  • I noticed that the 2nd verse about the Bible story was cut from the song. Where was this concert? Was it in communist China? Just wondering

  • Wow these two lovelys made me remember what a wonderful song this one was1 Would love to have a recording of their collaberation.

  • Shania, I love you, but Alison Krauss is the best part of this. <3

  • Nice.

  • God... autotune much?

  • Who better to sing this than Eileen "Shania" Twain who also grew up in poverty.

  • There is some elecronic processing going on at 1.59 sound false.

  • I am not particularly a country music fan, or Shania Twain fan really, but I was at this Kennedy Center Honors. Shania's voice is most definitely not being auto-tuned. All you have to do is listen to a few of her other incredible songs to know that it is just her beautiful, unique tone. Even her speaking voice has that smoky timbre. This was a highlight of the night. Two such amazing talents singing a touching song from one of America's all-time talents.

  • Two fabulous voices singing a beautiful and moving song written by another beautiful voice. What more could anyone ask?

  • @Lavendel59 ~ Our Sweet Dear Gabi...

A wonderful Duet Share our dearest friend...

Wishing you a Beautiful Up Coming Weekend....

    Love&Hugs

    Bob&Robby

  • You only need to look a Dollys face to judge what the writer thought. We all enjoy the song, Dolly was reliving what the song was all about

  • I to agree with the auto-tuned. But I love here and her singing. She's always had a problem with live singing but with her writing beauty and voice who's judging . 5 star

  • Too bad my coat is made in China.

Both are talented. An excellent song. Love it!

  • @himarty lmao

  • Shania is most definitely being autotuned in this performance

  • im sure both women would do anything for Dolly

  • Dolly was my favorite singer when I was young. I went to see Shania in '95 before she was famous because I thought she was great. I've absolutely LOVED Alison Kraus from the first time I heard her.... Man, do I have good taste or what!

  • Shania is beautifully talented, what a gem. Duke sucks.

  • Interesting the amount of people trying to compare Shania to Alison...I thought they were both there to pay tribute to a country legend? Just a thought!

  • You can convert this or any youtube video to an mp3 at instantmp3s..com

  • The greatest singers are the most humble. When you know you're good, there's no need to show off. You help others when asked.....'nuff said.

  • Allison kicked ass

  • Dolly has said often that she can't really pick a 'favorite' song of hers, but this one is very close to her heart because it's a true story about her mother... you can tell she's trying hard not to get emotional listening to Shania and Alison singing it... what a beautiful tribute to an AMAZING performer in her own right.

  • oh my lord. oh my blodoy lord. thats possibly the best duet ive ever heard. Shania twain one of my favourite singers and Alisan Krauss a beauttiufl singer holy shit they sound magical together! 6/5!!

  • Shania <3

  • beautiful voice complimenting very touching song. Thanks. I keep listening to it many times a day. Luv u shania

  • for those of you saying shania should not have sung this song only dolly should sing it... shania sang it because they were honoring dolly. allison sang "jolene" alone before this performance. carrie underwood and kenny rogers sang a dolly song, vince gill sang "i will always love you" the point is a tribute to dolly, she was being honored. if you don't like shania than don't watch her, this is for the shania fans that enjoy watching.

  • My 2 favorite female country artists...together...ok...prefer Alison Krauss a bit more . lol

  • alison krauss has such a beautiful voice...and it blended well when she backed up shania...but i wanna hear more of her! im addicted...fave song by alison is new favorite. her voice is butter & velvet lol

  • I'm so glad Allison was there, or it would have been another murder on music row. Shania just can't sing this song. Sorry.

  • @vical87 why would you say that? it was great and dolly got emotional and you could tell she liked it... but we have our own opinions and im sure more people like this version then did not

  • i never feel of being tired listening to this song.. over and over again..

  • just beautiful..perfect song and singers.

  • Ok, this is the second video I've seen of Shania Twain and Alison Krauss singing together with Alison basically singing backup. Nothing against shania bc I love her too, but something ain't right here.

  • @damienca2ga

It is probably a musical decision based on how their voices work and blend or at what ranges they are most comfortable. In amateur groups you often have the poorer singers singing lead and the better ones singing back-up because it is a nuts and bolts issue: Who can actually sing the notes right? The melody is "easier" in terms of the notes. Among professionals like these, they can use more subtle criteria. Once the banal issue of notes is out of the way, both are hard to do.

  • Best song for mothers day. Beautiful message.

  • great song brings back good memories!

  • Alison Krauss as backup, only in country,my friends.

  • Two legends, I love them both

  • I love both Shania and Allison. I have been a fan of Allison since the moment I first heard her back in 1992 in Minnesota. Both have beautiful voices.

  • Hotrodjohn2---GET A LIFE. Everyone has their OWN opinion. Something/Someone ISN'T BETTER, JUST DIFFERENT. Shania rocks AND writes and is a great person. Alison is also great w/ a angelic voice. Dolly's the cream of the crop-PERIOD. She writes, and sings like an angel. I never get tired of Dolly's voice, where I can listen to an hour of Alison, although beautiful, sounds the same in each song. To each their OWN opinion. Give it a rest.

  • @MIKETOMEK

    Ditto what MIKETOMEK SAID...

this Is a fabulous way of honoring Dolly Parton...

  • Aww I love this, great job. I believe Carrie Underwood and Kenny Rogers sang a song for Dolly on this night as well.

  • BEAUTIFUL! this song was sung just right, considering when it was written..the harmony was close and very well done- of course i love Allison and Shania. i wouldn't change a thing! so THERE!

  • Good Lord, people need to understand harmony. Listen carefully. Alison is NOT singing the melody.

Singing harmony is harder than singing the melody.

  • Amazing

  • cheeez. like the song but, shania is hogging allll the spotlight, barely letting alison get a word or a note in

  • When a singer is singing backup on a song that is what happens. Shania was the lead singer here and Allison backed her up. There was no compitition involved or egos.

  • Some Alison fans want to attack Shania's singing because they can't accept that she has plenty of talent. I have seen her live several times and I have seen her sing a cappella on talk shows and she is awesome. I have even seen her let fans sing a part of a song at her concerts and believe me there was no autotune going on, so stop with the crap people! This woman is very talented whether you want to accept it or not.

As for Alison, she has the voice of an angel and is a rare talent.

  • yepper to THAT guyluvsbeauty.!

  • Its a shame that the producers at the Kennedy Center were so afraid of offending anyone that they chose to exclude the entire meaning of the songs allusion to a coat of many colors.

For the full version, do a search on youtube for

Shania Twain And Dolly Parton Coat Of Many Colors

A clip from Oprah contains a duet with Shania on alto lead and Dolly on soprano backup, along with some intro comments from Shania.

Im sure Shania and Alison would have wanted to perform the full song.

  • After making fun of me:

And I didnt understand it for I felt that I was rich.

And I told them of the love that mama sewed in every stitch.

And I told them all the story mama told me as she sewed.

And how my coat of many colors was worth more than all their clothes

When the singing jumps to But they didnt understand it one is only poor if they choose to be, the listener is left unaware of what the children did not understand and why Dolly felt rich .

    continued...

  • Missing lyrics:

Shania's performance is beautiful and genuine, since she grew up very poor as Dolly did.

Two sets of lyrics are missing:

After I was rich as I could be:

"As she sewed she told a story from the Bible she had read,

About a coat of many colors Joseph wore, and then she said,

"Perhaps this coat will bring you good luck and happiness."

And I just couldn't wait to wear it as she blessed it with a kiss."

    continued...

  • Shania and Allison need to make an Album together... like NAO!!!

  • You are SO right.

  • That was pretty awesome! Shania.... OW OW she is FRIGGIN HOT! Allison has a good voice but Shania owned this!

  • Shania does have a nice voice, but Alison has a BEAUTIFUL voice. Both very talented people, but at least Alison is real country, not the fake crap like Shania,or Taylor Swift.

  • why do all you folks have the need to put people against each other... these are two very beautiful and talented artists in their own right... just enjoy

  • @Steelrigg lol I wish i could sing like either one of them.

  • @Steelrigg Agreed, Alison is just happy being up there singing. Shania herself has said Alison has the most angelic voice she has ever seen. They have collaborated a lot together. I honestly believe they are friends and love performing together.

  • I can see that Dolly was singin' along. That is a sign you did it right.

  • I think Shania and Allison were perfect for this song. I've grown up listening to the two of them and they both are magnificent vocalists. They both brought something unique to the song.

  • Holy shit.Shania's voice is SO obviously Autotuned on this one it's pathetic.

  • i noticed that too

  • I agree with you about the obvious autouning of Shania's voice. Still sounds ok ,but I wouldn't have thought she needed it.

  • Yeah,I mean dont get me wrong,Ive enjoyed Shania's music from time to time, but when I heard this I was blown away by the obvious A-tuning immediatly.Sounded like that corny ass old Cher tune.

  • God gives different gifts to each singer

  • I like Shania too, but Allison's voice is way better. She is up there with the greatest of all times vocally.

  • OMFG....

  • Shania is not even close in talent to Alison Krauss in either voice or as a musician. Alison grew up winning violin contests when she was 13, her voice has matured to a level of beauty that no one except maybe Emmylou Harris or Martina Mcbride could approach. Shania is a great performer but her voice is not in the same league with Alison.

  • i beg do differ...if only allison could say shes the highest selling female in all of country music..

  • ok i correct myself...the highest selling album in all of country music

  • @hondarox715 Let's put it this way dude, MacDonalds is the most popular restaurant in the world. Would you really say it is the best food you ever ate?

  • whats MacDonalds? is that some some of scottish haggis joint? I recon the most popular fast food restaurant is McDonalds the hamburger place.

  • @bigknives1 LOL dude, been a while since I ate there and the experience was far from memorable so excuse the misspelling. Point still stands though. As I recon it would also if they had been serving haggis. Since we ARE nitpicking though.."Scottish haggis" is there any other nation sporting haggis on their national menu? ;)

  • lol touche

  • thats different though...shanias like the modern day queen of country..or at least she was in her prime

  • @hondarox715 Maybe so but at the same time Alison was the queen of bluegrass. Both facts are beside the point, no matter how you spin it, popularity is no standard for excellence in music. But yes, taste differ and some are more evolved than others ;D ( just a joke dude!) Soo if you want to say you like Shania better that's one thing. If you want to stake a claim for her being a better singer, you will have to do better than citing popularity. You'd have to go by established technical abilities.

  • i wish we could have both allison and shania record the same exact song and see which one becomes more popular...shanias the more popular one because she makes good music and doesnt sound boring on every song she sings...theres on song and one only that i like by allison...whiskey lullaby...i prolly wouldnt even like that if it wasnt for brad...

  • @hondarox715 Dude, it's clear from your channel you are nothing but a troll. You actually have only 10 faves after more than 2 years and only one of those is Shania, the rest of the music vids prove you don't have a clue about music as well.

Go find yourself some real friends instead of trolling on the net little man! I am done with you. :)

  • hahahaha sorry im not a nerd and i use youtube only to watch videos...who the fuck cares if i use my channel you loser...i think your the one who needs the life hahahaha

  • @reddragonready hahahaha .. hey Red, you still out there defending Allison's honor ... ? ! ... not much of a debate here .. poor Shania is even autotuned in this one .. I'm thinkin' that if there's a debate, it's got to be Allison versus Norah Jones or Katie Melua .. what do you think !?

  • @mkearley49 LOL Yes indeed! And in light of that....it's Alison with one *l* ! An Allison with the 2 *l* who can really sing would be Allison Moorer!

I like Norah Jones very much but she's not really in Alison's class either.

Her latest album proves that. And Melua really doesn't have the control of Alison, doesn't play the guitar on the level Alison plays the fiddle and certainly lacks the musical vision and originality.

  • @mkearley49 There is way more to Alison's work than the pretty soft singing voice a lot of people only notice.

Hence the 27 Grammies not just for singing but also best album, producing and best instrumental and critical acclaim for the production of Alan Jackson's album or the Rheba single.

So again..yes indeed..still out here "defending" what really needs no defense! ;-)

Good to see your still out here too! :-)

  • @reddragonready eeh, maybe ... "doesn't have the control" "doesn't play the guitar on the level " This sounds a little too focused on the mechanical aspects of a performance. I would argue that it's more about how the artist made you connect to the emotion of the song rather than the the accuracy of the mechanics. It's not a singing competition ... it's about how the artist made you feel. I've heard a couple of performances from Katie and Norah recently that have really impressed me.

  • @mkearley49 Eeeh, weren't you the one mentioning Shania using autotune? ;D

Of course the emotion is the most important aspect but a better control of the mechanics allows for a better conveying of emotions. More range, more subtleties. Though imo there IS a cut off point where the emotion gets lost in the mechanics, that is hardly the case here.

  • @mkearley49 But like I say, I think Norah is great and I have several vids of her performances and love them. Katie is also not my thing because I find her songs a bit uninteresting. One of the main aspects I love about AK is her unerring song choice. Don't know any artist I like so many of their songs just for the song itself.

  • @hondarox715 And there I am afraid, you'd have no case. :(

    So bestselling yes, that's Shania.

Better musician, not by a long shot! :)

  • it takes the better musician to be a best seller..she didnt have the best selling album by a female artist for no reason

  • Comment removed

  • Well if you know anything about talent you would know record sales is really irrelevant. I guess KISS and Garth Brooks are the most talented too under your theory. Anyone who can get a big label and Mutt Lang behind them can sell millions of albums if they have some level of talent, and Shania is very talented, just cant sing like Alison.

  • NO ONE KNOWS WHO ALISON IS???ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? OBVIOUSLY you are not a musician or know much about music, ANY real musician would tell you that ALISON KRAUSS is and has been in very high demand as a fiddle player and singer to MANY artists, SHE HAS MORE GRAMMY AWARDS THAN ANY FEMALE ARTIST and by the way Grammys arent based on HOW MANY RECORDS YOU SELL. As to voice pitch, consistency and note accuracy ANY VOICE TEACHER would tell you Alison is hands down better.

  • haha ok sure..just look at her views on youtube her thrid highest view count is a duet with shania twains singing forever and for always..in which alison sounds like shit and shania sounds amazing..oviously im in the wrong place for this discussion considering you are all clearly die hard alison fans..which i find to be funny

  • Go see them both live and see what you think, there is no comparison, . Funny how most people on here are looking at a Shania video and saying Alison sings better... hmmmm But, Shania is great nonetheless, I am a fan of hers too.

  • ive seens hania live..ive never heard any other artist sound exactly as they do on the cd in a live concert...and fuck autotone...she never needed that back when mutt heard about her and when she got her record deal..so thats bullshit

  • cant argue with someone who ignores reality. Alison never uses one, and does sound the same live. You dont have to like it but its true....

  • Oh and by the way Hondarox, ask around and do a little research on Shania and her use of Autotune to make her sound good, enough said.

  • Shame Alison was not singing this solo...she would have really done Dolly proud.

Sorry but Shania Twain is not in the same league as those two.

  • she did sing a song, she sung jolene that night

  • How adorable is Dolly mouthing the words along with her? Heart breaking song

  • wow i'm dissapointed she used auto-tune for this performance. shania has a beauitful voice, she doesn't need freakin auto-tune.

  • One of the greatest songs of alltime...shame they used all that auto-tuning, Shania and Allison do NOT need it! Still...the best! Love you, DOLLY, for this and all the masterpieces you're written!

  • LOL Tastes differ!

  • Oh, I think, that both are very attractive :)

But I'm an old man ;)

  • Hey!! Since I am about the same age I take exception with the "old man" wise crack! ;D

Anyway, I agree on them both being attractive! My response was to who more so! :)

  • typical american sentiment, it doesn't matter how talented you are all that matters is how you look. Randy you are probably a poor pock faced fat man living in mom's basement, huh?

  • How much charity does Alison have to give to Shania? She probably feels bad for her so she sings back up for her. Yes, sounds like voice enhancement going on here... no surprise.

  • NICE !

  • Beautiful dress Shania, but right nasally...

    Sinutab Twain

  • i dont even think she is being edited lol, she has never needed editing before... and i doubt she lost her voice lol

  • I was this poor and lived the same shame .I am so glad that someone like dolly made a song like this .Shania looks great and did a very good job singing this song.I gess you can't ask for a better video 3 of the best singers in one video.Thank you for the post Fred

  • What gorgeous singing. And I really love the shot of Dolly singing along from the balcony.

  • Great music. Dolly is a legend of country music! And Shania is beautiful and sang very well, I love you Shania!

  • Thank you so much for posting this.

Dolly is an AMAZING writer of such

    a fantastic song!

    Banjoistically yours,

    Jon Eric

  • who is T pain?

  • oh i know she was waaaay before T-pain....but T-pain brags about using the auto tune...Shania kinda pretends she doesn't or something...and why Alison who can actually sing wasn't given a bigger part doesn't make sense to me...oh well...at least Dolly seemed to enjoy it and that's what's important

  • Um, Alison is great but Shania Twain is right up there with Dolly when it comes to country fame, one of the highest album selling artists ever of any genre, she is huge world wide.

  • Country fame yes, but Shania is one dimensional. Alison was huge in bluegrass way before she hit the country stage. She's also won a few more grammys. Alison has been a huge hit in three genre's, bluegrass, country, and now rock/folk. I'm a fan of Shania, but I'd take Alison over her any day of the week.

  • A few more? She won more grammies than any other female in grammy history! And there's only two guys who won more! LOL

  • It was a sarcastic comment on the a few more.

  • Okay! Missed that because frankly, I have no idea how many Twain has. All's I know is less!

No harm done though, just told folks exactly how impressive AK's grammy status really is! ;)

  • It's all good, I was afraid that my sarcasm wouldn't translate well to youtube.

  • Well, I know from personal experience many times it doesn't!

And I am not sure rock/folk is the correct niche for RS? Personally I like to use the term Americana as it pretty much covers all her music! ;)

  • that's what great about Alison. she does not care what role was given to her, she's always done it so perfectly. standing out is not important to her. she's the real deal!

  • good call

  • @maxthebee Thats her best quality as a true, pure musician....she cares about the music first, not everything else thats going on. But best believe AK could outsing most if and when she wants to. AK is as talented as they come. I love shania twain and I think she is wonderful herself, but please no one compare her to AK that's just not fair to Shania.

  • Shania's voice is not unique!!!!! If you listen closely you can here the auto tune! Come on Shania...leave that for T-Pain.

  • did this way before we knew who t-pain was, just saying

  • Please shania sounds great live.

  • haha negative. Go listen to a little more Krauss.

  • She sound great as well.Differint styles.

  • why is Shania lead?

  • This is really nice. Alison's voice is more similar to Dolly's, but it sounds nice with Shania's voice in lead. Thanks for posting it.

  • Shocking. Shania Twain is singing through an Auto-Tune, which is an electronic processor that corrects her pitch. Cher uses the device as a special effect in her song "Do You Believe in Life after Love?". Here it is being used a bit more discreetly for pitch correction. If this isn't proof that Shania is nothing more than a model, then I don't know what is. How embarassing to have to use the device in front of the mega-talented Alison Krauss.

  • A "model" who wrote some really good tunes though! ;) Personally I don't like her nasal quality but let's not forget she does more than just singing. :)

  • I think Shania and Allison did a splendid job with this song! It is also very touching seeing as the way Shania grew up with financial problems so it's great to see her connect with the lyrics so well. Fab job, ladies! Thanks for posting. :D

  • this is truly beautiful. i do respect shania twain as an artist, and alison krauss' voice completes the emotional evocation of the song. dolly looks on with a sobering tinge of reality: this song was her life, and these two young singers honor her well.

  • They have the singers backwards. No offenence but Alison should have been the main singer.

  • They are both so talented. Shania's voice is so unique, which makes it that more beautiful. Great song, and great fitting considering Shania was also dirt poor growing up. Awesome!

  • Does anyone know if this concert (the Kennedy Center honors) is available on dvd?

  • my fantasy would be for idiots such as yourself to realize comments as stupid as this --- add NOTHING to this world.. and make others question the goodness of mankind...

  • - just curious; does anyone know when this Dolly Parton song was recorded=this concert took place? Thanx!

  • This was at the Kennedy Center Honors for Dolly Parton.

  • Thanx!

  • So beautiful

I like this song, its simple but cute!

  • This was Kennedy Center honors when Dolly was inducted. And rightfully so.

  • Is Shania's voice enhanced in this performance? Or is it some sort of audio artifact? Alison's vocals sound normal to me but Shania's sounds like Kid Rock's on the song; "Only God Knows". Listen close.

Don't be hatin. I'm just askin.

  • Nooo, i think she just has a really good voice.

  • is this on DVD?

  • Ok, I really like Shania and I love her voice, but you are an idiot to think Alisons vocals are not up to par with Shanias. Alisons voice is amazing. Always has been, always will be.

  • you have no idea

  • they're both amazing////period....

  • That's why Alison has won so many awards, cause no one notices her.

  • whas this maybe some kind of show for Dolly Parton - as she would desirve it:)) ..to also hear others sing for here..

  • i think shania has a lovely voice when she sings country music and not cross over country pop songs.Although her songs are fantastic i think her voice is much better when stuck to honest country...dolly will always have the best version as only she can truly feel the lyrics she wrote

  • just harmony unmatched alison Cheers!!

  • I love this performance! me too~~

    I love her ^^

  • I think it speaks volumes about the Class of Alison, who is only interested in the quality 'end product', which proves to be Awesome-

What a couple of Great Talents - there to honor another great talent - Nicely done!

  • I really like the song but feel that Alison's skill and perfect voice isn't used properly as a back up singer like that.. More space for Alison!

  • Shania and Allison make great music together!!!!

  • I love this performance!

  • Is this from the Dolly Parton tribute they had last year? Where Jessica Simpson did 9 to 5?

  • Shania's voice is great...but has a strage quality to it...it sounds like some sort of instrument?! maybe its just the vid quality

  • Shania- Could you do less with this song?? Dull

Dolly's the only one who should be singing it.
