WHY were these idiots driving at full speed into a cloud of smoke where "you couldn't see past your indicator lights" in the first place?
The road not being closed isnt the real issue here, it's the alarming fact that so many people thought "Hey, even though I'm driving a 3000lb machine through a cloud of smoke that I can't see past my hood in, I'll just keep going at full speed"
I was just north of that accident on 75 when it happened... Most of the cars were speeding around my tractor trailer like they were in a hurry to get to their funerals or something.. In low visibility situations like this people need to slow down and pay attention or get off the roads... I feel bad for the ones in that crash.. :( sad sad day
The FHP dropped the ball big time. They were too stupid to know that the cold morning air was going to cause the fog and smoke to mix and stay at a low level. There stupidity killed 11 people.
@Kardaszpm 1st: They didn't know that there was a fire. The fire was completely unexpected. There was a possibility for it, but it wasn't expected. 2nd: their*
@twizz420 in these situations, people are told not to stop, to move slowly, also, there was a large traffic jam, the highway had just been reopened. when the smoke started, visibility dropped to zero
@Kardaszpm No, the drivers' stupidity killed 11 people. Anyone with half a brain would think "Well I can't see past my hood, so I'm going to pull over." but NOOO.
Blame the idiots who were driving into it in the first place.
Guys..... my friend Lidian's entire family died in this crash. please pray for her. She is in intensive care. it's horrible. she is so sweet and kind. but she is alive, and God has a plan for her life. just pray for strength. thanks!
@azariah636 people need to slow down in low-visibility situations like this. People drive too fast. Once one accident starts, vehicles pile up faster than the blink of an eye.
@andrewsapirate THANK YOU! Finally, someone with intelligence...
Driving into a cloud with NO VISIBILITY is like running around the streets naked with a blindfold on and a 12 inch knife in your hand. Seriously. I don't feel bad for ANYONE who chose to drive into this. People shouldnt have driven into it in the first place and if they did and decided to STOP in the middle of the road then it's their own damn fault.
@Zapppo I live in the area where this happened. The fires are due to a drought we have been going through and the smoke combined with fog made visibility 0. The interstate was closed, but reopened when conditions "improved" and shortly after, this accident happend.
@52892e Yeah well if they didnt open the highway then everyone would bitch that they were late so they opened it and now people are going to act like they have no control over the car they're driving so that they can blame it on everyone else.

What the fuck did they expect?

@azariah636 The reason is the mixture of fog & smoke is as thick as pea soup.
No one could have predicted the fire.
These people were perhaps the first ones to find out.
If it was arson & they are caught, they could face manslaughter charges.

It was closed again the following night. I've seen fog like this b4, it is eery & thick especially when you can barely see the sun.
