I remember this launch, I was 14 at the time. It was originally supposed to be at 8:07 a.m. but the fog was so thick they waited a long time at T-9 to hold for the skies to clear. It was sunny and clearer bell at 9;57 am.- a 1 hour, 50 minute hold!!
I spent 2 days with Bob Springer during a customer promotion. Bob was on this mission. He is a true American Bronze Star Hero and a great down to earth guy. I you see this Bob, I wish you the best of everything- Norm
I was going to say before I read all the info, nice job editing in the 170 shot of main engine start and the helicopter shot at launch, not in the original footage. This was also the first time Lisa Malone did a launch and there was a big media deal about that since she was the first woman PAO.
Hard to believe it's been 20 years since this launch, I remember that morning. It was only the third since Challenger and the major networks covered it live. Delayed 1 hour 50 minutes form 8:07 by low, thick morning fog then about the clearest sunniest skies you could ask for.
Yes and also this was her first shuttle launch as the actual launch time PAO and the press had profiles of her as "the young woman from Alabama, only 27 years old (then), the first woman to announce a space shuttle launch" although she'd done Delta and Atlas launches since 1985. So it was noteworthy and they had separate news items just on her for her first one that day. Peter Jennings on ABC's live coverage even put her portrait on the screen during the last 3 minutes or so before launch.

I remember this one too...remember that Lisa Malone could not hide the excitement in her voice at SRB ignition. Good stuff!

No doubt...she was a bit of a rockstar during those early days of her PAO career with NASA. I thought she did a pretty decent job.
