From time to time we are blessed with gifts that touch the heart and soul. Laura Nyro was such a gift. Not to be mourned but exalted for the time she was in our presence and the eternity in which her song and spirit will survive.
There is also a live version of Map to the Treasure by Laura Nyro recorded 6,20,1970 at the fillmore that is mindblowing in it's vocal and piano perfection. Go to Wolfgang's Vault and search for Laura Nyro concerts. Believe me it's worth it. I think the June show is better than the one they chose to release for Spread your wings and Fly, but the both have tremendous merit.
One of the most amazing things, about this song, and I saw her do it live, is how fast she can play the piano...how she builds it in this song....how good she really was as a pianist.........she isn't recognized enough for that, imho....not the speed, just how well she could play it....she started at 5, her dad was piano tuner...and man it shows...god I miss her so much....so very much...
Ratchetchan, thanks. The opening two refrains (:11 – 1:56 and the coda refrain (6:32 – 7:59) are an example of the finest blues music ever composed. Laura’s live version on the Spread Your Wings And Fly concert is on par. How Laura could build to a crescendo! (2:33 – 3:49) Loved the way Laura used Alice Coltrane's harp to punctuate the changes and transitions
billyguns2, Geffen said of the period you commented upon, that before a live audience "She was spellbinding." Kort Soul Picnic p. 84
The use of Naomi Watts impassioned photo......Showing up on so many Nyro songs,......at this music source. Okay....I guess but why not of our lady herself? I`m sure Naomi wouldn`t mind. But there are more exact comparisons aren`t there?
Gone to soon but thankful for what she left us. A total genius in every way an it amazes me how many people had not ever heard of her. Like Joni she a had small select following and I count myself fortunate to have been one of those. Can you imagine the untapped talent in that Woman had she lived. Thankfully we knew her through her music at all. My belief is that she is still making music, somewhere.
Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing this memorable track from one of the greatest albums ever conceived! Laura Nyro was one of the giants of the 20th Century and was taken from us far too soon. I wore out this album when it first came out, and I will always remember her almost crazed, hypnotic live performance at Cincinnati, Ohio in the early 70s; an unknown John Denver was her warm-up act!
@billyguns2 I was there. It was probably the best concert I've ever seen, and at my age I've seen alot. If you don't have the album Spread Your Wngs and Fly, it's the same tour about 2 mos later at the Fillmore East.
@MyLaura33 I was at that concert!! It was more like a blizzard. We drove my '64 Chevy Nova up I84 and the snow was packed. But, we obviously made it. What a beautiful concert. Just Laura and her piano. I'll never forget it. BTW, I have all her albums and have loved her since the 70's.
thank you Ratch. such an important piece of music - cutting across all styles until finally, style doesn't exist, only the breath of the breathless human. could anybody breath during that piano part in the center?
I have the vinyl & i treasure it

I saw her at the Bushnell Memorial in Hartford CT. on a snowy night in the 70's.
I was suppose to meet a friend, more than a friend. She didn't come because of the weather.
Laura came out in a long black dress, sat at the piano, and took us all away.
I left the theater early enough to get out to her bus as she came to it.
I was so scared.
All I could say was....Hi.
In her knowing, all wise way, Hi back was all we ever shared, but we knew each other.
