If you care to look, you will see that the dog grabs the ball up every time the owner makes a move towards it. If you ever actually had a dog, you would know that all dogs do that - it's a power-play for them. The dog doesn't want the owner to get the ball - not even to throw it for him.

I bet this little JRT's owner has tossed the ball plenty of times. I mean they did have a ball with them and maybe planned a trip to the steps so it could play.

Our terrier/chihuahua mix does this in the house. She pushes her ball down the steps and it rolls down the hall and back up she goes with it. Sometimes when we try to throw the ball for her she takes it to the steps herself and doesn't want us to play.

While it is adorable that the dog runs down the steps and manages to perfectly catch the ball, every single time...It's also very sad. He wants his owner to play with him. He's whining, and looking up at him, but the guy's not playing. What the dog is ACTUALLY doing is showing it's owner HOW he wants to play. The yelping, staring and body language is 'asking' and to attract attention. My Jack Russell does exactly the same and 'asks' for many other things too. Shame that 99% of humans aren't as intelligent.

as bad as i feel for this dog the way he's crying to play lol it Is clever how he ADJUSTS the ball to the EXACT speed to hit it down the stairs so he can catch it properly. Note at 0:40 he hits it once, realizes he hit it too hard, and slows it down before it falls. Pretty smart dog in my opinion.
