  • not better than modest mouse's dramamine BUT this is by far the best cover i've heard! :D nice and relaxing

  • I like the Beatles version better.

  • @JakobVirgil Can't tell if trolling or just very, very stupid.

  • @Ctj233 If you can't tell how does that make me very very stupid?

  • Comment removed

  • @shauno5166 I accept your opinion, but first of all, can you really say you love Mark's music after making a comment like this? Second of all, a cover is not supposed to be greater than the original, it's supposed to show an artist's appreciation of another artist's music and perhaps even turn listeners on to another artist's work. Were it not for this album, I probably wouldn't be listening to Modest Mouse today. These covers are masterpieces of musical rendition and genre transition.

  • @drewd811 ok yeah I agree with most of what you said in that comment. I still don't like the song, but I regret making the comment.

  • I love the original, but this one gives me goose bumps haha. Both are awesome.

  • I think this cover is great, although Modest Mouse is still the master of it.

  • Not as good as the original. But it is still amazing. Great cover.

  • These covers are interesting to say the least. I guess I still prefer the MM versions though...

  • Is this considered a cover or a song they "made up"?

  • @voicelessband Of course it's a cover, they have covered tons of modest mouse songs, all on this album tiny cities. It's not a secret of theirs that these are actually modest mouse songs.

  • This doesn't compare to Modest Mouse's Gold

  • @supdenfoosukka YES IT DOES

  • Sounds a lot like Jose Gonzalez. Nice job with this.

  • i mean , from how i see things , i think that modest mouse has the shittiest fan base, i mean , just look at the butthurt fuckers

  • dare to be different, i love it!

  • why are these guys covering so many Modest Mouse songs?

  • @ghostlywindblown They did an entire album of Modest Mouse covers back in 2005, called Tiny Cities. This is where the track was taken from.

  • Modest Mouse is for sure my favorite band ever but this guy is still pretty awesome and i have total respect for him

  • This song makes me way to calm to care about the haters.

  • this is exactly what a cover should be. the original happens to me my favorite song yet and i imagine these people share a similar attachment which is why they covered it.

  • @terr0kitten cheers for the lush tune :)

  • @HarryWeenerz It's a real shame your a massive wanker.

  • I leik Thiz Song

    It calms me down

  • This song sucks, stop killing good MM songs, its not creative. All thats being done is your putting boring inflection and the same guitar riff in all these shitty covers. Stop.

  • @HarryWeenerz Hey! Guess what! I don't like Modest Mouse that much! I like his covers of the songs better!

So fuck off! Let us enjoy our music and you can enjoy yours. It doesn't have to be creative if it has a certain "quality" that appeals to the listener. For me, I like soul in music. This has a soul. Music is as deep into a person as u can get.

  • @HarryWeenerz FUCK OFF TROLL im sick of you fuckers

  • this song is sweet.

  • Interesting cover. Im a giant fan of MM, but I bet they don't mind them covering them over Kids Bop

  • Totally killed this song.

    Original is wayy better.

  • 16 people are deaf

  • I actually like his versions better.

  • I definitely agree with dlower23 about how this song brings out the vocals. with the original i think i was distracted by the music and couldn't really tell from what the artist was saying and the music was great, not saying it wasnt. I love both versions and I love the style that he uses with this version.

People do covers to kinda bring out what they see in it, if you don't it like then dont waste the space on this page telling us, just listen to the original if it makes you feel better (:

  • I can't keep focused on anything...

  • i dont really like covers but this is a good one

  • Do something interesting and cover this song yourself if you can do a more interesting job of it than Mark Kozelek and co have done here on an entire album of covers devoted to a modern band that the verdict is still out on history-wise (that's why Sun Kil Moon's idea is excellent in my opinion, by the way). i think that Brock is a good song writer and these versions, at their best, actually tend to highlight the words rather better than brock does himself b/c his delivery is sort of distracting

  • it shocks me how insulted modest mouse fans are that an artist who loves their music so much, they make an album of their own interpretation of the songs out of respect for the band. you guys are ridiculous. he does it with such style. how can you possibly be offended!?

  • this is a great band, thx for the upload

  • reminds me of bonnie prince billy and gomez.

ie: F'ING AMAZING. thank you for this vid.

  • Kinda has a bit of a Little Motel feel to it. Sun Kil Moon reminds me of Iron & Wine's cover of Such Great Heights. I like both versions, btw.

  • Imitation is a form of flattery, so if sun kill moon does an entire album devoted to modest mouse, i think its easy to say they are fans of modest mouse and not trying to "steal their thunder." I like both versions of the song, although i am far to big a fan of Isaac to like SKL's version better.

  • I do like the modest mouse one more, purely because those power chords are awesome :D

Having said that, it brings a new perspective to the song, like david bowie and seu jorge.

  • I think this cover isn't half bad. I mean, I am a huge MM fan and (in my opinion) this has nothing on them. But of course in my completely biased opinion I would think that. On a whole I like the sound, much better than the last cover I just listened to by him, I think it could have done with more emotion but saying that, too much may have taken away the whole 'peace' thing this song is giving off. At any rate, a very relaxing cover!!

  • @Ginnyaw24 Acknowledging a bias and leaving an honest comment without any intent of condescending anyone or the band....I am glad there are still reasonable youtube users such as yourself.

  • I LOVE this version so much more than the one done by Modest Mouse .. xD

  • This is a good song

  • Waitttt I thought Modest Mouse did Tiny Cities? Did they cover the whole album or something? Or did Sun Kil Moon cover them? I'm confused.

  • @RobotWhaleE I encourage you to do some research on Mark Kozelek. He used to be in Red House Painters in the 90s then around 2000 did a cover of some Bon Scott era AC/DC songs that are similar to this in taking really fast songs, slowing them down, and adding his own interpretation to them. Then he formed a band called Sun Kil Moon and did a MM cover album called "Tiny Cities". He doesn't just do covers and his original material is amazing imo.

  • @wensew Hmmm I didn't know all that. Honestly, I just kinda stumbled upon Sun Kil Moon in that GOW3 trailer haha. Sounds pretty interesting, though.

  • dude i dig this

  • Ha. Zeke found this because of me ahaha. Mt little friend xD

  • Love modest mouse, Love this. Quit comparing them, theyre both great pieces of music in their OWN way. =]

  • HAVE ANY OF U EVER ACTUALLY TRIPPED ON DRAMAMINE AND LISTENED TO THIS SONG?!? ITS literally the most beautifll thing ever

  • This is an o.k. cover, but I'd still rather listen to MM.

  • This is definitely a good cover, but the feel of the original works much better due to the nature of the lyrics.

  • I love old Modest Mouse, and was reluctant to get into these guys at first. I bought this album after reading some random article about Heath Ledger, who said it was his current fav at the time. I think they put there own original spin on the songs, their sound is relaxing and pure, give them a chance, also check out their cover of The ocean breathes salty.

  • ive followed youtube video links of this "sun kil moon" covering modest mouse and i must say .... WOW

  • eh its alrite, i liek the original one better of course but this isnt that bad. at least its still kinda trippy :)

  • you do seem to be in the minority so the best I can suggest is to not bother with this, but, to go listen to the original.

  • @terr0rkitten

This song is calming, I like it. I also respect your calm and mature demeanor in dealing with haters.

  • @Zeke931 well, people can hate if they like - if they get abusive I just block and remove. It just seems some aren't adults.

  • @terr0rkitten

    Lol, I'm not an adult.

  • @Zeke931 I was thinking more mentally than physically!

  • @terr0rkitten

    owned.

  • @terr0rkitten i like modest mouse version better

  • @MalachiteR He make god covers , better than you mother when making you , well i hope you mother have teached you things well , but i can c that u din't learned well

  • @MalachiteR

that's pretty much how most covers are..

you never make the same exact music. THAT, would be lame.

And its really not that simple of a guitar riff, its original and only he would have came up with this exact guitar riff.

and yeah, anyone can write a guitar riff and sing someone else's lyrics.

but who's to say its gonna sound as good and as calming as this?

  • @MalachiteR that's really not what he did. it's the same song, but a cover. so basically the music is the same.

  • @MalachiteR personally, i didnt like this cover too. ;p

  • @MalachiteR To me it's not the complexity but how it is expressed and makes me feel that makes a good song.

  • @MalachiteR Totally agree. Second cover of MM that i've heard this band do and neither was up to snuff with the original arrangements. I just don't feel the aching anxiety in this dude's voice. It's more like a whispered whine. Not saying it's bad, just not nearly as good.

  • @KristopheTheSaint Its way more artistic than mm

  • @blackmanorigins Uh how?

  • this is so freaking amazing.

  • wow who cares, sounds great! things are getting Kotex around here too eh?

    Dan

  • i like this alot

  • your opinions are not fact, they are opinions. so "i have to tell you" that you should learn about the subject that you are talking about before you go off stating things like that. This is a great original cover of an already great song. if you don't like it you don't like it its personal opinion not a fact that needs to be stated

  • what an amazing cover. beautiful

  • sun kil moon is talented as hell, they makes their own original music thats is actually really pleasing to the eardrums. its perfectly fine to cover songs, jimi hendrix covered bob dyaln, right? so quit HATING. douche

  • hendrix made dylan better though. this song doesn't aspire to be better, just recreate it. i mean, to each his own i guess, but i think this just doesn't have any punch. now watch for the down votes

  • Aspiring to be better isn't the point.

  • I can agreed Assman. Not that I dont like this song. Its just not the power Modest Mouse has given it. Plus, ive heard a few of these covers and even though they are not, it has all the same feel. At least MM can change it up almost on every song.

  • @assman1337 Excuse me, sir. One does not make Dylan better.

  • duly noted

  • dear dude below me. mark kozelek is a very talented song writer. he did this album for fun.

  • this is there best Modest Mouse cover I think, damn good

  • if you cant stomach it please shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • It's annoying how a lot of people expect covers to be exactly like the original song. It's a cover for a reason, the dude made it how he wanted to and it sounds fine.

  • @jessesmithsmithsmith: Yeah but the baseline was the main focal point of the song. I think it would have been cool to keep the baseline but use acoustic guitars instead.

  • I guess if one likes modest mouse one may think this is worse, but i don't.

    This song: A+

  • this guy clearly missed the appeal of the original dramamine

What I love about the original is the intricate guitar opening; the song sort of flows around the hypnotizing guitar part and the vocals are second in importance.

this guy just concentrates on the vocals.

it's an alright song, just a bad cover

  • i disagree. when someone covers a song they should try to give it it's own spirit rather than just xeroxing the original. otherwise, it would just be a lamer version of the exact same song.

  • yeah, you're right with the hypnotizing guitar - it is the best thing in whole song.

  • love the cover.

    LOVE the original.

    LOVE!!!!! MODEST MOUSE!!!!

  • good cover. but its not in 3/4 like the original, which is kinda a big change but still decent.

  • brilliant. <3 sun kil moon

  • every sun kill moon's cover sounds the same, it's killing the modest mouse songs, fuck it :|

  • at first i read this and agreed, but the singer's voice is fucking lethal.

  • Not a good cover but I liked how they homaged Modest Mouse's distinctive 'ping' guitar sound at 1:01.

  • given kozelek's apparent penchant to do whatever he feels like at the time, fans are collectively lucky that sun kil moon's entire output hasn't been comprised of 30 minute songs with 1 minute of sighed out lyrics a piece. a lot of his/their music is genius, but when the whim takes them, you get... this kind of thing. i still laugh when i think of the red house painters shows i've gone to, where they would prolong songs into extended, pointless jams for 10 minutes then stop abruptly.

  • honestly i wondered who wrote this after i heard the two. as well as never ending math equation and im still not sure but it looks like this is a modest cover band.

  • Well, Sun Kil Moon have recorded an entire album of Modest Mouse covers, but their own material is far more interesting. Especially the Ghosts album - check it out!

  • well im probably a bigger modest fan then any of you, and i like it, stop yo hatin kids!

im sure issac would like it too dont worry buddy

    keep up the good work

  • Isaac probably gets a good laugh from it. Not a bigger fan than me son

  • WE all like modest mouse equally

  • This one is good, but it's really missing that distorted feeling of the original. The first version felt like a Dram trip.

  • i don't like this version

  • Well I'm a big fan of modest mouse and I like the early red house painters stuff ( mark's previous band, ) And I perfer the original much more... But this isn't half bad, Much more creative then I could ever do. Just not as good (in my opinion) as the original. but really check out early red house painters stuff if you can. "Medicine Bottle" "24" "katy Song" and such.

  • My god, it's so much shorter than the original.

  • i dont get it...does Sun Kil Moon just cover Modest Mouse songs? This cover is actually pretty good

  • not too amazing :s

  • Ew this is terrible. It took out all of the emotion of the original.

  • It's like he went to one of those Easy Listening machines, picked a "Spa" song and then added the Modest Mouse lyrics to it.

  • YES SIR!

  • I agree, it seems to me that these versions of the old songs seem to take the "dirty" aspect out of it. Sort of like they are trying to make the song but modernizing it.

  • I don't really care for these versions good job though

  • i heard only fifteen seconds; & i knew this is a really good cover.

  • this is such a nice song.

  • Although, I can't say I like this version half as much as the original . . . the lyrics still give me chills.

  • Bloody good is all I can say, does it for me and as such I am done...

  • sounds like jose gonzalez if you know what i mean

  • yeah I know what you mean...

jose gonzalez's voice is still probably a little more monotonous

    i really like him.

    and i love MM

  • Wow, this is a really good cover...

I heard the cover for "Never Ending Math Equation" and I didn't like it as much as the MM version, but this one is great!

and, jeez, so much hate on here...

  • Oh, and PS. This song is amazing. Vocals sound like Andrew Bird. This isn't a contest, so I won't state who I like better. You know? Grown up shit.

  • You nerds need to settle the fuck down. Music is music. He's not taking or trying to take anything away from Modest Mouse and in all respects is honoring them by covering one of their songs, being the reason why most people cover songs. Dry your tears and go find something worthwhile to bitch about.

  • i picked up this cd because i liked the cover, i listened to one song and was surprised to hear isaacs lyrics... then i got sad how boring it was... then i got really sad that there were 11 more covers of modest mouse songs on the cd...

  • Well... when you buy a tribute album consisting of nothing but covers of Modest Mouse songs, you should expect, you know, Modest Mouse songs. I, personally, am not a real fan of Modest Mouse. I find Mark Kozelek's interpretations of their songs to be vastly superior. The lyrics, when they aren't being drowned out by MM's music, and when they're aren't being sung by MM's singer, stand out quite well, actually. I would never have known that MM had a mildly interesting lyricist if not for this.

  • I agree, the song is MM's, but I like this interpertation. People need to stop obscessing about 'origin' a bit. . .

  • i think it takes what isaac implied away by singing them in the boring way this is....

but whatever... to each his owwnnn

  • this is horrible, there can only be on highlander and/or Modest Mouse!

  • Woah! Bonnie prince billy will be doing guest vocals on the new sun kil moon album

  • Ha, I'm a heretic, I like this better.

  • I prefer Modest's mouses version way more, but this is nice

  • someone shoud post a vid of the title track, it's fantastic!

  • Ninja likey, like... Thanks.
