The cat shown here obviously DID NOT manage to "close its mouth on" any "column of fluid" - the tongue keeps brushing against the lower jaw that cuts off any "column of fluid" so that none of the column actually gets into the mouth at all.
Cats r very inefficient drinkers just look at how long yr house cat take to drink a very shallow dish of water. The scientists involved simply did not properly observe the slo-mo drinking to notice none of their preconceived process actually occurred.
