Well, being a bass beyond a certain range, ur ear has to be keener and keener. When I dip below bass D, it gets uber tough really quick to ind the exact harmonizing pitch. When the other three voice parts have a slight dissonance on top of it, I have to have the tone memorized muscularly. I find the tenor parts easiest even though you have to be quiet and support through the long phrases. The harmonies are easier up high. 5/5
@Icyveins906 hey dude! ya youre right it's usually set up like BBLT. but take the opposite! TLBB that's really common, as well. actually, i think setting up in that order is much more common! also, listen how each part has a solo written in. you can sorta hear. type in 'tonight tonight rendezvous' in the search box. they're really good and you can clearly see who has the parts. (except that in this one, the baritone is singing the post, and in theirs, it's the lead.) hope that helped!
If you do want this arrangement, you do need to contact Jay directly (using the email on the website). It's $80 plus $40 clearance, and then $1 per copy. Steep, but it legalises everything if you want to perform it.
For those who inquired about obtaining the arrangement, I just took a look at Jay's Web site (for his publishing company, Gold-Silver-Bronze Medal Music, Inc), & did not see "Tonight" (or "Tonight Tonight") among the arrangements listed as available. Perhaps he might be amenable to some kind of special deal if contacted directly, unless copyright restrictions on the song present an insurmountable problem.
is there anyway to get sheet music for this arrangement? i tried transcribing it, and think i got most of it, but there are a few tricky parts id like to see if i got right
Maybe I'm just seeing things, but around 2:02 it looks like Jason gives Jeff a little tap on the back, and I swear I can see Jeff nodding his head, like a signal. Anyone else notice that? It's remarkably subtle.
its something most barbershoppers do. By placing your hand on another persons back you can literally "feel" their note, in the sense that you feel the vibrations going through their body, and adds another way to tune to their note!
So i have been trying to get the sheet music to this song, and cant find it anywhere... And i have been to the arrangers website (Jay Giallombardo) and its no where..... . . . . .
Actually, Jay's quartet Grandma's Boys (1979 Int'l Champs) sang it first. Check out their LP "Grandma's Boys Tonight" ("What's an LP, Grandpa?"), or get a copy of their CD "When the Toy Soldiers Marched on Parade." I'm a proud member of New Tradition Chorus--not to be confused with the champion quartet of the same name--& sang under Jay's direction for 12 years, including our gold-medal-winning performance in Nashville in 2001.
@bhsbass: Actually, Grandma's Boys sang it first. But you're right, it's Jay's arrangement. It was originally on the quartet's "Tonight" LP, now out of print, & is included on their double CD, "When the Toy Soldiers Marched on Parade."
@monkeygoosemoose uh, Music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. I'm sure it's out on DVD somewhere. Natalie Wood was one of the stars, as was Rita Moreno. Highly recommended.
@monkeygoosemoose don't feel bad. I actually haven't seen West Side story either. The lyrics for this arrangement of the song are in the song "Tonight, Tonight" sung in part by Tony, but it's a line buried in the middle of the song and then repeated. When searching for the lyrics myself, I had to read through the whole thing to spot it; the original is sung by many characters and different words.
haha, I'll let those rumors remain just that. I have a solution for this dispute. Create a monster bass category and place them in the top 2, sound good?
haha well i'll let you set that one up. I have a few question regarding it tho. 1) Is it street, ring, or cage match? 2)Can back up get involved if need be. Like the basses and the tenors and the baris back up the respected opponent? 3) Will there be tagging? (tag in tag out, and the barbershop tagging)
...will it be broadcasted on youtube or paper view? lol
@Icyveins906 yes i know. he is the second in from the left...where the lead pretty much always stands. I think he looks like the actor you mentioned. do you think the tenor does?
oh geez ppl the baritone starts the post off in falsetto, takes a quick breath while the others slide and then comes back in full voice gradually!! OK?! End of useless discussion!
Well they go "to---niiiiight" and the 'to' is D major, then EbMA7, Cm7 3rd inversion, then F2 with the A on the bottom, then AMA7, and G major, according to the sheet music that my friend has. not sure if I said a few chords correctly but that is basically what they are. Phenomenal.
The sheet music I have has the bari part doing B flat, B, E leading up to the A flat post. (The B flat on "to" and the B and E on "night") and the tenor on G and then the A flat before going down to an F sharp, right as the bari hits the A flat post. Is this not how the Acoustix sing it?
In this case, "no". Now, I COULD go on and on about how I dont NEED copies of sheet music to learn a song, or that I'm PLAGUED by perfect pitch, or that I've spent YEARS upon YEARS training my ears, or that I "JUST KNOW" what I'm listening to but, I'm not going to do THAT. Music IS a subjective art, open to interpretation and vagaries of style. However, music IS about what you hear, and not what you see. Now, having said that, it really doesnt matter what a given piece of sheet music says.
I guess we'll agree to disagree then, I still hear the tenor switch with the bari. I didn't need the sheet music to learn the song, either, but it helps for reference.
I'm not holier than thou. It has always bothered me that people choose to use their eyes rather than their ears when it comes to music. Have you ever heard the acoustix first album? This song is on there... Its even here on YouTube... Singing it the same way they do here and countless times before and since... this time Jason just takes a breath! Vocal Spectrum sings it the same way as the Acoustix. No switching parts.
It's not switching parts, I'm not using my eyes... You can hear Jason's timbre on the notes leading up to the post. Todd goes down to his next note while Jason takes a breath and comes in with the A flat post. That's why the A flat disappears for a second. The bari doesn't have an A flat for the whole tag.
I had to listen to it twice to be sure, but you are right. The baritone and tenor switch notes before Jason carries on with the post. It really says a lot to the overall blend of this quartet that it's so difficult to tell when they switch. Gas House Gang does the same thing in the end of "Sit Down You're Rockin the Boat"
It's actually pretty obvious that Jason just takes a quick breath and stays on the same note. Todd is below Rick for the first part of the tag anyway.
Listen carefully to the two inner parts. There is no break in the sound for either part. Also, the physical movements of the three lower parts indicate swipes, while Jason January stands still for the post with only a small indication that he cuts out for a moment.
Ok, maybe I was being a bit hasty before. It does appear that Jason takes a breath right before the final post, but I don't think that's so he can continue the post in full voice. It's more likely that he was tanking up before the swipe. It's almost comical how much this debate has gone on. It says a lot about the true blend of the quartet that their voices are almost indistinguishable from each other. As for the gestures, Todd and Jason move in unison, as all quartets should.
Thank you RangerJoe579. I'm glad somebody else can hear what's going on. You can scroll through the comments and find a similar discussion I had with another user. BTW - Todd is a friend of mine and verified this "sneaker breath" (as he puts it) that Jason takes... In Todd's words: Jason's done that for years so that the beginning of the post isn't overbearing. We are older now and these high notes don't come as soft or easy as they used to. It's all about keeping the dynamics!
@laoriginalus They're not quite as good as The Buffalo Bills...I don't think anyone will ever beat them, but they are very VERY good. I tip my hat to you gentlemen. =)
The tag... Nobody switched parts. Jason goes into the hanger in his head voice. Then around the 1:47-1:48 mark, he takes a short breath and proceeds with the hanger in full voice.
Actually, the tenor is on the A flat and the bari part has a slight build up of two notes before he gets to it, and the tenor goes down to a different note.
It looks like they were running into a little vocal fatigue. Jason's voice sounds the most strained, as he has many of the hold notes on the tags. That can kill anyones voice. I bet it is hard to stay vocally healthy when you travel all over the world.
Wow, really disappointing compared to the recording. I think they over did it a bit. Too much liberty with their inflections corrupted their chord structure. The tag that Glory Days did of the piece sounds much better.
friggin Jason January is one of the best darn barbershoppers I've heard... That perfect voice isn't enough, the guy simply just has to be able to hit those Ab/A notes too!!!

Traditionally, the formation is BBLT, so how do they have it set up? The song makes it difficult to figure out.
