The light from reflectors tends to be 3-4 stops less than the key that is the source. If you need a lower ratio you need to use a 2nd light for fill. You can feather it until you hit the desired ratio. Hint: use a meter in EV mode and ISO 100 to determine ratios as well as key level. Many cameras want at least 100 lux, and you are better off at 400 lux. Sekonic has a lux to EV conversion chart.
@DizzyDuckMan yea now they get payed and there's new people and stuff... i liked it when Eric did it for fun- he wasn't like a pro or anything like that.
I know most of this... I learnt some really important bits tho, I used to struggle with windows cos they cast shadows on the side your shooting and there's that white balance issue... I wont now. I had my way of overcoming it, but it weren't as good!
No shit...That has to be one of the worst chroma keys I've seen on youtube. You almost have to try to make it look that bad. I've seen 9 year old kids do better.
It's actually deliberate, is surposed to give him a stylistic comic book look, The same effect is on the Indie Mogul logo but its harder to see because its already black.
I love how these guys are supposed to teach us how to light, yet their green screen and chroma keying is absolutely horrible. It's good to know that they can really light!
Everyone comes on youtube and explains 3 point lighting on a subject but I am really wondering how to light an entire scene. 3 point lighting is great for converstation shots but how do you light scenes with people do actions or a group of people talking around a table for example?
@modestykills you would need surrounding lights around the table for example and the lights should be properly set up so the persons face isn't too bright or too dark :D
Rent a generator to power your lights. It would cost you about 50 bucks/night. If you need to save money, try shooting next to some houses or something and ask the nice people if you can borrow their electricity - the use extension cords. (It would be a good idea to ask in advance so you don't stand there with no electricity). If you don't like these ideas, try shooting day for night.
Incandescent bulbs are not even balance properly to 3200 (tungsten) . I like the tip on the wiring the dimmer switch like mentioned before you should have mention the different intensity's cause a change in color temperature.
gels are becoming a thing of the past. still good to know but the adobe after effects its only a few simple clicks and you can get exactly the mood you want. (and im not implying you bootleg adobe after effects CS3...cause i didnt...*shifty eyes*) none the less good stuff to know.
After effects can do things to the whole image, but gels can help you give different treatments to the background and foreground, which is extremely difficult to do in post.
really wouldn't consider this to be advanced....still pretty basic.
Also, maybe these guys should watch a 4 minute video on chroma keying. NEVER USE A DV CAMERA with a 4:1:1 color sample rate to shoot green screens. You get bad outlines on the character just like in this video. Should have just shot him on a white background!
When using a dimmer switch you will probably have to re-white balance the camera because the color temp will change as the bulb dims . You can also purchase extension cords with dimmers built into them. Do a google search and you should be able find them pretty quickly. I found one for about $13
Instead of electric tape for the hand squeezer you should put it in an electric outlet box with strain reliefs. You can get this at any home center (Home Depot) This will never come apart and look very professional.
seriously, maybe im just realy tired. or did that make no sense to anyone else?
What was going on, they didnt explain the dimmer and how to build it like at all. but the examples made sense. too bad my cameras crap and doesnt have any good setting AKA white balence, mic input a good manual focus (its got one just not a good one)
ya i dont know, i thought it seemed too rushed and sorta unorganize, Honist oppinion, in some ways it was awsome in others i was so lost and i almost wanted to stop it
lol nice, I try and make movies, if you wanna see what i mean you can watch the movies on my site, they arn't awsome but iv learned alot. some of these project i find so pointless. I liked the mini jib, the lighting one, and the camera dolly but the props i dont realy ever see the point for some of them...lol later
thanks, having examples in the video is great, maybe you could pass in review amny existing shots and pass comments on them, tell us the problems you had and solutions you applied :)
That was so much closer to 4 minutes than the standard 6 minute videos. Great job. You were still over budget though. I think there should be a punishment for Steve when his videos are over 4 minutes, just like in BFX. Seriously though, great video. Really helpful!
correct me if i am wrong but isnt the daylight 5600K not 5000K?

it would have been helpful to mention that florescent light is 2800k and appears green.
And it's 5600k, not 5000k.
robgrauert87 2 years ago 3
Green flourescent light isnt 2800K thats more orange on the scale. Its more like 3500K but it depends on the specific tube.
