Also, if you stabbed somebody with a blade, they could still shoot you. A good shotgun blast to the head, and there would be no stabbing. I would prefer to have a shotgun close up and a rifle far away. There is no situation where i would want a knife (except maybe stealth, but a good silencer on a small handgun would be better).

@Hiei102493 Actually kill distance with a knife is something like 12 feet, in that distance you have enough time to get to someone before they raise their weapon and pull the trigger, unless of course they are expecting you, with which they would likely have their weapon ready, but a gun to close is ineffective.

@SirRecluse In a fair fight (you both know you are fighting), the gun wins easily at 12 feet. In an unfair fight, whoever has the advantage could probably win.

Even really close up somebody with a nice Super Shorty or something of that type wins or ties, but never loses. Even after you get a few stabs/slashes in, he can still shoot you. If he blasts you in the head with the shotgun, I don't think you will be able to stab.

@ChaseDarkness yeah i suppose it could, using the pulling motion of leaning your wrist back as the mechanical force needed to overcome the issue. You could have two springs applying equal pressure, for extended and retracted, and the pull from moving your wrist back tips the scales on this balance. Would be very delicate and complicated tho. Would love to see it.
