  • @kowalityjesus We just don't like these religious leaders preaching their outdated "morals" to the world while at the same time doing whatever they please themselves. All it does is divide people with this stupid "my god is better than your god" nonsense.

  • @megamarsvin I feel like we don't have enough respect for tradition as a culture. Lots has changed in the modern era, but we will repeat the mistakes of history if we don't hold a more reasonable perspective. Christian tradition is very useful and continues to be a force of good.

Pope-haters generally don't have any helpful suggestions so I will continue to deride them.

  • @kowalityjesus I think the problem is we know too much about the Church these days to respect it.

You're conflating Christianity and Catholicism here. I've no problem with followers of Jesus but in my eyes the Church has always been a perversion of the good ideas Jesus brought. I don't hate the pope, I hate the institution he represents.

Religion is a fine thing in a person but as soon as you try to make it into an organization it becomes corrupt and evil.

  • @megamarsvin I see where you are coming from, and at a time in my life I would definitely have agreed.

I think the corruption in Catholic Church is overblown. I personally have much admiration for those who are members and clergy in that Church. You make an interesting statement about religion, but I think "organizing" religion is the only way to accomplish much good. No one is a perfect Christian, human beings each have their own relationship with God, and the Church helps guide.

  • @kowalityjesus That's true, I know a lot of atheists like to make the argument that if you're not exactly like Jesus you're not a proper Christian. Any rational person should see that's nonsense of course.

But from what I've seen your description applies very much to community churches, not so much the Vatican. I have known many Christians who are amazing people but I just don't get that same sense of magnanimous, selfless charity from the Holy See.

  • @megamarsvin I have heard of the extravagence of the holy see, and indeed the cathedral in my town is incredibly beautiful. Perhaps it does not celebrate the qualities that Christ taught were important. :(

It is not arbitrary who is pope. The man is a studied scholar and devout Christian. I have heard conspiracies involving the vatican, and know there is lots that I dont know, but as far as a compass and time capsule for western civilization, I don't think we need look further.

  • @kowalityjesus I suppose so, it's certainly an important part. For someone like me though, brought up with a classical education, European culture will always be Rome and Greece :) I can't say the Christian ages are the ones I look on with the most pride. Again not because of Christians or Jesus' teachings, those I hold in high regard.

  • @megamarsvin I think many people take a negative perspective to the legacy of the Church; they find that it limited or detracted from the otherwise high trajectory of european culture expressed by the classical ages.

I think to the contrary that the Church is the *fruit* of Classical culture. I think of the Church and Christianity as Europe's 'operating system,' which enabled and restricted Europe to a straighter and narrower path beyond the nationalism of Graeco-Roman thought.

  • @hookah604 you gotta love islam, there you can fuck with young girls, and your god allows you to do that.

  • @WMWWMWMWMMWW But if it would allowed, than they probably wouldnt think about it as fun.
