Drivers know the favorites and longshots...the tote board just makes it easier for them and the public to see it. The fans aren't around anymore because everything in racing hasn't been updated in 50 years. Here's hoping that Gural shakes things up at the Big M in the coming years. Pierce might not be able to add 2 and 2 but he can drive a horse and a race. Macdonnell never had a thought in his head besides "go fast now". Can't use his head to save his life.
Of course there's a club, but it's not the point. When the money is down, it's every man for himself...and if you're not in the club the boys will get downright nasty on you. The fact is sbsw connections should have scratched the beach as soon as they found out the bullville powerful was a 100,000 supplemental entry..............the race was lost the second the check was handed over to the BIG M.....................They were lucky to get second money on the evening! Im going to pay 100,000 and tell my driver to try to win it on the outside hung the mile against 2 best pacers of the day................I smell a fix, but the bettors were the real suckers!

Pierce fakes like he's going to pocket pull at 1:55 which causes P.M. to pull the plugs and waste Beach's last speed reserves an 1/8th too early, and the rest is history. The moral of the story is that P.M. has no clue what's going on when the money is down and the big boys come to play. It took P.M.'s idiocy, Pierce's genius and a monster mile from A.Official to get the most dominant pacer in recent history beat. Give Paul credit, he figured out the only way to lose, extremely impressive.

This is the same inside the box jackass thinking that reigns supreme in most driving colonies. When you have the best horse in the world, you don't try to find fancy ways get things done. When you have the best, you drive the horse like it's the best, period. Pauly Mac had supreme confidence in his horse and drove SBSW exactly how he should have been driven.
The bottom line is it was a freak, freak night for Art Official. How could Mac have known Art Official would race 4/5ths of a second faster THAN ANY OTHER 3YO STANDARDBRED PACER IN HISTORY up to that point?! One second faster than any 3YO in M1 History. There are many, many times drivers make mistakes. This wasn't one of those times.

The Beach out to the half in 51...deserved to win. Was tought to see him get beat as hes 10x the best. Nobody lost any respect for him tho, his record speaks for itself:-)
A truly stunning upset with stunning fractions. SBSW had a brutal trip. Any horse with a trip like that with those fractions would have faded heading into the stretch. If Macdonell was a bit more patient this horse would have had a perfect record. Oh well, still pretty good for Canada. lol

i agree, pierce did race a smart race, but he didn't "let" the beach go in front of him, he only lucked out that beach had to go three wide to do it. That was the gas short in the tank in the end. This is still SBSW's best race of a lifetime. Being parked 2 and 3 wide, at that speed, and counting the extra distance he travelled, he's one hell of a machine. I hope his babies have his style, and heart.

What a race! When "The Beach" hit the half in 51 & 1/5 , I knew we had a possable record! GREAT drive by Pierce getting Art Offical up to win!!I was glad I was there to see it, as I am at the Pace each year. This one I will always remember as probably the most exciting I've seen since Real Desire With John Campbell in the bike upset Bettors Delight and Mike LaChance in '01!!
Its funny, art official goes in 47 and races a hech of a race. The beach gets behind a 100,000 supplement and macdonnell is supposed to know he was cooked at the half. All i can say is art official had a great drive and equalled his tuffness as a horse , but dont tell me some bull shit that the beach is a hack or even p.m cannot drive. The beach was a great spark for racing and macdonnell has won over 4,000 victories which does make him at least a credible racehorse driver.
