Ozzy sounds remarkably good for a guy who was supposedly out his head all the time. I think side 1 of Never Say Die is excellent, you can't argue with Johnny Blade or Junior's Eyes. The title track isn't bad either. Things start to slide on side 2, Shockwave has a great opening riff but the song as a whole is disjointed. Things go rapidly downhill from there.
i remember having the black sabbath story video tape for my 8'th birthday in 95 and this song was at the credits, and it's only now i'm coming across it and actually giving never say die a chance, this song is class
I saw them three nights later in Albuquerque, the last show on the tour, the last show before they broke up. We made a giant cross out of cardboard covered with aluminum foil and threw it on stage. Geezer picked it up and was flashing it around at the crowd. Good times, good times...
OMG! I saw that same Don Kirschner Rock concert show that BS played Never Say Die on too!! I must have been 9 years old at the time and if remember correctly it was like after 1am because D. Kirschner came on after Saturday Night Live on NBC in New York back then. What a great memory!!!...
Never Say Die is a tremendously underrated album. The whole album is great and truly unique.
Air Dance is one of the most hated tracks, but I think it is a great showcase of what Sabbath is capable of. Other than the usual "Evil and dark" stuff of course.
Bitchen live recording! ....Ozzy's singing well, and all in all they were sounding pretty good if you ask me. I'm one of those who really liked Never Say Die, so it's way cool to get to hear stuff from that album done live.
I love that song nothing more from 0:41 till 1:35 is the best part of the song ( shock waves )--(Black sabbath) and the sound of the guitar of TONY and the voice of Ozzy's voice and also the bass and drums bill geezer is encerio
I hallucinated to this when I was young I thought an A-bomb was exploding behind me The lyric" Look behind you" was a terrifying thing to me at that moment! alllllrightttttttnnnnooowwwwwww!!!!!!!
its hard to believe it, but even though sabbath were going through bad times, Ozzy was actually in top form here! so was the rest of the group, they all showed their skills.
"blacksabfan" is incorrect when he states that there are only 2 SB recordings from the 1970 to 1978 era of Black Sabbath. Carl wrote in with the following comment: "By the way, I'm unsure if you note this on your site, but Selland Arena '78 is also an audience tape. It was recorded with a Nakamichi CM-300 microphones and I believe a cassette recorder..."
Ozzy never should have re-joined the band in 1978. They had a much better vocalist with Dave Walker who they performed "Juniors Eyes" with on the BBC TV in the UK in January of 1978. Too bad he was only a temporary replacement. Ozzy can't even remember the name of the Shockwave song!
Good job for posting this song! I saw the NSD Tour on Dec 2 1978, indoors at the Oakland Coliseum Arena. I was only 14 years old at the time and nearly got trampled once the doors opened for the G.A. concert. This was less than a year before the tragic Riverfront Stampede.
I have to disagree with mr. crowbar, "techniccal exctasy" is the worst sabbath album with ozzy. Perhaps my opinion is unfavorable amongst some sab fans, but to musicans and especially in terms of composition, "NEVER SAY DIE", or NSD is superior. hmmm, never tried NSD! L.O.L.
Woah,Another Rare Tune Live,I Love "Never Say Day",.A Great Epic Through Both sides,Although Not A concept Album,"Juniors Eyes" & "Hard Road"Are Masterpeices,Every Track is Justified for The Timing!!!
I would love to see sabbath with ozz again, or back in the 70's. This is probably the only good track off of never say die. You can tell they are so fucked up on that album.
I saw Black Sabbath in 1978 too. Sammy Hagar open up the concert with his Red album and then Van Halen come on Stage, this was their first national tour and Boston closed the show. Full Night of rock and roll. All the bands played so loud.
I saw Sabbath on this tour and was lucky enough to meet Tony and Geezer......pretty wild for a teenager to meet his rock idols!!! Both of them were great and talked to us for like 15 minutes each. The concert was incredible with the with the band in top form!!!
We are kinda like the fremen of dune, us redneck sabbath fans. we exist in vast, vast numbers.... five in the audience, thats funny. Sabbath fkn rules ! Yeah!!
I agree! Wish they had under-produced the never say die album, instead of over producing it. Because for example, this live version sounds way way better then the studio version.
I just downloaded a bootleg version of this show that had cover art and assuming the picture is of the same show (which I think it is) it looks like a nice little gig, maybe a few thousand people. I looks like it was played in a theater because there's not much of a stage and the backdrop is right up close. Pretty cool looking actually.
Of note in this picture is Ozzy wearing a shirt that says Blizzard Of Oz. Seen this pic before but never looked that closely until listening to this great clip
