  • The sketches in the opening scenes are wonderful. I love all of Bakshi's work but American Pop and Fritz the Cat have to be my top two.

  • it would be amazing to see this remastered and in 720p.

  • I wonder how long it took people to animate things link this back then?

  • @TEJAYheni This is rotoscoped, meaning they used real actors and drew over them.

  • @BLACKSABBATH0HM

Do you think it predates Avatar on modern rotoscoping and almost better than Polar Express? you glad this rotoscoping doesn't go into uncanny valley?

  • @Johnlindsey289 Im not particularly an expert on animation I just prefer these oldschool styles of animation. I think its better to be experimental than to just try to have the most realistic and costly animation. Some of Bakshis techniques may have been cheap but they were very artistic imo.

  • Excellent...

  • Good thing this movie isn't about todays music or you would have to look for it in the Horror section!

  • OY!

  • thnx 4 uploading

  • Anyone saw Bakshi's Wizards? The war scenes are a little too long for me but the rest is really good.

  • Gives me goosebumps

  • great video

  • Great American pop culture history lesson.

  • sure is rotoscope in here. bad rotoscope

  • @Gargantupimp

Nothing wrong with rotoscope. Its not cheating, its just a different effect.

  • @Treemeadow yeah its nice if its drawn real well but bakshi seems to just make my eyes ache...

  • @Gargantupimp

What do you think of James Cameron's rotoscoping in Avatar?

  • @Johnlindsey289 Avatar rotoscoping Seemed fine to me. I think that this is a good but small example of good rotoscoping /watch?v=d8stkqssLYc. You tell me.

  • @Gargantupimp

What did you think of the rotoscoping used in Robert Zemeckis's Beowulf and Christmas Carol or even Fire and Ice?

  • havnt seen those first two, but fire and ice looked great, although perhaps the story could of been alot better

  • Comment removed

  • @Treemeadow

What about what James Cameron and Robert Zemeckis uses?

  • @Johnlindsey289

Whats that? OH, you mean Motion-Capture? Its like roto-scope of the CGI variety, a very brilliant invention. Cinema and Film has ALWAYS been about the end result- the process is meant to be filled with whatever shortcuts that can be found, and none of it's cheating :D

  • Damn, haven't seen this movie since it came out. Those were times!!

  • Adoro esta animação... é uma das melhores.

  • o god i dont know why i cried on this movie. thank you so much for uploading. can you upload cool world?

  • A classic film! I love the rotoscoping effect.

  • @ryanspeed

Me too and do you think the rotoscoping was an early prototype used in movies like Avatar or Beowulf?

  • @Johnlindsey289 Since most everything is all computerized nowadays I'd say probably not.

  • @ryanspeed

Not everything is computerized, there's still some 2D animation especially direct to DVD or on TV including stop motion animation and clay animation. Well movies like Beowulf and Avatar did excellent jobs on modern rotoscoping technology similar to Bakshi and James Cameron is a fan of Bakshi.

  • @Johnlindsey289 Yea, there still is some out there. It's fastly becoming a lost art for sure!

  • @ryanspeed

Well Princess and The Frog was a success and so was Secret of Kellis which is a brilliant 2D European animated movie , Ponyo and Illusionist (Not the 2006 Norton movie but the French animated movie). We even have stop motion animated movies now sometimes thanks to Corpse Bride and Coraline as box-office successes even Mr. Fox got great reviews and Clay was successful with Chicken Run and Wallace and Gromit. And Ghibli does make 2D animated movies still and continues, you know Ghibli?

  • @Johnlindsey289 I've heard of it

  • great movie.

but so depressing. I dont know if i could watch the whole thing again.

Glad I watched it once though

  • When did kikes become an acceptable word?

  • I AM A DISHWASHER!!! MY HANDS IS POIMANENTLY PUCKERED!!!

  • A mi me gusta este programa de tv (que lo dan en animax),especialmente la cancion que dice : don't you want somebody who love?Don't you need somebody who love?

  • Great flick! I actually have it on laser disk!

  • Stevers, don't forget to put the company that owns the movie on your description so it won't get removed

  • Best movie in American history by far.. When I watched this movie I said, "this is the true meaning of American culture"!!! Has to love this movie.

  • bakshi is phenomenal, what a great artist and perspective on his generation. The kikes were so realistic too!

  • @0lyella maybe it's you mean so the realistic were to the kikes?

  • face fuk

  • Rotoscoping. I remember this from my high school days and it was the 'new' method at the time. Fantastic. It still holds appeal and brings back memories of sitting in the theater with the girlfriend watching it in awe.

A definite sign of the times. Thanks so much for the memories!

  • this animation is insane

  • I feel most of Bashki feature were poorly plotted : Wizards (yukk!), this one (okay in certain spots), LOTR (i think, awful), and finally w/ early hot appearence of Brad Pitt in "Cool World" (Piece of shit!!)

  • @yaywhewclips242 this guy did cool world>

  • Now I think this is so intense up until the point where Jaacov says "oi...".

  • This movie kind of reminds me of An American Tail.

  • @needles1987 Yes but more for adults.

  • thats funny an american tail popped up when I searched for this.

  • lol i found out about this movie on a fifth element vhs woot woot

  • OMG!!!!

    THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS!!!

I haven't seen this since it first came out!

IT'S BEEN ON MY MIND FOR MONTHS!!!

    xxx ooo xxx!!!

  • Such a dramatic opening sequence. The music and images are hypnotizing.

  • Such a beautiful, sad and unique animated feature for mature audiences. I loved this since i was 16 in 1997 when i bought it on video since i love adult animation.

Anyone who loves this one should also check out "Pink Floyd The Wall" and "Grave of the Fireflies" (Another emotional animated mature feature that doesn't relay on sex and graphic violence like this one).

  • @Johnlindsey289 aaaahhh grave of the fireflies is soo good! it's a shame that it's only well known in anime lover-circles

  • Comment removed

  • notjustadog: where did you get the Blu Ray version? I have to have it. Thanks.

  • ralph Bakshi did a cartoon color over of real people and did Lord of the rings like that

  • Awesome movie, anyone thinks Bakshi does good adult cartoons like the Japanese?

  • bakshi is the only cartoonist who can compare to the japs

  • BLACKSABBATH0HM

The Liberals will have a field-day with your insensitivity, the correct term is Jappo.

    I love the Rag Time.

  • Comment removed

  • @Johnlindsey289 fail impression of the japanese

  • @Namriu94

Even Europe makes good adult animation movies like Fantastic Planet and LightYears (Gandahar). If you like this movie you should try Grave of the Fireflies and Pink Floyd's The Wall. Seen those? similar movies.

  • @Johnlindsey289 YES ^O^

  • @Namriu94

Wasn't Grave such a sad and tragic animated movie?

  • @Johnlindsey289 i have dry eyes and i ware contacts but i cried the first time i saw it , it was soo good

  • @Namriu94 no bakshi used real people then colored them in

  • @Johnlindsey289 lolwut? where did that come from?

  • @B29Bomber

Well Europe and Japan both make fantastic animated movies for adults too like Bakshi. There's Europe's Fantastic Planet, Trippletes of Bellville, Watership Down, Plague Dogs and LightYears (Gandahar) and in Japan we have classics like Akira, Grave of the Fireflies, Princess Mononoke, Ghost in The Shell,, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (aka Warriors of the WInd), Metropolis, Fist of the North Star, Vampire Hunter D 1 & 2 and more.

  • Thanks for uploading this!

  • This movie is absolutely beautiful, its gotta be one of the best I've ever seen. It really grips you on an emotional level that you wouldn't expect, and it has a beautiful visual style that you would expect from good old Ralph Bakshi.

  • Thanks for the upload!!!!!!!

  • Thanks for uploading this. I haven't seen this flick since I was a kid having no idea what I was looking at, but knew I liked it. lol.

  • Same here. My dad and I watched it when I was probably 12 or so, and all the pop culture references went right over my head (being that I had no grasp on history)...

  • I know how this kid is its BENNY GOODMAN!!!!!

He was a jewish russian boy how came to america, and on....

  • Would you prefer Fascist Christian?! lol

  • lol

  • Maldicion no lo encuentro en español no puede ser

  • lo van a dar en animax el lunes 24 a eso de las 8 por ahi

  • this movie is great!

I hope they release this on BluRay

  • "American Pop" is an R-rated traditional animation/CGI film

  • buddy this is not traditionally animated...this is what is called rotoscoping....(yea spelled it wrong)..nor is it CGI...

  • "American Pop" is an R-rated traditional animation/CGI film created by Ralph Bakshi Company.

  • Shure some parts of the movie is early CGI, but mostly it's Rotoscoped, which was done without computers.

  • By the way I Dont want the monalisa to be remade into some hollywood chick

  • OK your right it dosent need to be remade the classic animated movie is better but i love this movie.

  • Wow, look at the animation.

A long way from the kind of animation he did for Fritz the Cat

  • it would be also cool if they remake this into a Live Action Film

  • why? its art (at least for me) it should not be touched.

or you like a remake of the mona lisa made in photoshop and a photo of some hollywood chick???

  • If you made it as a live action film it would feel rushed.

Anyway, since it's supposed to end in the '80s, a remake would be kind of redundant.

  • No Guitar Hero or Rock Band video game can capture the feel of music and stardom when you compare them to this fantastic film!!!

  • I saw this film when I was 7. I think I learned a little too much that day. But I love the movie and it rose my appreciation to music.

  • Never heard of American Pop movie.

Can anyone tell me if this was released in the U.K. If so, how did I miss it?

5 star musical viewing, when you're in the mood. I only found it after hours of Janis Joplin searching. Thanks for posting.

  • Thank you for this one sir.

  • the animation is very realist

  • realistic*, check out the movements and all, plus the movie overall is really good.

  • Well, yes, it is rotoscoping.

  • oh, well that explains a lot, lol.

thanks for letting me know i didnt know that, although i had read the comments i didnt pay much attention to the comments saying its rotoscopic, cos i didnt know what it meant. now i do :)

  • Wow.. i havent seen this movie in donkeys years, im glad you put it up here!!

  • Maple Leaf Rag.

  • Coming Soon From Imperial Entertainment

  • Remember when they finally released this on video (1997) I believe. I was working at a rental store and was amazed that the music licensing had delayed it so long. Columbia really dropped the ball. This would have cleaned up on Lazerdisc!

  • absolutely awesome comment

  • I haven't seen this for around 20 years! Thanks for posting!!!

  • this almost seems like something that would be made in this day and age this is deffinately amazing and way ahead of its time

  • That Ralph Bakshi was way ahead of his time when he did this and his other rotoscope films. What a great movie!

  • Lol at 8:36

  • this is an epic fucking film. totally and easily one of the all-time greatest classics of all time!!!

  • @mattingly17 I agree! It's on my list of 200 greatest films from the 20th century!

  • OMG THANK YOU FOR PUTTING THIS UP!! I haven't seen this in years :)

  • I wish more movies like this were made today

  • @ZoloLover you damn right 100% !!!

  • I love this movie!

  • Wow, full load rotoscoping :D

  • The characters were designed by Louise Zingarelli - 'the feminine Normal Rockwell' - who also designed the characters in "The Chipmunk Adventure", "Starchaser: The Legend of Orin", Holly and Lonette in Ralph Bakshi's "Cool World", and conceptual design in "Titan A.E.".

  • damn dude , this movie is fuckin badass, so much music-fuck yea

  • Excellent; what a great vision of the development of American musical entertainment. I presented this to my family in the music biz.

    Thanks for posting!

  • excellent animation.... very inspirational

  • freakin love this movie, hard to find though

  • thanks for posting! :)

  • This movie is simply amazing.

  • I saw it today and I think its Bakshi's best movie!
