@Ckurbe1 I think what you mean to say is that Filipino Martial Arts became more deadly and effective as an adaptive response to the Spanish having superior weapons (i.e. guns). I don't think it would be accurate to say Filipinos only developed martial arts after the Spanish invasion either. The existence of similar martial arts in Malaysia and Indonesia indicate that FMA systems were already present, since contact with Malaysia/Indonesia were limited due to colonization of all said islands.

Sand in the eyes is a valid means to facilitate an attack. A key ring full of keys works well also. Just a throwing motion can be enough to make an attacker flinch and give you a little more of an edge. Spit in the face can cause the same reaction.
