The goal went off Wambach. It was an own goal. Watch how the ball changes direction midway from Sawa to the goal. It nicked Wambach. I will give Sawa credit -- the USA defense did not expect her to do that little flick. However, if Wambach hadn't gotten in the way and the ball went on the trajectory Sawa sent it, Solo would've 100% stopped it. It was really some bad luck for USA.
@msbunnypaws Yup, people still fail to realize it was an own goal. Hope Solo had the ball in her sight the moment Sawa kicked it, but at the very last moment, it changes direction. Hope had no chance, and she shouldn't get blamed at all. Unless you have cat like reflexes, I don't know any goalie who would've saved a shot in which the trajectory changed that fast and that close to the goal. It was so unfortunate.
I'm still watching highlights of this great game. I can't help but respect the effort the Japanese women gave, especially because they were getting outplayed. Let's be frank, the USA women controlled most of this game. With a little luck, the game could have been 3-0 early and, essentially, over for Japan. That's how one-sided this game was. But we don't count what-ifs and Japan gutted out this win. It still stings to have lost this game, but great game, Japan. You earned your World Cup.
The goal was planed when during breaking time with Sawa between the girl who through away bowl .I watched Japanese channel and saw the sean which was made breaf conversasion with three of Japanese players during 15 seconds . It was not accident . I also saw the Sawa's training sean . She kicked same kick at training .
I was skeptical of women's football in general before watching the 2011 WC, I thought it would be dull and slow because of the lack of athletic ability in comparison. In all honesty though, what they lacked in athleticism they made up for in technical ability and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole world cup, especially the final. One of the better football games i've seen ever, and thats counting games by men.
Sawa didn't score the goal...it actually came off of Abby's right hand (and she knew, per her reaction when it goes in, which is why Hope couldn't save it. The ball got redirected...watch again to see what I mean.
for everyone who says hope solo could stop this goal. sawa had do exactly the same goal a few time before against hope solo in the wpa. and solo can't stop it.
@germanboy3097 yeah :( i think solo couldve stopped it if it hadnt hit abby's arm :( oh well props to japan hahaha thats a sickass one touch goal haha
The stars just aligned for Japan here. 1 of their goals came from a defensive brain cramp from a harmless ball into the 18 & the other came from a "this may work 1 time out of 20 in training as a joke" but worked when tried ONCE in a World. Cup. Final. Not only the freakish nature of the Sawa goal- Solo had the original shot covered, it took a pinball deflection off Wambach to actually get it in! Proves the quality of the US where an opponent gets that much good fortune & they STILL need PKs.
OMG it was the most emoting soccer match I've ever watched. I was so happy to see Alex Morgan scoring, and I was so happy to see Japanese scoring and finally winning. They held on and won. It was so beautiful sport, definitely better sport than man soccer. Thank you so much girls ! I wish I could see another match like that again in my life.
Yes, an amazing goal. Sawa made a couple of appearances on Japanese TV showing the "side direction," but of course much harder in an actual game. Goal the more amazing because Weinbach was right with her - no fault of the opposition. Miyama deserves a lot of credit for the pinpoint CK. Obviously Japan practiced this set play, which allowed her to pull a rabbit out of the hat with three minutes to go. All in all, the best soccer gaime I have ever watched!

fuck u japan we owned u guys in war take that bitches wanna fuck with us again?? bring ur fucking bad airplane piloters we owned them and then some take it in the butt
@acebpg shut up i wanted usa to win and i feel they did a lot better than japan and that usa deserves it but japan deserves it to so you gotta shut up and let japan enjoy it because they deserve it as much as usa did
@acebpg We lost because our team is emotionally stress-out. Look at our team mates very carefully. They cannot concentrate, frustrated, and couldn't perform any team works. The Japanese had better strategy than us. Unfair? No, there's no fair games if we have a team that is GED. Congrats Japan and they earned it...--- from Oregon State.
Agreed that this was the best goal of the tournament, the sheer difficulty of the shot with a defender right on her hip. It had to be perfect and Sawa was. Thanks for this camera angle too.
@TheTarzan01 just thought i should let u know the rite way of writing plural is just men and plural for woman is women.... no hatin just trying to help...
@NaruIchiLuffy It's obvious that Tarzan is not a native speaker, so I see no reason to point that out, especially since 1) there are many more grammatical errors in the sentence besides just the plurals, and 2) there are, likewise, grammatical errors in your sentence as well.
@bloke003 it was a good goal against the sweden for kawasumi but sawa goal is not just oustanding goal but one very difficult to make,is why for me is the best goal, try to make the same goal on the position one hundred times and I bet you wont make it, then try the goal of kawasumi against the sweden hundred of times too I bet you would make a bunch of goals.Plus sawa have someone running next to her trying to block her shot, which make this goal more intresting, for me the best goal.

Did that goal deflect off Wambach or did it just fly in at a weird angle? Either way, it was an awesome goal.

@Psiros2161 With or without Wambach's assistance, it would still go in. You should watch and pause at that moment to see clearly.
