this during the opening ceremonies. i cried because her voice was so serene. after watching and enjoying the other performers, i was floored by her voice and couldn't help but feel humbled by her talent. such beauty!

Well Bryan adams and nelly furtado definitely lip synched... His voice started before the mic was at his mouth. But when a song is sung like this it is virtually impossible to synch to... Off tempo moments, mixed up rhythms... And it's just not her style... This is 100% real and anyone who says otherwise can deal with my polar bear, moose, beaver, and hockey stick eh? Canada FTW.

WOW...10 months plus ago. This "Non-pre-recorded" performance by K.D. Lang will be one I won't forget "EVER". Sung by a Canadian & written by a Canadian in CANADA ! I've listened to many versions of this song by various people, also by KD. ''NONE" could come close to how KD Lang sang it at the 2010 Olympics. I have goose bumps now just listening to it again ! I was not there, but I did watch the 2005 performance of the same song by the same artist at the Juno awards, which is also on youtube. The sound quality is much better than this one, and also the cinematography is awesome for T.V. What an insult to k.d. lang and her fans to insinuate that this song was prerecorded. It is what the new, fly-by-night artists need to rely on, not a pro like her.

She catches her breath a few times and even speaks at one point. For crying out loud are we so used to the no talents of today lip syncing that we just assume everyone does it???

@118cecil I was at the opening ceremony, working security, and I spoke to the technicians who told me that of all the performers at the ceremony, only KD Lang actually sang her song live, all the other performers were miming to recordings,but she wanted to actually sing for real, she was the best part of the ceremony, made your hair stand on end, what a performer.
