This concert, but especially this song performance, really sucked (in my opinion). Daniel's intention with 'Straight Lines' was much different compared to how he and the band played it a few months later in ths studio. I can picture Launay then - "it's too hard on your voice, tune down a half step, play slower...". Interesting version but I'm glad they redid it.
Daniel Johns, has an awesome voice. If, he would just work on a middle a bit he would be number one. Only thing might be to change back the style, but I know he had difficulties with his life..... I hope some one will see and tell him "work on the middle" !

It's hit or miss on the live versions of this song. If he's healthy, this song is still in range, if not... well you get a result like this...
Unfortunately, while his voice is still fantastic, his battles with addictions, anorexia, and the nodules he had on his throat have kind of destroyed his voice. He's still 10x better than most vocallists out there, but he's not what he used to be (depending on the night)

compare this performance to the aria 2007 one...which was so perfect that it could have been lip sinc'd (im not suggesting that it was) this peerformance is rough and out of tune, but who cares? either way this is a brilliant song and sends shivers down my spine.

There's no telling if he was sick. It's easy to sing in front of a camera or in a studio until you get it right, but there's a million factors in a live performance. I'm pretty sure he knew he wasn't any good... but it's not like he's going to stop the song and say, "Eh, I'm completely worn out from doing several shows in a row and I've got a cold coming in." I don't know if he was sick, but I've seen him perform this song flawlessly live... so something was up.
Being the first shows with Young Modern is no excuse for not only having poor vocal technique but also more importantly not even being able to sing to correct pitch.... flat as a tack the whole song... for someone at the top of the live performance spectrum this is completely unacceptable!! anyone who paid money to listen to this should Have demanded their money back...I know I would have. I think this performance was unique, they did songs differently. It may not be their best, but it stands out as something bold silverchair did. Also, this really marked the return of them before Young Modern.

btw, that final version got half tone down, and in this show its standard tuning. if the song is difficult to sing itself, figure out how it is if its higher and while the band wasnt in shape, out of touring and activity.
yep if you want to hear a good version of this - don't bother with the many live versions out there - check out the studio version or something with an official release. (quality control gone mad.) poor Dan must have been sick this night AS WELL :D

I bought Young Modern. For the first month, I thought it was pretentious crap that all my muso mates pretended to like. For the second month, I didn't listen to it at all. I started getting it in the third month, and now I love it almost as much as Diorama. It takes time, but it's worth getting used to.
See that smirk at 1:25? That's him thinking to himself on how much he's buttfucked his fanbase by slowly murdering Silverchair's style and influence they had on a generation of teens that grew up with them.

dude this was before the song was even really finished and perfected. a lot of things are different, most importantly of which is that this was sung in standard tuning instead of the way it actually was recorded tuned a half step down. and thats hard enough to sing. and this version is even higher!!! so lay off. geez hes on of the few people who can actually sing this song well anyway.so fuck off

There's no telling if he was sick. It's easy to sing in front of a camera or in a studio until you get it right, but there's a million factors in a live performance. I'm pretty sure he knew he wasn't any good... but it's not like he's going to stop the song and say, "Eh, I'm completely worn out from doing several shows in a row and I've got a cold coming in." I don't know if he was sick, but I've seen him perform this song flawlessly live... so something was up.

Being the first shows with Young Modern is no excuse for not only having poor vocal technique but also more importantly not even being able to sing to correct pitch.... flat as a tack the whole song... for someone at the top of the live performance spectrum this is completely unacceptable!! anyone who paid money to listen to this should Have demanded their money back...I know I would have. If i performed this badly on any of my shows I would'nt expect to be paid at the end of them. Sorry Cheers

reasons why this song isn't up to par
1. This was like their first show in a long time
2. The new songs weren't finalized yet
3. Dan was trying a new way of presenting their older songs, as well as new
I think this performance was unique, they did songs differently. It may not be their best, but it stands out as something bold silverchair did. Also, this really marked the return of them before Young Modern.

most of you are talking like its from YM tour. its not bad 'cause the throat illness or whatever.just a horrible but first take from 2006. the song is half-way done & it took a good while till it got finally finished and good.
btw, that final version got half tone down, and in this show its standard tuning. if the song is difficult to sing itself, figure out how it is if its higher and while the band wasnt in shape, out of touring and activity.
nowadays, daniel sings it pretty comfortable.

yep if you want to hear a good version of this - don't bother with the many live versions out there - check out the studio version or something with an official release. (quality control gone mad.) poor Dan must have been sick this night AS WELL :D

as ive posted on one of the other videos from this show... its obvious daniel was pretty wasted that night, not to mention the sound on the video (a problem with the source, not this particular video) is terrible as well.

they weren't worn out from a long tour, this was one of thir first shows together in almost 6 years. and the song was only 4 days old. not to mention Daniel wrecked his voice on pot since 2004. he sounds great now. saw them last month. so awesome!

What the hell happened to Silverchair?! They're pansies now. This song is a disgrace to their '90s works. Obviously they are going to change from the time they are 15 to now, but you'd expect that by now they would have more testosterone than they did at 15 but that doesn't seem to be the case. And what the hell happened to Daniel's voice? Oh my god this is horrible.

I bought Young Modern. For the first month, I thought it was pretentious crap that all my muso mates pretended to like. For the second month, I didn't listen to it at all. I started getting it in the third month, and now I love it almost as much as Diorama. It takes time, but it's worth getting used to.

You're full of shit. Yes, this performance of the song does suck, but you can not expect their music to stay the same as when they were 15. I like pretty much all of their stuff, but they can't stay on the whole grunge thing or whatever. That time has definitely passed. It's been like 14 years or so and how could you not expect them to change at all? Their new stuff is great. This video is just a bad example. Get used to change man.
