I clicked on Volume control (left click - up and right) to adjust sound - clicked Properties - Input tab - USB 2.0 Camera mono on Ubuntu (SuperOS 10.04 LTS)
Acer Aspire with Intex IT-305wc USB cam (very cheap, but works well with Linux)
In earlier Ubuntu versions than Hardy Heron sound on Acer must be solved in console
1. sudo apt-get linux-backports-modules-generic
2. sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf Linux rules!
