There are some Blues elements at times in the embrace, body movement, and mostly in the call response. We aren't really connecting with the song, as we are trying to connect with one another, mimicking and playing with movement together. If I could change the title I would have years ago, but then I would have never posted it in the first place and some people have clearly enjoyed it, so I suppose it's for the best.
This was the first day I met Lucky Skillen. After a lesson Mihai asked to record us dancing a song. This is a beautiful tradition Blues song, however we are clearly dancing Fusion. You all picked up on the Lindy, WCS, Salsa, Tango aspects of our interaction. We were dancing the patterns we found in common to connect to each other with. It is very explorative and I never expected 45,000 people to see it. It was not meant to be a performance or an example of what Blues is
If anyone is still wondering about the tune, it's Souvenirs of New Orleans by Sydney Bechet, Bechet was a truly amazing person. A classically trained musician who made the choice to stop reading music!
This is awesome, one of the better blues dance videos I've seen on the internet. I hope you post more of this stuff and that you keep dancing. You are both great dancers!:)

white people have to categorize everything, put it in a box and make it look as clinical as cleaning teeth. The originators, black folks, just danced to a groove. 80 years later, whites have made something so sexy and natural look like dancing to numbers.
"more natural" ?!?!?!? Are you kidding me?! What I am seeing here looks like some theater production. Don't get me wrong, I have done the blues, and know quite a few ladies that are extroardinary at it... but this dance, just like any other where you would like to dance with say.... someone else, you WILL establish some rhythm or beat to stick to. Also, like another post below, I couldn't help notice all the argentine tango in this number.

Growing up in a working class Black family anytime between 30s-70s, on Friday & Saturday nights you were privy to true and authentic blues/r&b/soul dancing by your parents and their friends. not this fad of the week production.
I see some irony here. You're accusing "white people" of making blues "by the numbers," but your chief complaint is that the people in this video are "doing it wrong."
In order for someone to be "doing it wrong" there needs to be a way to do it "right" and if there's a way to do it "right" then you've got a by-the-numbers chart of your own.
Also, I don't think you watched this vid to the end. They loosen up a lot in the final minutes.
It is a common misconception to believe people join Scientology because of the doctrine of Xenu. People actually come to Scientology hoping for increased intelligence, improved personality, and help in dealing with personal problems (as it advertises itself as a self-help philosophy). Later, if they had paid enough, they learn a system of beliefs based on science fiction stories, infestations of alien spirits and exploding volcanos.
I love blues dancing!, swing, lindy n latin too. The end made me giggle, I love it. After the song ends they both went back to the social personal bubble space mode, the overwhelmingly cultural appropriateness n rules. I love how blues dancing's all about intensity emotions and interaction with the body, how all that escapes the rules and boundaries. Then at the end (it's funny I've done this dozens of times) after an exotic dip you draw back and look like school kids again. ha ha
wow. this is excellent. finally a sexy blues dance on youtube. i've been looking for one to show possible recruits into the blues scene and this is it.

frankly honey, it looks more natural than west coast swing, cha-cha, or salsa, it doesn't have as definitive beats and steps as those dances do

So put up a vid, or shut up, son.
Living-room fusion doesn't get much better than this without charging for it.

my point, if they knew what they were doing and feeling it, they wouldn't have to wait until the end to "loosen" up.

This is awesome! It looks so much like argentine tango to me but with a different sensibility of movement.
rainslider 3 years ago
aye, there's a touch of Lindy in it too. Blues has a way of absorbing other dance styles.
karrakis 3 years ago
Very, very true. It can be made to incorporate just about any style.

I know, after their done, their like "guess we're done back to normal life!"
But I must admit that I find this a good thing, because otherwise the dancing would be a bit scary.

Sidney Bechet rules! He became very famous in the fifties in Hot Club de France. He was a remarkable and gifted soprano sax player as you can hear.
Tenderness6 4 years ago
His music is a beautiful thing, indeed! I don't suppose you know the name of this particular tune? I've searched in vain for many months now.
Mjjones54 3 years ago
Hi,
I suggest you write to the dansers themselves. I played several Bechet tunes in the past but I wasn't familiar with this one either.
Hope you will succeed in finding the name of this particular tune.
