  • The gaida (also spelled gajda) is a bagpipe from South Eastern Europe (the Balkans). It originates from the territory of present-day Bulgaria, Northern Greece and European Turkey and was first used by Thracian tribes. Variations of this instrument are found throughout the Balkans in Albania, Bosnia, Croatia, Greece, Republic of Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, and Turkey. The uilleann pipes originally known as the Union pipes, are the characteristic national bagpipe of Ireland.

  • @hippybythesea i would like to see Spartacus (the thracian enslaved gladiator) dance beside an bagpipe :D

  • he say belgrad city lol

  • yeeey that's coooool!

  • with love from Russia

  • LOL. They say the Belle of Belgrade City instead of Belfast CIty,

  • Glad to hear they're coming to the US next year. Hopefully they'll include the East Coast on the tour.

  • i like this and the part of belgrade city !! well done lads !!!

  • OK, I really don't know where is their fascination with Ireland coming from...beside the great music, and some weird similarity with our ethno music. I'm not music expert...but long ago already...I found out that there is strange kind of similarity with Irish, and, what is even more fascinating to me...with Jewish Klatzmar (spelling?) music and our traditional music.

  • @sasha64 Belgrade's Fortress was built and originally owned by the Celts, until it was sanctioned by the Romans. That's where it comes from.

  • @sasha64 Celts spread all over central Europe (they were originally from the Alps) including the former Yugoslavia, Lombardy, France & northern Spain. Spanish music from that area (Asturias, Galicia & Cantabria) features bagpipes (gaitas) & many of the melodies & instrumentation are similar to what most people associate with the British Isles. (traditional Asturias folk dance is a cross between a Highland fling & a flamenco.) Small world.

  • @mmedefarge

I know about Celts history here, and yes Sinidun was the first name of the Belgrade...but the thing with bagpipes is interesting...Gaitas?:) We called them Gajde:)). I wander how you call whistle, because it's I think the most common folk instrument in Serbia. We call it Frula, you can check for example Bora Dugic and for Slobodan Trkulja, Celtic connections concert:). Small world indeed. Thanks.

  • @sasha64 I wouldn't be surprised if the word for bagpipe in both Spanish & Serbian is actually a derivative of the Celt word for it. It's such an unusual instrument & is not played elsewhere in Spain. I don't know Asturianu or even Spanish so I don't know the Asturianu word for whistle or flute. In Spanish it's flauta, similar to Italian. I like the Orthodox Celts version of the Irish music better than most Irish groups; it just has more muscle. But I will check out that concert. Thanks.

  • @sasha64 We never had gajde as our serbian or slavic traditional instument so the name gajde is derived from the word gaitas.

The name frula is not of serbian origin, it is of latin, romanian or valahian origin.

Serbs really dont have any conections to Celts exept that both are indoeuropean people thus other than semits and turks. Celts maybe were on the Balkans but long before Serbs even inhabited the Balkans. Cheers!

  • @G6600

They lived here, so that is a connection. I'm not saying we have their blood or they are our ancestors...I think that even musically there is some kind of connection, I can't explain...but as I said Irish music and our traditional music + jewish klatzmer music there is some kind of similarity...

Maybe the words gajde and frula are not of our origin..but they are surely used, especially frula in our traditional music.

  • @sasha64 That's true, we have some similarities in our folklor dances. But the whole Europe and all indoeuropeans had such dances and music only the new modern countries lost its folklore and we still keep it alive. If you see "gluvo glamočko kolo" you could say that we have similarities with native indians of America. Frula is an vlahian instrument and Serbs melted a lot mit them and their culture so we have frula today as our national instrument. But its true all you said! Cheers

  • @G6600 Debatable, but well said.

  • @sasha64 THey were inspired by The Pogues, who are kings of celtic punk

  • @sasha64 Through History the Celts played a role in Serbian Culture and Greek Culture but not for a long time. The Jews were always involved for thousands of years.

  • @sasha64 Let me ask you, who did our ancestors ram into when they came to Balkans?

  • @aleksa73

    And what is your point?

  • I don't give a damn if these folks are from Tierra del Fuego-They have a fantastic, haunting sound. They have captured the true Celtic sound. I'd pay to see them, If they come over to the U.S.A.

  • just after discovering this band their brilliant, hope they do come to ireland.

great to know irish music is being promoted in unlikly places like belgrade!

  • She is handsome, she is pretty,

She is the Belle of Belgrade city

  • I noticed that in the chorus they say the Belle of Bellegrad city instead of Belfast. Is this a unique serbian twist to the song?

  • @AndrewAdamsthe1st She is the Belle of Belgrade city :) It's Serbian capital.

  • I see. Because I heard the same song sung by Gaelic Storm and they sang "she is handsome she is pretty she is the bell of Belfast city" Though Both versions sound great and Belgrade fits into the song surprisingly well

  • @AndrewAdamsthe1st Sure..

    Enjoy the good music :)

  • Out she comes as white as snow, Rrings on her fingers, bells on her toes Ould Johnny Morrissey says she'll die If she doesn't get the fella with the roving eye Let the wind and the rain and the hail blow high And the snow come travellin' through the sky She's as sweet as apple pie, She'll get her own lad by and by When she gets a lad of her own She won't tell her ma when she gets home Let them all come as they will For it's Albert Mooney she loves still

  • I recently met Aca (the singer), and the news is that they're going to US next year, and that they're planning to tour Ireland...now that we're on the white list. They have never been to Ireland, he told me so. And yes, Ana is not playing anymore...as far as I understood...she wanted to come back, but the baby is the problem, and the guy who's been playing as her replacement is doing a marvelous job

  • @sasha64 Do you know where in the US?

  • No, not really...We talked about only for five minutes...we used to work together.

The boys won't leave the girls alone,

They pulled my hair and stole my comb,

She is handsome, she is pretty

She is the belle of Belfast city,

She is courting, one two three

Please won't you tell me who is she?

  • But I think they sing Belgrade city instead of Belfast.

  • well litle artist freedom

  • Of course. They sing in Belgrade mostly after all :)

  • That is common to interject such things into Irish music

  • Like much of Europe, Serbia was settled in the 3rd century BC by the Celts, but was later conquered by the Romans and became part of their military frontier.

  • yeah, but the romans did a lot for our society

  • It was actually the Greeks the Romans did not invent anything they just spread it due to conquest.

  • Yeah, such as aqueducts, roads & the mortar which allowed them to be such prolific builders, hot baths, running water & central heating.

  • Prize for best sideburns.
