  • this band, I thought they were black, like the O'Kaysions.

  • it's obvious these guys hung with black folks......the lead singer can dance...the bass player sounds like a motown master. Great group!!

  • @Shield1751 Thank alot, you are right. I was raised in the inner city of Detroit and I've always loved blues and soul music. Jerry Plunk, lead singer/drummer of the Flaming Ember

  • @1funkyplunk Jerry I always enjoyed your voice. We used to spin "Mind, Body & Soul" on Philly radio it was a big Philadelphia & Delaware valley radio hit. I played both these songs quite a bit on my air show when I worked for 1380 WAMS oldies in Wilmington, DE 20 & 21 yrs ago. M,B & S always put me in mind of Levi Stubbs (RIP) which aint bad company. Thanks for the great "Rock & Soul" and I too thought you guys and the O'Kaysions were black as well as The Rascals & Soul Survivors

  • I used to have this record. Hope I still do. It was s good one. The Joey Ramone guy looks like someone from a garage rock group. Great stuff here.

  • Omg! Is that Joey ramone on bass?!!!! (Jk)!

  • flaming ember is a

    white super group from detroit

  • @UAINTFUNEisBACK First - Sorry to hear your dad passed away. I saw your dad, Jack Fisher, only twice. He came to the club where we were playing.and sat in once, but didn't sing. Second - I don't know who gave you the info about your dad singing on our records, but whoever it was, is very misinformed or is lying. Why anyone would fabricate this story is beyond me. Friends and fans know better. from Jerry Plunk - lead singer/drummer of the Flaming Ember

  • @1funkyplunk hey jerry plunk...i remember your song as a kid abt 6 years old .. and i must say baby you sounded black and to see you your sooo handsme here ..im an african american chick but id do you in a heartbeat..and you should have kept doing r&b ....music . im gonmg to write to vh1 where are they now...to profile you... man i really thought you were a brother with a afro.....

  • @UAINTFUNEisBACK Jerry and Julie are my friends and I was at there house twice in 2008 and beleive me this is Jerry singing , he sang a few songs and he sounds the same as 40 years ago. So that means shu........ Rock from Montreal.

  • @RockPicard Hey Rock - how are you doing?

  • @RockPicard No man, that ain't Jerry, that's his wife Plunkette LOL

  • @RockPicard U TELL YOU BOY JERRY ..DAMM HE WAS A FINE AS WHITE BOY... I'D LOVED TO BACK THAT ASS UP TO HIM BACK IN THE DAY ... DAMMMM VANILLA SPICE AND SOUL...WHY I WAS BORN IN 1969 INSTEAD OF EARLIER ID SURE LET HIM HIT THIS AND WAX THAT ASS ON THE REAL

  • @RockPicard It's always so good to hear about a successful musician or singer who is still here and continue to have their talent.

Isn't it amazing that we were enjoying this song 40 years ago and it still kicks butt?

  • @RockPicard One of my top 10 all time favorites! Is Jerry still alive? Would love to hear him sing one more time!!!

  • I knew the lead guitar player Joe Sladich. He was the very best and I never saw anyone who was better. He had very fast fingers and played very well. I will miss all the good times we had when I helped him and his brother hot rod the 1949 Pontiac and ran it at good ole Detroit Dragway. God, I miss the good old days.........if your out there Joe, let me know brother......dolamiti@comcast.net (Ron Mucci)

  • @UAINTFUNEisBACK Rarely did anyone sing live back then. It is, however, Jerry's voice, and if he really WAS your dad, you'd know that.

  • @UAINTFUNEisBACK FINE, but why did you wait for your dad to die to open your big mouth , now try to answer that, don't take to long (LOL).??????????

  • @RockPicard Hey dipshit, Some of us have lives and careers... And i would advise u to keep it friendly brother. I am the kinda guy to track u down and have u shittin your diaper for that kinda comment...So be careful.

  • @UAINTFUNEisBACK Yeah man be careful LOL

He's gonna search yew out LOL

Hey searching dude, you ain't gonna do that unless youre really angry and that dopus should not ruin your day. So don't deploy the cyber choppers, the m-16s, the ak-s and please don't fret. Get a nice hot cuppa tea and chill out, brother. These motherfuckers ain't wortth a dime of your time!

    Remember

  • Great tune! On the Hot Wax label.

The Flaming Ember had three great tunes, and were produced by Eddie and Brian Holland and LaMont Dozier.

  • Jerry where's the flood? Usually when you're behind the drums no one sees how short your pants are...hehehe!

  • @drifter1dc Pretty funny...

  • 5 white guys with rhythm....

if you don't move to this song.....

    you have NO rhythm

  • @UAINTFUNEisBACK I did google your dad and couldn't find him anywhere. It is Jerry Plunk singing ALL the Flaming Ember songs - he actually sounds the same today as he did back then. I should know - he's my husband. So, what other bands did your dad say he made famous? The Beatles? The Supremes? Just curious. I'm sure your dad was a talented man - he just didn't have anything to do with the Flaming Ember.

  • His hair doesn't move.

  • i was a teenager when this first came out, i loved it then and i still love it now, a classic

  • Absolutely LOVE THIS!!!!

  • Dude...wanted to run away to Cali back then....

  • @navet1953 I STILL want to run away to Cali!

  • Great to see these guys. Never knew what they looked like. This song, and "Mind Body and Soul" should both have been Number One songs. They should still be played today.

  • "and my mind catches a ride, on the Westbound Number Nine.............."

  • COOL! GOT THIS 45.SONG WRITTEN BY RON DUNBAR .

  • What are you all talking about????? The drummer is Jerry Plunk, he's the lead singer on the video ,they put that drummer for the video his name is Lenny. By the way this is a record playing.

  • Sorry to hear about your dad.RIP.They were a really good group.

  • That's my Papa on the drums. RIP Larry Gregg April 20, 2010. I will miss you. Love you always

  • @ynotquilt67 Great drumming...you should be proud

  • @ynotquilt67 I'm very sorry to hear about your father's passing . He will be remembered everytime this song is played and I'll try to request this song on the Rock & roll Oldies show on KOOL 96.5 FM in Idaho and dedicate this song to his memory . He's another bright star in Rock & Roll Heaven , may your dad rest in peace .

  • I love this song although my favorite song these guys did was a song called "I'am not My Brother's Keeper" released just after this song in fall of 1970.

  • Great record. Great memories. Dumbass comments about how they are dress amaze me. This was late 60's and bell bottoms and love beads were the shit back in the day.

  • @DetroitLives313 yes it was the go back then, and what a go go time man !!!!!!

  • Yeah BABYYYYY!!! Highwater Bellbottoms!! Only in the 60s.

  • I am so glad you posted this. I had no idea what Flaming Ember looked like.

  • I didn't know what they looked like either. I always thought Flaming Ember was a black group (O:

  • The piano player in this band is my great uncle. Bill Ellis. Wow, this was a great band back in the day :D

  • Oh! my, this is my favorite of the late 60's, got a lot of new releases from the Hot Wax company at Cadillac Towers(I think), being in Sweden it was HUGE at that time, but never seen this video before, is it possible to download?

    Johnny

  • My mind catches a ride everytime I

hear this tune. Lead singer's bell-

bottoms need about a foot more of

    material, though.

  • Great song, awesome lyrics!

  • JP IS REALLY BELTING THIS OUT ALWAYS LOVED THIS SONG, BRINGS BACK GOOD AND SAD MEMORIES ... jERRY SURE HOPE YOUR STILL MAKING MUSIC! DO THEY HAVE ANY CD'S OUT? DOES ANYONE KNOW?

  • Yes, they have the Ric-Tic years on disc now, and there are other compilations as well. I'd have to check to see what all they've released.I've got most of their cuts from then 'til now. Jerry is still making great music! A really good album is Soul for the Prevention of Disease. Jerry is one of my best friends and one of the best ever!!!

  • thanks for the info on FE can i buy that CD on amazon or someplace, do you know?

  • flatout

Do you play music too? i was a teenager in the 60's and i still love them beads, Don't care what anybody else says........... but that was a time of pure music for me!

thats when music was at its best!!!

I got kids in their early 30's and mid 30's and they were exposed to that music but when they got older MTV came along. and it has not been the same since.....go figure :)

  • When Holland~Dozier~Holland left Motown and formed 2 labels: Hot Wax (distributed by Buddah) & Invictus (distributed by Capitol) they played two cool tricks ;-) Listen carefully to Westbound #9; you'll hear the feel of The Four Tops "I Can't Help Myself" in the rhythm. More so Chaimen of the Board's "Give Me Just A Little More Time" was a Four Tops tune-all-the way! Freda Payne's Invictus hit "Band of Gold" had Supremes written all over it.

  • @RecordsOrama Good observations!

  • Unfortunately a lot of the Flaming Ember studio recordings feature the Funk Brothers playing rhythm. I'm not sure which tracks actually have the Flaming Ember band playing and which don't, but you can hear Jack Ashford's distinctive tambourine on many tracks including this one.

  • There is no tambourine on this track.

  • Sounds a bit like Mitch Ryder you think?

  • wonder if berry gordy was racist lol when I listened to this song in the 70's always thought they were black but this old southern white boy loves r&b motown soul I think that is why I love beach music today

  • One of my favorite songs back then and still is.Jerry sure had a voice.FE was underrated and underplayed.Ive got the 45 on my jukebox and play it regularly. Thanks for sharing!

  • I grew up near jerry plunk and when they were making music i was lucky enuff to be able to see these guys in person at the clubs around the detroit area....great band and I always loved this song jerry....it still kicks even today !...just heard it again the other nite on TV...70 hits show...

  • RecordsOrama thanks for sharing the piece of music history...Tuggle thanks for posting the song!

  • Comment removed

  • An interesting side note about Flaming Ember:

When Berry Gordy's Motown Records bought out another Detroit company, Golden World/Ric-Tic Records, Motown took Edwin Starr and others but not Ric-Tic's Flaming Ember.

  • And why do you think that was?????

  • When Holland/Dozier/Holland left Motown amid heated lawsuits they formed Invictus & Hot Wax Records. The Flaming Ember, Honey Cone, Freda Payne & Chairmen of the Board were their most successful post-Motown productions.

  • good song sung from his SOUL...I always thought this group was black...always loved the song...great story song...

  • I thought they were black too until I saw this vid just now. I had the 45 of this & the 45 of their song Mind Body & Soul. Both great songs.

  • i like this song but i love the song sunshine. i also love my jer plunk and julie. my prayers are with them everyday. jerry is a great guy. they dont come much better. have known jerry and julie for 25+ years. just now hearing his music. wonderful voice. great band.

  • Was this on the motown label?

  • I think it was the Hot waxx label.

  • Oh, damn, all this time I thought they were a black group. Damn, damn, damn, I can't trust one of my senses. Cool, cool music!

  • Great song and outstanding video cut. Only heard this song when WPGR Phila. PA was spinning oldies and I was spending lots of money on big high power radios to pull them in up in Brooklyn, NY. Love it!

  • Anyone know if this vid is from the old Swingin time show?

  • If your thinking the show Swingtime from Windsor Ont. probably not. When CKLW was bought out by CBC, virtually all the archives were destroyed, however, many films from the archives were stolen by employees who worked for CKLW at the time. So.... who knows?

  • Nope ...it was 'Upbeat'

  • Dig those pants.

  • Skinny bell bottom floods! lol!!

  • I thought it was a black soloist like Wilson Pickett (and I'm Black) been looking for this song forever thanks

  • It happens lol.....Wilson Pickett had a song out around this time called Get Me Back on Time, Engine Number Nine.

  • it was in the mp3 binary newsgroups forever too before videos were available, yup where have you been !?

  • You have to excuse the love beads; after all, it was 1969. Definitely one of the best songs from that era.

This cat could really sing--I always thought FE was a black group (a high compliment.)

The group started out on the legendary Fortune label. Deetroit soul.

    Ps.

Deutsche Musik war die größte Scheiße

  • blue eyed soul - i thought that they were black

  • Great Beat, Easy To Dance To! I'll give it a 99, Dick!

  • one of the great songs of all time....great production....

  • I LOVE this song! I hadn't heard of the band before, but can't wait to check out more of their stuff. Where were they from? Thanks for posting this video.

  • Detroit .

  • I like the beads. I like the outfit, that's when men wore clothes cut so you could see their physque. Nowdays the bagger the clothes, the better. I haven't heard this since it was on the radio! Great~

  • Brilliant..loads of great memories. But 1 I cant get back...we used to hear it on a juke box late 60s/early 70s all I can remember is the line "and I prey to god above her she'll find another lover shes my cream puff. Weve been together a long long time, I know her ways and she knows mine,so be careful how you hold her and please dont ever scold her, shes my cream puff" anybody help ?

  • you probably now by now but its johnny nash, cream puff.

  • Yeah this the band my uncle played keyboards Bill Ellis sure brings back great memories

  • Blued Eyed Soul!!!!

  • @Specialdark23 REMEMBER DANCUNG TO THIS AGED 7 YEARS ...DID'NT KNOW THEY WERE WHITE

  • REMINDS ME OF ALL SAINTS BASKETBALL TEAM IN DETROIT BACK IN THE 60s. SLADISHS BROTHER PLAYED ON THOSE GREAT TEAMS..

  • a classic classic song

  • we use to this kill this song a classic

  • Thanks for posting this. One of my favs from the 70s. I had about six of their 45s. They played the clubs in Detroit but I wasn't old enough to get in to see them. Great to see this now. Check out Mind, Body, and Soul too. Great band. It still sounds great.

  • Well everybody I just listened to # 14,000 THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello to my very dear friend Mr. Jerry Plunk, lead singer of the Flaming Ember

    Rock.

  • I had this on Hot Wax Greatest Hits in the 70s ...great to see this video brilliant performance of a HDH production.

  • I picked up the exact 7" today which prompted me to look for this vid. Top class.

  • Yeee-Hayyy!! "Blue-eyed soul", amongst the finest (check out Stevie Winwood, of course). Thanks for making this available to society at large (since the gigantosaurus record industry is doing such a lousy job of it---they're too busy promoting corporate commercials & going after the downloadin' burger flippers). I'm also a Marvin Gaye, Billy Stewart, Smokey Robinson, Little Anthony, Temptations, Four Tops, Righteous Brothers, Rare Earth, etc., fan...

  • No rock n Roll like Detroit rock n roll!

  • Neither did I!! Look like a bunch of hippies from the Summer of Love! White guys singing this? When it first came out in 1970 I thought it was another Tamla copy. Great song! Brings back tons of memories. Thanks for posting!

  • Very distinctive voice...really liked them back then...

  • did these guys ever tour on national basis, does anyone recall----I recall mind body and soul hit big I think when I first hit college late sixties, i think.

  • I thought that this was their first hit, but then, again, I thought that they were a black group.

  • They sure did!

  • This is such a great soul song, on par with anything Motown put out. Great video. Thanks for posting!

  • Foxolita, you are right.White kids back then like The Young Rascals,The Animals and Dusty Springfield had true love and respect for Black culture. Most of the so called wiggers believe the stereotypes that Blacks are a bunch of uneducated ruffians. They have a very superficial perspective.

  • Lulu kicked anus...

  • anything that the great holland dozier holland wrote was great, i guess we don't have to be reminded of that!!

  • Wonderful work, hometown brothers!

  • NICE TUNE J

  • Thanks for sharing this one w/ me jameycruz...it was indeed a classic rock & roll joint,w/ some ooh-wee dynamite lyrics...I remembered them like it was yesterday.A verrrrrrrry good post Tuggle..."Thanks"

  • Great Hollnd-Dozier-Holland song.Great singing.

  • I can't believe this is a WHITE group! Not only the voice but the theme and lyrics are most defintely on a "black" flavor. Oh,well, props to them anyway. They rock with true soul.

  • at that time , there were a lot of white/black songs like this. it was great and should be that way now. suppose some will argue that it is with all the, sorry, i don't know another word, wiggers, with the rap. it's not the same at all. i really meant no offence by that.

  • GROOVAY!!!! Sure, it's outta sync half-way thru but fun to watch - what's up with the Joey Ramone look-alike on guitar? (the fella on the right)...rock ON!! - Rob B-)

  • What do you mean what's with the guitar player? That's Joe Sladich a fantastic guitar player and singer, to mention Joey Ramone in the same sentence as Joe Sladich is a crime! You don't know what you think you know Rob! RIP Joe, we love ya man!!

  • second, you can hear clearly in this song rock stems from the bleus-rock which stems from the soul. If you just imagine all the rockers tryin to imitate black-soulvoices. you get the idea.

  • LemonAndYoghurt truer words never spoken.

  • the early motown/soul realy comes through this rock song doesnt it?

did dozier/holland had something to do with writin this song?

  • Edythe Wayne, Ronald Dunbar & Daphne Dumas are the writers. The publisher is Gold Forever Music, Inc. which Eddie Holland formed after leaving Motown.

  • Edythe Wayne aka Holland-Dozier-Holland

  • lemon-i think this maybe on Hot Wax label out of Detroit-it was Brian Holland-label--I used to have this, believe this video is off "Rockin Robin" Seymore show-"swingin time" Gino if your in the house help me out?

  • I looked so hard for this song and knew I'd find it. I have the 45 from years ago and wow. Thanks for posting this great song. Brings back memories.

  • They were on the same label at one point with the Reflections (Just Like Romeo & Juliet) and The Shades Of Blue (Oh How Happy)....

  • now thats someone with some true top forty(40) useful knowledge; do you recall the label most assoc. with the Turtles????

  • White Whale Records.

  • Be honest, if you didn't know differently you would swear this was a black guy singing.

Great soulful voice, thanks for uploading!

  • naw, i coul dhear it. but it sounds very very nice. a great song.

  • My man sure sounds like he knows what time it is! And he can chime to boot! I do not believe I'd dare broach the subject that his bells were too high. Nooo, I'm thinkin' he'd just park his Stacy Adams where the Sun don't shine! This tall lanky boy looks like he could sling some serious skin!

  • Kodiak...can I ask where are you from ?

  • We'll probably never see this kind of music ever again, alas. But I like to reminisce anyway. I remember when I was a very young boy in late 60's early 70's my much older sister would have dance parties in our basement on weekends. I remember a lot of these records in the way I used to hear them- coming up through my bedroom floor!

  • THANK YOU...had this stolen from my collection years ago, thought I would never hear it again.

  • wonderful

  • pants are far too short indeed; great necklace; sitting on the bank of what creek????

  • I really like this song.

  • I have been trying to hear this song for 40 years. Like the righteous brothers, I have always thought of this group was black. I am 58 years old and this is the first time I have ever seen this group. They are beautiful

and so is this song. Thank you for posting it.

    Leon, from Birmingham, Al

  • They got some pretty good songs dont they?

I mostly like black and old funk music. I like this.

  • Blue-eyed Soul...

  • I a Detroiter!! my copy is all worn out. I want another one. I would dance to till my feet were worn out!! Summer of 1970 i was 14. can anyone help me. geri in St. clair shores

  • hav,nt heard this in over 35 years , fantastic!!!!!!!!! always thought they were a black soul band, did,nt hit in britain so would'nt have known better, all time favourite, big big up to "tuggle" 4 posting , thank you man!!!!!!!!!

  • Hey Jerry! Remember the "cut" the make-up artist put on Jim's forehead in Chicago. How about New Years Eve at Mary Wilsons. Scary! I wish more people could hear you guys live! Gary Norris

  • Stand by Gary, you might just get your wish!! Right Jerry!!!

  • Hi Jerry!

This is Rock. We don't know eachother but this song was always one of my favorite songs. If people say that you were a black group, I always knew otherwise.

I wish I could have your amazing voice!

If you wrote back, it would make my day!

    All the best,

    Rock from Quebec

  • Hey Rock - thanks for the compliments. I've sent you an email with my address on it. Look forward to hearing from you.

    God Bless,

    Jerry Plunk
