The Bible undermines Christian teachings because the religion has taken it out of context. Jesus was speaking to Jews not Gentiles. Jesus sermon was not the most spiritually inspiring. Buddha was far more clear & accurate from a psychological point of view. Buddhism has been doing for 2500 years what Christianity has never accomplished - cultivating and maintaining mental health.

I get it. Death is a scary thing and it relieves some of the fear. But for me, my beliefs enrich my life, not my death. Knowing that I have only one life to live, with no "eternal life" or whatever, it makes every passing moment so much more valuable.

If you want to be a Christian, use the Bible to get you thinking about philosophical and moral issues. For that it is very useful. But believing anything in it without using the rationality your schooling was supposed to give you will only lead to extremism and narrow mindedness.

The narrator is a silly fool. You can't take what's in Levit. and Deut. out of context. It says it there. Plain text. The Old Testament openly advocates murder, slavery, and rape. It's an out-of-date storybook that is no less ridiculous than the Greek myths. Obama's right.
Also, you say that the Ten Commandments came out of Deut. So what? The Ten Commandments aren't that important to non-Christians. We're smart enough to get that those things are wrong. We don't need some book to tell us that.

@Spongemagic Perfectly constructed response. Very accurate observation. How are we supposed to rely on religion to guide the laws we abide by as a country, when we are a country of many faiths? It doesn't make any sense. Laws should reflect morality not religion. We all follow the same laws, we don't all follow the same religion. Whoever posted this probably thinks that all Muslims are terrorists as well. Bigotry is what needs to go to the way side in this country.

That said, I was not made in God's image. If there were some type of God, that would certainly NOT be good news. The God depicted in the Bible is a vindictive and spiteful god. I wouldn't even tolerate him as a boss at an office job, let alone an almighty creator. I would feel shallow and meaningless if I found out that I was not in control of my destiny.

@icewomen881 Oh, I promise you. I'm not opening up. I don't care for anything written in the bible, because just because it is written down, doesn't mean it's true. It's nice to believe in God. I get it. Death is a scary thing and it relieves some of the fear. But for me, my beliefs enrich my life, not my death. Knowing that I have only one life to live, with no "eternal life" or whatever, it makes every passing moment so much more valuable.

@icewomen881 I am living a great life. There's nothing better than being in control of what happens to you. To be responsible for every bad thing, every good thing that happens to you, it's hard sometimes, but it's well worth it. Watch some Richard Dawkins documentaries. "The God Delusion" was beautiful and uplifting for me. Now, you want me to read the bible, but no matter how much I do, it won't make me "happier" because I don't believe in it. It's just as real as Harry Potter to me.

@Spongemagic Well you probably need some guidance reading the Bible go to a Christian website for help, God says " if you knock at the door i will be open it" Or even try praying to Him tell Him that you don't believe in him and tell him to open your eyes that you will believe. you might not believe in God but there is a God and He will lead you to Him! You shouldn't need a bible to give you a reason to live. I give myself reason to live. That's what I'm saying. It's liberating. It's a beautiful feeling. I would hate to refrain from doing bad things because I'm afraid of punishment. Instead, I refrain from those things because they're wrong in MY own eyes and ideals.

Religion and polotics don't mix. Such as in middle eastern countries due to there religion there is no freedom of speech women are treated unfairly. I beleive christianity i did scripture in school and i do beleive there is a god the bible is good for guiding people on to the right path in life. As if human beings wouldn't have put something like the 10 commandments together naturally. It's a simple thing called natural law. Your defense(the ten commandments) of Deuteronomy on the other hand has nothing to do with the context of the passage Obama was referring to. the "if one part is good, then all parts must be applied"-argument is a bad one, and does not persuade me.
