If this guy thinks that a tent alone would be warmer than a tarp he is insane. None of them have any insulating value. The best thing would be to make a debris shelter. 4 feet of compressed debris and you can sleep naked in there!
thanks for the tips, I wanted to camp with a tarp, but ended up getting a tent tho even in the summer I didn't want to use just a tarp. I think it's the spot I was at by the river there are just too many bugs and what not copper heads also. The spot I was at had no dry or dead wood. I could have went and got some but I think on shelter situation I am gonna start easy and go tough
good video, It takes alot of endurance to stay out in a situation like that, staged or not!!! Im sure most of the people complaining about your tactics have never spent any real time in the wilderness epically a night like that!
Seems that you didn't make much effort keeping your fire well feuled during the night. Was that on purpose? You could have kept warmer by increasing the size of your fire at the 2 am filming and the ice would not have put it out.
great vid man i been stuck on top of the black mountains in winter and it was tough i was using a tarp set up and they rock i love them, takes a little practice but i would always choose a tarp over a tent! nice trick puttin ur jumper down the bottom of the bivi bag il do that next time

This is my favorite 'wildernessoutfitters' video. It's valuable to see how much tenacity it takes to practice your skills. Anybody can camp in ideal weather with modern equipment. You've undoubtedly inspired a lot of your subscribers to challenge themselves in extreme weather with a minimal shelter. You've also shown that even with fire and shelter defying mother nature is not a night at the Marriott.
a piss bottle is a must on a cold night. you already have enough trouble sleeping. having to get out of your bag, slip on some frozen boots and trudge away from camp freakin' sucks. a gallon ziploc bag works for you minimalists out there.
Spent a freak night on Bob's Bald in the GSMNP when the weather hit -24 F. Was with one other guy and my Malinois and his Huskey. My bag was rated at -10 and we had a decent tent. Brought the dogs in and my Malinois tolerated wearing an A16 bomber hat all night. Damn that was cold. My mistake was not rigging up more protection than a foam pad from the ground.
The reason the infrared didn't work is because the camera wasn't in infrared mode. The benefit of infrared light is minimal in normal mode. Perhaps your camera doesn't have infrared or night vision mode?
Before going to bed in the winter I like to boil some water to fill up a water bottle. Then I put that between my legs and it keeps me warm all night. Try to put one or two in your bag 10 or so mins before you go to bed and it will warm your bag up for you before you get in as well.
Awesome video. I do have to agree that you seemed somewhat cold, but who wouldn't - your sleeping in the open air in freezing temps. I've tried this one time with a decent bag, but no tent, just a lean two and I woke up so cold I thought I was going to die. Big difference not being in a tent.
Interesting points from both sides here, i have to go with dave on this one, tarps are great for emergency shelters and have worked wonders for me in the past. When posted to J'bad we only carried tarps in four man teams whilst on mountain operations north of the FMB used properly our bivvys kept us warm and cozy whilst on stag for up to four days at a time. Just got to know the little tricks for getting maximun effect out of em. But michaelsolo i take your point also, got a tent...use it.
Thank you for explaining. I was concerned that I would experience more problems than you did that night. I am trying to build an extended stay pack and keep weight below 50lbs. 40lbs is my goal. I hope to have it ready by the end of this week.

For all you bug out survivalist watching this....... See you will fail with your pocho/tarp RAMBO set up. After a week you be traveling back to FEMA camps. Get a low profile tent, they are very light now. Look, Look at this and remember. This is the first sleet/snow on Ohio and professional instructors are have a tough time at this type of camping.
I have to disagree very strongly with everything you are saying, A Tarp is a Great 1 Noght emergency shelter, this happened to be a very very bad night, but a morepermanent structure of debris should be built the following day and the tarp is great for waterproofing your structure.

This is the results of tarp failure. Multiple days of this looks like fun. Or maybe surviving in your back yard is dangerous. No ground protection, so I guess you have to stay up COLD, COLD, until daylight. Right now a proper light weigh tent, and great sleeping bag, sleeping pad on a tent floor is awsome for the PREPARED SURVIVALIST.
This Tarp ABSOLUTLEY Did NOT Fail it was good and dry underneath of over 1" of sleet and Ice. The failure was in the planning of the shelter for this exteme weather.
I Disagree with you completely on this a Moisture barrier on the ground would have been nice but I was not Cold or Wet and The Next day would have been the time to build a debris type shelter using the Tarp for waterproofing. But a Tarp can keep you dry in an emergency and this one did just that.
NY is pretty similar to Ohio, actually i think it's a little worse in the summer. i went there this past summer and might i say... prettiest girls ever! i'm 17 not much money to spend of a 300 dollar tent. i want to camp in the winter what do you suggest? tarp? with some windblocker and and maybe double tent set up?
@wildernessoutfitters He also doesnt seem to take other things into account. Like if he was in the tent the fire would not of been able to be so close so you would of been colder. The tarp kept the rain off you which is what the tent would do, and as far as for the moisture barrier on the ground, yeah of course it would be nice, but with a tent its hard to get a good amount of natural insulation to lie properly. For an overnight shelter it worked great for the intended purpose. Good work dave.
@Michaelsolo you do forget if your in a survival situation you might not have anything on your person so really you arnt allways prepared thats why you practice your survival skills so if this does happen and you have nothing but the clothes on your back your ready for what ever is thrown at you
Holly Sh*t man!! Thats amazing your not cold. What your wearing is probably keeping you alive! When i went out into the bush it was early summer and i was still cold at night with my two layers.
i wondered if Dave could tell me if they were or not... he'd kinda know better than you. no sweat, just saying. and yes i know of the quality of Danner boots i've just never owned a pair myself. theres a pair in the latest Cabela's cat that i drool over but i'm not a position to be able to safely spend $250.00 on a new pair of boots.
COLD FEET? Easy, heat up some small rocks beside your fire and drop them in the bottom of your sleeping bag when you are ready to go to bed. Cover them with an old t-shirt so you don't burn your sleeping bag if their too hot.
Do the same with a bigger rock to keep your upper body hot and you'll will never go in the woods or camping without heating up a few rocks for the night.
I like winter camp, but I can do with out the ice storms. Not much on lean-tos either. I'm a tent and tarp kinda guy. I think the best smell in the world, is coffee and bacon cooking on a pine fire, at winter camp.
when i winter camp, there are usually 3 of us, and we take shifts on the fire.
we never go for under a week, after the second day. we pretty much have a full blown shelter, basicaly 3 lean to's buildt in a triangle, partially roofed in, floored and walled in pine, walled with snow, door etc.
we don't worry about the shelter lighting on fire, the ceiling might get a touch warm, but we only need an 8- 12 inch high fire.
i find that if you put your gloves on your feet to that works well if nothing else. then you can keep your hands and that warm by bringing them inside your shirt and have direct contact with the body.
damn Dave...lol You looked and sounded like one truly miserable individual that night!! Not sure if you had some sinus stuff goin on or not, but damn...lol.
my buddy and i were out camping 2 weeks ago, out by a lake and at about 5 am the loons were going strong.they sure sound pretty after day break but before that..... now i know why they are protected!!! :)
That wetness truly did look miserable, but temperature-wise, it can't have been all that cold. It often gets down to minus 30 to 40 celcius where I live, and we still winter camp. But Kudos to you either way - wet and minus 5 (celsius) is just as cold-feeling as minus 30 and dry.
oh, and it's not that bad to have water over the top of your water bottle. I've had a 3 litre bladder frozen like a brick, just from overnight. It works great to keep your water bottle upside down, so that if only part of it freezes, it stays open where you want to drink out of.
I haven't got my own video camera, which makes it rather difficult to shoot videos, as I'm sure you can understand. Also, having only joined YouTube in April, I haven't exactly had the opportunity, even if I had a video camera. So thank you very much, but you can keep your bullshit comments to yourself. Have a nice day.
another great video Dave watched it a while back forgot to comment on . Even though it was miserable weather I bet your itching for another winter trip. Take care.
i meet you at bill goodmans gun and knife show we talked about the new k-bar (bk/2) i would like to see you put it through a test . by the way this video kicks butt. suggestion i always carry a 3x3 sheet of tin foil great for pot making or signaling. you can install over the fire to keep the rain off. keep up the good work . big foot
Well respect for sure, these are harsh conditions. His moral is really great, most people would be frozen in the morning at least. Oh yeah, the infra red didn't work :)
Excellent vid, looked like a tough night but worth it to lie there listening to the sounds of the forest in the morning! This is definatley best series yet in my opinion, so much better than grimbo's rubbish!
Shouldnt really build your fire under your tarp unless your tarp is about 10 feet up. Normally build it outside with a reflector behind hid it to bounce the heat back to you. A pile of logs or rocks will do. Dont build the fire with it blowing at you because a. you'll get smoke and b. your tarp will catch the wind.
Haha, yes but even when it starts raining or snowing you don't want the fire to go out. Problem is there are few ways of doing this, probably the reason cavemen lived inside a cave. You could start the fire under a high tree (with no branches near the bottom), two problems here: 1 the tree can catch fire by heating up or if the fire gets to high. 2 if it rains hard raindrops go through the tree. You could start the fire in a cave (that is if there is a cave..)
,one major problem here could be ventilation with the wind and such. So there's little to nothing to protect your fire. If you put something above it it could dry out fast, the only solution i can think of is two/four metal sticks and a small metal plate on top (maybe the reflector pushed over, but think about the weight that would be if it's metal.
Dave a tip I use for winter camping is to fill my 1 litre nato water bottle with hot water, stuff it down the end of my sleeping bag. It will keep your feet warm all night and you have warm water for the morning. Also stops the cmaera batteries from freezing. I have used this at -10c in a hammock and was warm all night..
Absolutly right Sean, I use my fleece for this but a plastic water bottle will work as well for sure. I really was not cold enough to be uncomfortablle that night just anoid by the Ice breaking trees all night.
KEEP YOUR EARS OPEN!!!! ....idk where youre at but around here the few black bears and wild dogs that wonder through are alot more hungry at these times of year..
I always enjoy your vids buddy. Thanks. It was fairly dark in some areas -- I thought some of those kids from the Blair Witch Project were going to pop in on you :-)
My definition of miserable is 40 degrees and wet but 20 degrees and dry is my idea of camping fun. GREAT TIP on putting something down by your feet because if anything will get cold it will be your lower back, hands, and feet. Putting long wool socks over your hands at night will keep them warm if they get exposed at night
Yep Dave, I've had health issues again unfortunately. I will try to get back more often though. I got a kick out of your comment to Sean, because I have been out a couple of times in heavy ice and snowfall and the sound of the trees cracking was like rifle shots going off. Dead silence due to the snow muffling all sounds-- and then CRACK !!! I found myself praying for the trees I was underneath. :-)
I like how you didn't edit out the "mistake" with the snare and it's not one of those pretty versions of survival like you might see on tv. You looked awful in the middle of the night, but kept a good attitude and sounded like you weren't having too bad of a time. Did you have an idea of the weather report beforehand?
Very interesting. That much ice is going to be hard on the deer, they won't be able to get down to their food source. Hopefully it won't stay long. Wonderful video. I love camping in the winter here and listening to what happens when the weather changes like that. Thanks for sharing.
i have a snugpak 9 hawk and a fleece liner, thats roughly 8 degrees warmer than your setup, Dave, but i wouldnt like to test it for the first time outside of my own garden. not at those temps. :) ever thought about putting hot (not too hot!) stones with you into the sleeping bag?
hey dave love ur videos, i live in columbus but do alot of my treking in southern ohio were my grandparents live (around the galipolice area.) some storm eh ? ha ha
Respects Dave! Cold weather camping like that is when you really find out what works and what doesn't both in gear and shelters. I have a cold weather setup that needs to be tested, and I hope to get out soon! Love ya man, keep up the good work!
Having camped through the beginning of the big ice storm of '98 I know what you went through. We received 18 inches of snow today alone, on top of the 3 feet we already have. Ohio must receive a lot less snow than we do. Why did you not use the Kifaru design tent w/ the stove? Would love to see that one. Kind of curious though, $600.00 for a tent w/ no floor? Not useful where I live. Great video though. Excellent job!
Dave is that the Pathfinder tarp. All that ice stacked up how did it do? If you have any photos or video of all that ice on it it would halp me decide to buy it.
Once again nice video dave, I had just thought of the book My side of the mountain and when sam sleeps through the ice storm the author described how the trees seemed to EXPLODE and I just thought of your video, and how you said the branches seemed to EXPLODE seems like a weird sensation! what do you think of it?
It was not as much explosion sounding as crashing alot of time I could not tell wheather it was a deer running and crashinh ice or if branches were breaking and falling but the later it got the more it happened. It was very weird. I have never experienced anything like that. I kept waiting for a deer to run right into my Tarp Lines.
If you use a metal water bottle you can heat them by the fire at night and then shove it into your bivy bag beside your feet. Use it like a hot water bottle. I carry two bottles and use one at my feet and the other near my chest. You can also exchange them with the fire if you want to get a burst of warmth. Slept two weeks in the Army NG during winter camp that way in northern MN. Still got a little chilly at night though. (not sure how cold it got at night) Day temps were14F. Great video!
looks like a great time, I went out a few weeks back, and tried filming my winter camping but my camera wouldnt work. it was just too cold, then tried to warm it up inside my jacket but it just fogged up. Maybe Snugpak can make a camera for us outdoor guys. thanks dave.
i applaud your endurance! must have been a real ball ache having the rain on the tarp keeping you awake though. that ice was insane! i've never seen anything like that here in the uk but out winters have got pretty mild where i live. great stuff keep it up
i didn't even think of that, must have been kinda worrying too that summat big might fall on you? unless you thought of it before and picked a pretty safe spot to make camp
hey, dave! here's something I learned about footwear. i hang my boots upside down on a couple of sticks shoved into the ground and they stay dry and free of the creepy-crawlies. great video, as always.
Nice video. Thanks a lot! Just an idea: Perhaps you could heat up some water in your bottle and use it as a hot water bottle in your sleeping bag. The bottle is made of metal, isn´t it? And while you are sleeping you could heat up your small Nalgene bottle from your kit in the bean tin and switch the bottles whenever you wake up. Or as an alternative you could put the bottles with hot water in your boots and speed up the drying process.
Glad to hear that. Snugpak has really good stuff. Got myself a Snugpak Softie Merlin 3 about 9 years ago. It´s a little bit lighter/smaller than your Elite 1, but it´s really no fun with it below zero. Their insulated jackets are quite good as well. I have have the Sleeka and can really recommend it. Perhaps not as warm as down, but it´s not a problem when it gets wet. And they are cheaper than down also... Looking forward to more videos from you.
Another great video Dave and I have to say you must have done a great job puttin that tarp up because over by me (about 30 miles to your west) we had a good 1/2 inch of ice on everything at 7 this morning and since then it's just been snowin' like crazy you can hear all the tree limbs breakin' in the woods by me.

we never go for under a week, after the second day. we pretty much have a full blown shelter, basicaly 3 lean to's buildt in a triangle, partially roofed in, floored and walled in pine, walled with snow, door etc.
we don't worry about the shelter lighting on fire, the ceiling might get a touch warm, but we only need an 8- 12 inch high fire.

i find that if you put your gloves on your feet to that works well if nothing else. then you can keep your hands and that warm by bringing them inside your shirt and have direct contact with the body.

BackFortyBushcraft 2 years ago
oh, and it's not that bad to have water over the top of your water bottle. I've had a 3 litre bladder frozen like a brick, just from overnight. It works great to keep your water bottle upside down, so that if only part of it freezes, it stays open where you want to drink out of.
BackFortyBushcraft 2 years ago
edit* I meant ice over the top of the water bottle, not water.

Excellent vid, looked like a tough night but worth it to lie there listening to the sounds of the forest in the morning! This is definatley best series yet in my opinion, so much better than grimbo's rubbish!
funnystoat 3 years ago
Great vid. When you make a fire is it covered by the roof of your tarp or just outside of it? Does the smoke tend to blow back in on you much?
Cheers.
interlinga 3 years ago
Shouldnt really build your fire under your tarp unless your tarp is about 10 feet up. Normally build it outside with a reflector behind hid it to bounce the heat back to you. A pile of logs or rocks will do. Dont build the fire with it blowing at you because a. you'll get smoke and b. your tarp will catch the wind.
nickynwong 3 years ago
Cheers
interlinga 3 years ago
Haha, yes but even when it starts raining or snowing you don't want the fire to go out. Problem is there are few ways of doing this, probably the reason cavemen lived inside a cave. You could start the fire under a high tree (with no branches near the bottom), two problems here: 1 the tree can catch fire by heating up or if the fire gets to high. 2 if it rains hard raindrops go through the tree. You could start the fire in a cave (that is if there is a cave..)
abdula31 3 years ago
,one major problem here could be ventilation with the wind and such.

I have used this at -10c in a hammock and was warm all night..
seanmulhall 3 years ago
Thanks sean??!!
like the quote!
wall2rockclimber 3 years ago
Absolutly right Sean, I use my fleece for this but a plastic water bottle will work as well for sure. I really was not cold enough to be uncomfortablle that night just anoid by the Ice breaking trees all night.

Rivieratime 3 years ago
Great to have you back my friend! Hope all is well with you.
wildernessoutfitters 3 years ago
Yep Dave, I've had health issues again unfortunately. I will try to get back more often though. I got a kick out of your comment to Sean, because I have been out a couple of times in heavy ice and snowfall and the sound of the trees cracking was like rifle shots going off. Dead silence due to the snow muffling all sounds-- and then CRACK !!! I found myself praying for the trees I was underneath. :-)
Keep up your great work !!

Looks like u had a horrible night Dave! You don't have waterproof boots?
Looks like that tarp was about to cave in on you. I hope it did'nt. Why did'nt you keep your fire going?
willglo 3 years ago
I like how you didn't edit out the "mistake" with the snare and it's not one of those pretty versions of survival like you might see on tv. You looked awful in the middle of the night, but kept a good attitude and sounded like you weren't having too bad of a time. Did you have an idea of the weather report beforehand?

Very interesting. That much ice is going to be hard on the deer, they won't be able to get down to their food source. Hopefully it won't stay long. Wonderful video. I love camping in the winter here and listening to what happens when the weather changes like that. Thanks for sharing.

oPeNpLAiNs 3 years ago
Having camped through the beginning of the big ice storm of '98 I know what you went through. We received 18 inches of snow today alone, on top of the 3 feet we already have. Ohio must receive a lot less snow than we do. Why did you not use the Kifaru design tent w/ the stove? Would love to see that one. Kind of curious though, $600.00 for a tent w/ no floor? Not useful where I live. Great video though. Excellent job!

wildernessoutfitters 3 years ago
Once again nice video dave, I had just thought of the book My side of the mountain and when sam sleeps through the ice storm the author described how the trees seemed to EXPLODE and I just thought of your video, and how you said the branches seemed to EXPLODE seems like a weird sensation! what do you think of it?
Mattrocks1231 3 years ago

Maybe Snugpak can make a camera for us outdoor guys. thanks dave.

good vid so how often do you go out in a blizzard?
Caveman0713 3 years ago
We dont have but 1 good snow a year usually here so, not often.
wildernessoutfitters 3 years ago
Or as an alternative you could put the bottles with hot water in your boots and speed up the drying process.
cukaemmer 3 years ago
Both good ideas! I really didnt get cold the sleet hitting the tarp kept me awake more thasn anything else.
wildernessoutfitters 3 years ago
Glad to hear that. Snugpak has really good stuff. Got myself a Snugpak Softie Merlin 3 about 9 years ago. It´s a little bit lighter/smaller than your Elite 1, but it´s really no fun with it below zero. Their insulated jackets are quite good as well. I have have the Sleeka and can really recommend it. Perhaps not as warm as down, but it´s not a problem when it gets wet. And they are cheaper than down also... Looking forward to more videos from you.

survivalexpert93 3 years ago
Another great video Dave and I have to say you must have done a great job puttin that tarp up because over by me (about 30 miles to your west) we had a good 1/2 inch of ice on everything at 7 this morning and since then it's just been snowin' like crazy you can hear all the tree limbs breakin' in the woods by me.
