The black stuff that comes out of the colossi? It's the spirit leaving the body essentially. When it hits Wander it's the spirit of that colossi invading Wander's body. The reason behind why this happens is divided in two: it makes him stronger in order to face the next colossi and because of the ending which I will not spoil for anyone who does not know of it...who lives under a rock.

@harmonyXsuzukaze The first Xbox was a much better system. It had great titles. Plenty of exclusives. The system always pushed it's graphics capability. And, all the games were fun and enticing. But, unfortunately... The system only had a 5 year run. Microsoft discontinued it due to the fact the graphics were impressive enough that the 360's graphics capability would not look like much of a leap, and the 360 could suffer in sales. Microsoft rushed the 360 out to get ahead of PS3.

@JaywuzH3R3 Okay for those needing to know the plot: The Wanderer wants to save the soul of the lady - Dormin (the god) can do this if The Wanderer kills the colossi & steals their souls for Dormin. The strings coming from them after death are their souls, which explains the change of The Wanderer's appearance. The figures standing around The Wanderer & the doves around the woman increase as you kill the colossi. At the end it will be revealed why Dormin is forcing you to steal the souls. =]
