I was once kissed on the lips by this man when i was walking down the street after a concert and I saw him and asked him for his autograph. He refused the autograph but gave me the kiss!
This made me sad to watch. I saw him in concert at least twice with The Chieftains. His first solo album CAROLAN'S RECEIPT got me into Irish music. Was SO sad when I heard he died.
Derek Bell was a personal hero of mine. His work on "Chieftains 5 " inspired me to take up the harp about 30 years ago. I once met him backstage at the U of W Seattle, in 1978 after a Chieftains performance. I could barely summon the ability to speak to him, awestruck as I was. But he was very personable, leprechaun-like, and astonishingly cross-eyed, i.e. human. I'm very sorry he's gone, but they say the harp is the instrument of choice in Heaven...We might get an encore, after all.
indeed...what an amazing musician he was...God rest his gentle soul. thank God paddy and the boys are still playing...will we ever here anyone like the chieftains ever again? i'm only 39 yrs old, but i wonder...
When I think Harp, I immediately think Derek Bell. He was really a brilliant musician and I have always admired him, just as I admire the rest of The Chieftains. RIP Derek Bell 1935 - 2002
This man was an amazing musician and his death is a loss to us all! Thank God for his recordings and for the gift of music and legacy the Chieftains have given us!
I was walking through a tower record shop late one night and heard the most
magical sound, the first time I heard the chieftains, the recording the celtic harp.
If there is a more beautiful sound on this planet i have not heard it yet !
