  • correct me if i am wrong but isnt the daylight 5600K not 5000K?

  • indy mogul is amazing

  • Why should I trust someone who can't successfully light a greenscreen?

  • Check out my channel Black & White Moments for filming and editing techniques as well!

  • well it was of great help to me

  • ur greenscreen sucked

  • The light from reflectors tends to be 3-4 stops less than the key that is the source. If you need a lower ratio you need to use a 2nd light for fill. You can feather it until you hit the desired ratio. Hint: use a meter in EV mode and ISO 100 to determine ratios as well as key level. Many cameras want at least 100 lux, and you are better off at 400 lux. Sekonic has a lux to EV conversion chart.

  • Oh god, none of this seems safe o.o I thought they were just going to show me where to put lights and such

  • Anyone remember these good old days? When Indy Mogul wasn't a sell-out?

  • @DizzyDuckMan yea now they get payed and there's new people and stuff... i liked it when Eric did it for fun- he wasn't like a pro or anything like that.

  • THX for idear with the dimmer

u can also buy for the power socked on amazon for 5 bugs

  • guys, you probably got electrocuted a few times...

  • But I like unsettling blue =\

  • Build a dimmer with a chance to electrocute myself? or buy one for 5 bucks? hum...

  • Cool video!

  • nice job at chroma keying.. when is that video?

  • 0:01

  • the lighting on dis video sucks....... croma keying was not correct.....

  • its not 5000k its 5200k

  • Film Riot rip off.

  • @maxxmurdochorror

lolwut filmriot came way after this

  • i really dont like how he speaks

  • @mc2equalzee I wholeheartedly agree.

  • @mc2equalzee There's no way I can watch Part Two (or any other subsequent part).

  • @mc2equalzee I agree.

  • @mc2equalzee Nobody does. Probably why he's not there, anymore.

  • @mc2equalzee

I like the way he speaks. It makes him sound terrible interesting altogether.

  • @mc2equalzee Yeah well I don't like how you speak - nobody's perfect

  • watch robert rodriguez's 10 minute film school. its on youtube and theres more than 1 version

  • isnt it 5600K for daylight color temperature not 5000K?

  • I know most of this... I learnt some really important bits tho, I used to struggle with windows cos they cast shadows on the side your shooting and there's that white balance issue... I wont now. I had my way of overcoming it, but it weren't as good!

  • "2 color temperatures"-holds up eight fingers.

    Ah that made me laugh.

  • Actually I thought it was immature and stupid.

  • I'll remember not to take green screen lessons from these guys.

  • No shit...That has to be one of the worst chroma keys I've seen on youtube. You almost have to try to make it look that bad. I've seen 9 year old kids do better.

    Ok.....I'm done.

  • It's actually deliberate, is surposed to give him a stylistic comic book look, The same effect is on the Indie Mogul logo but its harder to see because its already black.

  • I love how these guys are supposed to teach us how to light, yet their green screen and chroma keying is absolutely horrible. It's good to know that they can really light!

  • i luv indy mogul but isnt film riot better?

  • I like indy mogul more because it is much more simple and to the point but film riot works with after effects and not just organic effects.

  • 5000k? 5,000,000...

  • 5000k stands for 5000 kelvin, a unit that measures color temperature.

  • indoor tungsten light is 3200 kelvin and outdoor is 5600 kelvin

  • very cool

  • Everyone comes on youtube and explains 3 point lighting on a subject but I am really wondering how to light an entire scene. 3 point lighting is great for converstation shots but how do you light scenes with people do actions or a group of people talking around a table for example?

  • @modestykills you would need surrounding lights around the table for example and the lights should be properly set up so the persons face isn't too bright or too dark :D

  • @modestykills you set the whole place on fire :)

  • SUBSCRIBE TO INDY MOGLE!!!!!!

  • you spelt Mogul wrong but..........I AGREE!

  • YA! SUBSCRIBE

  • i miss four minute film school

  • cool one

  • Whats the best way to shoot an outdoor night scene without getting all the graininess. Any tips or tricks would be awesome. Thanks.

  • Rent a generator to power your lights. It would cost you about 50 bucks/night. If you need to save money, try shooting next to some houses or something and ask the nice people if you can borrow their electricity - the use extension cords. (It would be a good idea to ask in advance so you don't stand there with no electricity). If you don't like these ideas, try shooting day for night.

  • it would have been helpful to mention that florescent light is 2800k and appears green.

    And it's 5600k, not 5000k.

  • Green flourescent light isnt 2800K thats more orange on the scale. Its more like 3500K but it depends on the specific tube.

  • wondering if u can do some lighting demostrations

  • 60th

  • i like how he held up 8 fingers when he was talking about the 2 types of color temperatures.

  • I can't take this serious when the host is keyed out in a really poor manner !

  • i think that is supposed to be a joke

  • Much thanks!

  • Incandescent bulbs are not even balance properly to 3200 (tungsten) . I like the tip on the wiring the dimmer switch like mentioned before you should have mention the different intensity's cause a change in color temperature.

  • mmm, your keying turned into a garbage matte = not good!

  • DUDE!! Can u balance the music with the voice, its freekin loud! nearly blew my speakers on a damn youtube video. Indy is right!

  • gels are becoming a thing of the past. still good to know but the adobe after effects its only a few simple clicks and you can get exactly the mood you want. (and im not implying you bootleg adobe after effects CS3...cause i didnt...*shifty eyes*) none the less good stuff to know.

  • After effects can do things to the whole image, but gels can help you give different treatments to the background and foreground, which is extremely difficult to do in post.

  • really wouldn't consider this to be advanced....still pretty basic.

Also, maybe these guys should watch a 4 minute video on chroma keying. NEVER USE A DV CAMERA with a 4:1:1 color sample rate to shoot green screens. You get bad outlines on the character just like in this video. Should have just shot him on a white background!

  • your information is off - Diffused sources get softer as the source gets closer to the subject, not further away.

  • good stuff, thanks for elaborating on the colour temps and gels.

  • When using a dimmer switch you will probably have to re-white balance the camera because the color temp will change as the bulb dims . You can also purchase extension cords with dimmers built into them. Do a google search and you should be able find them pretty quickly. I found one for about $13

  • I'm defiantly going to make or buy a dimmer switch to try and recreate some of the "paperwork scenes" from Hot Fuzz in an upcoming movie.

  • It's still 4 minute film school doofs. 4 minutes on one topic, 4 on another. Stop being so nit-picky.

  • 8 minute film school?

  • Instead of electric tape for the hand squeezer you should put it in an electric outlet box with strain reliefs. You can get this at any home center (Home Depot) This will never come apart and look very professional.

  • this ep wasnt too great... part two seems like it may be more helpful :\

  • GAH!!! I have one more chance to see him. (at 12:30, I missed the other two.)

  • i saw you on TV!!!

  • who's glenn Beck? Is he related to Erik Beck?????

  • another kickass vid courtesy of indymogul!

  • Erik on TV!

Good advices, didn't know the light had so much to say:P

  • blah blah blah blah blah...

  • cheers again!

  • eriks gonna be on t.v!

  • It seems this episode of Indy Mogul isn't as well received as the past ones.

  • they forgot the "Next New Network" clip!

  • seriously, maybe im just realy tired. or did that make no sense to anyone else?

What was going on, they didnt explain the dimmer and how to build it like at all. but the examples made sense. too bad my cameras crap and doesnt have any good setting AKA white balence, mic input a good manual focus (its got one just not a good one)

ya i dont know, i thought it seemed too rushed and sorta unorganize, Honist oppinion, in some ways it was awsome in others i was so lost and i almost wanted to stop it

  • I never understand these things anyways.

I don't make movies, I just find it interesting

to watch the things they make.

  • lol nice, I try and make movies, if you wanna see what i mean you can watch the movies on my site, they arn't awsome but iv learned alot. some of these project i find so pointless. I liked the mini jib, the lighting one, and the camera dolly but the props i dont realy ever see the point for some of them...lol later

  • thanks, having examples in the video is great, maybe you could pass in review amny existing shots and pass comments on them, tell us the problems you had and solutions you applied :)

  • I commented earlier (I was first comment) but the video went into private and my comment was deleted.

    But I digress

Thank you for the helpful information. I really needed the advice.

  • i want to control the sun hahahahahahahahahahah

  • Lol @ you need 8 minute film school.

  • I love how I can see an outline around Steve. Sucky green screen!

  • They've already done lights.

  • nothings better than practice

  • Where do I get gels? What are gels exactly? Mylar films?

  • nice

  • it's not really a 4 minute film school if it's over 2 episodes :\

  • Cool, I didn't know about overcast days being good for filming.

  • I believe you mean 5600K, not 5000K. Daylight standard is 5600.

  • He was talking about light bulbs. A lot of the full spectrum light bulbs are at 5000k.

  • That was so much closer to 4 minutes than the standard 6 minute videos. Great job. You were still over budget though. I think there should be a punishment for Steve when his videos are over 4 minutes, just like in BFX. Seriously though, great video. Really helpful!

  • this has probly been the most informative vid from Indy.

  • That was cool! Will you speak about the positioning of lights?

  • I believe in aluminum,,

sorry,, I just had to say that.

  • 4th comment on indy mogul wat?

  • cool ive never gotten this close to the beggining post of one of their videos

  • that was seriously awesome

  • and thanks steve
