@Telephoneinstyrofoam it looks like your standard Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. Its one of the most popular and cheapest tube amps around. I generally hate them and think they sound horrible, but it sounds amazing in this video. Just goes to show you its in the fingers....
I have an amazing scale exercise/warm-up that I got from Ben Monder. You can find it at my free blog, Advancing Guitar, in my lesson titled, "Kung Fu, Ben Monder and the Best Scale Warm-Up...Ever!"
@amjan No, if you listened to them both more you would realize they are indeed very different from each other. I studied with Tim and they are not alike. Both have a modern style that is unique to themselves.
@jeffreyburr Ha! I know what you mean. Have you tried playing Mistral? I don't think my index finger will ever recover from doing an extended diagonal barre.
I agree, his use of chords is very Holdsworth, but the single line solo parts are unique, and in a VERY good way. At 4:19 I swear he plays a Gabor Szabo lick.
does ibanez make high end jazz boxes like ben is playing that are not signature models? that are brand new? ive seen those two on there website that are around the 800 range is that it? and yes i know that the price doesnt make the guitar.
Ben uses an Ibanez AS50 from the 80s. The more recent models are somewhat similar, but use much cheaper materials hence the low price. They are actually not bad considering the price, but necks have some issues with sharp edges. I use one every so often for gigs when I don't want to bring out my ES-335.
just because i say i dont like them doesnt mean im saying there not good guitars. well the cheap ones are not that great, thats kind of a given with any brand of guitars in the 300 dollar range. but not all. there have i pleased the ibanez owners hahaha.
Ben is Truly a talented musician, which is an understatement at that. Sheer brilliance, this puts me in a good mood. This is underrated, it deserves more attention.
Ben said he bought a "good" guitar, a Gibson 336 model (?) that he sold just weeks later after he realized he liked his Ibanez better. Squeadlieshero, obviously Ben posses the skills to descide what guitar which suits him best. If its good for Ben, why bother what he plays? Its like saying: is he playing a G major chord? Why would one play such a crappy chord?
geez when did is say ben should not be playing ibanez? i didnt say anything like that. im just saying i like the tone but i dont like the playability of the guitars. this has nothing to do with ben.
well duh i know that, anyone who goes to ibanez website would know. the only reason i say crappy is becuase i play one and i dont really like it. its an af75d kind of a cheap one i guess. i just dont have the money to get an expensive guitar. i would love to have a hamer improv i think those are so sexy
dude thats the beauty of guitars you can buy what you want. people have different shape hands and if benedetto suits you best than buy it. is benedetto affiliated with hamer cause im pretty sure i said hamer improv. not benedetto.
Hmm, he uses Fender amps. One modified Princeton with 12" speaker instead of a 10" and a Fender 65 Deluxe, a Robert Keeley modified RAT distortion, Boss compressor, LXP 1 Lexicon delay unit, and Deja Vibe (even if I never heard him use it). Dont know what delay pedal he uses, if he does that at all. Perhaps a Boss DD3 or something? Line 6 delay pedals are popular (but big), heard from a friend that T-Rex delays are really crazy as well. Its a jungle you know...;) Best, Sandemose
This melody has been haunting me since I first heared it on the record. Thanks Umblachery! I'm transcribing it right now and the video is of great help... I hope I can do it.
I have not heard of him before , and I am not sure why , he is quite wonderful indeed , i love his understatement , harmony and space , and sense of journey ... great show !

Although the bass and drums are too loud, what a recording!
Simply stunning stuff.

Lovely music! On a completely technical note: what a tasteful use of 5/2 by Ted Poor from 5:37-5:40. Not something you hear every day.

Why is Monder a genuis?
You insert a term with no musicological justification for the use of the term other than to appear intelligent.
You forgot to intone AWESOME.
Idiot.
