They were on convoy security and the truck pulling the trailer had mechanical trouble and could not continue.

They did not have the equipment to fix it and were not in a good area to wait for mechanics that could.

They moved the truck off to the side of the road and destroyed it rather than allowing it to fall into enemy hands.

Actually, they are not Marines or even active Army or even in Afghanistan.

They were members of the Iowa Army National Guard and the 34th Infantry Division deployed to Iraq from 2005-2007; they were the first unit caught in the surge and served a 16 month tour.

Specifically, I believe they were members of the 1st Battalion, 133rd Infantry, my old battalion.

CBS's 60 Minutes did a story on them and followed them from mobilization to deployment home.

It aired Memorial day weekend '07.

It tore a base ball size hole in the door & blew the entire inner door panel off, shredded it. The really funny thing was that was a practice "dummy" / simulation round. The round in the video punched the tank, then went off & then set off fumes in the tanker which blew the ends out of it.
