It doesn't come as a surprise to me that people with HIV commit suicide. If i had HIV i would most definitely commit suicide. No, I'm not joking, i really would. I remember i once had gonorrhea, and was freaking out. Luckily Gonorrhea is a bacterial infection that can easily be cured with anti-biotics. HIV on the other hand is a life-wrecking incurable disease.

Normally, if a person is on ARVs and goes off them, it increases the risk and speed at which their HIV infection will progress to clinical AIDS, opportunistic infections, and death.

I never thought about it....The concept of Chronic suicide. I work with many patients who are HIV positive and I am often there the moment they are told they are HIV positive for the first time. It is such an intimate and often intense thing. I wish I were more effective with my counsel but sometimes I feel that a silent support is sometimes the more helpful in that moment.

Do remember that anyone who is contemplating suicide is almost my definition not in a rational state of mind, so what's obvious to you and me (suicide is not the right answer) may not be obvious at all to a person who is in a deep depression. That's part of why depression is so dangerous: it distorts thinking.

However, you also have no proof that videos and/or moral suasion are guaranteed to fail. We have evidence that the videos are being effective for suicide prevention from the cases where suicidal people have contacted us and then gotten help instead of harming themselves.

I have been HIV+ co-infected with chronic hepatitis for over 20 years approximately. Despite having no special diet and not following a particularly healthy lifestyle, I have never been ill and remain happy and active in life with a negative partner. I only started HAART 3 years ago and experienced no side-effects. I write this to spread a little positivity and light.

Hi Kengi - Cass doesn't claim to be a medical professional. He's providing his own viewpoint on the importance of diet, nutrition, and healthy lifestyle choices to managing HIV. He runs his own HIV peer support hotline and has counseled many away from suicide. Studies clearly show that people who have a smaller or no social support network are at higher risk of depression or suicide on average. But as you rightly note, having a support network doesn't guarantee a person won't kill themself.
If this person is for real, then I hope no one stops them. AIDS is a horrific disease. If you save someone against their will, then you as good as murder them.

There is an article in the newspaper (you can search it on google) about life expectancy w hiv... The prognosis for those who get it and take their medications and live a healthy life i.e. no smoking,,, is promising to say that they can live a life until their old age. IT is no longer a death sentence. Magic Johnson diagnosed since 1991, its 2009 now.. meds and treatment each year are getting better.

tyrexden: It is 2009. For a person to have been HIV+ for 30 years, they would have had to have been HIV+ in 1979. But there was no way to determine that a person was HIV+ in 1979; the syndrome wasn't recognized until 1981, and HIV wasn't isolated until 1983-4, after which the HIV blood test was developed. So although there may be some long-term non-progressors who were in fact first infected 30 years ago, there would be no way to verify that. I don't see how you can substantiate your claim.
More to the point, even if there really are "thousands" of long-term non-progressors, that's a tiny percentage out of the 58 million people who have died (25 million) of HIV/AIDS or are currently HIV+ (33 million). HIV/AIDS is a serious, potentially deadly condition. You're right that no one should ever commit suicide due to HIV (or for other reasons for that matter), but HIV/AIDS is not a "scam."
You should talk to a therapist who cares. (some of them actually do.) or a counselor in school, or a family friend, friend, or close family member. There is someone out there who really does care.
Don't kill yourself. Talk to a doctor ASAP about your feelings and be evaluated. Consider seeing a licensed professional mental health counselor of some kind. Talk to people you trust. Don't look at AIDs as a different case scenerio than any other reason why people commit suicide. Suicide is a natural route some people desire to take when they feel they feel they've been overwhelmed. My best friend commited suicide last summer after he lost his wife, children and mother in a care accident. I tried my best to pull him out of it, we all did. The sad thing about suicide is that you can't prevent it, only the individual with the problem can.
When they say the HAART allows HIV+ people to live "normal" lives, (aside from the complexity of the treatment and side effects) does it mean that they will have a normal life expectancy? Does it keep you from getting AIDS or does it only delay it?
This is Eric; I'm not a doctor. ARVs can't guarantee a normal life expectancy. Perfect or near-perfect adherence by the patient is critical to prevent HIV from developing resistance to the ARVs. Used as prescribed with perfect or near-perfect adherence, ARVs may be able to prevent HIV from ever progressing to clinical AIDS; with typical use, they delay it by years or decades.

If HIV is "nature's way of keeping the gay population down," why does most HIV transmission worldwide occur heterosexually? why are millions of babies infected in Africa through mother-to-child transmission? IV drug users? hemophiliacs before heat-treated Factor 8? Due to funding shortfalls, there are sometimes waiting periods, so sign up ASAP if you're HIV+ and you don't have health care coverage.

A disease is never a reason to commit suicide because life itself can be considered a disease to some. But why should suicide be demonized to begin with? No racial epithets please. There's no evidence that HIV was created by humans. It has been found in stored blood samples as far back as 1959. At that time, humans hadn't even discovered retroviruses, much less developed the technology to design a new one. Genetic studies provide evidence that it jumped to humans from a similar virus in primates. For some old stored samples, we even have the clinical history of patients who died of then-unexplained symptoms which in retrospect were clearly AIDS.

How about you (1) discuss your concerns with your doctor, (2) follow their instructions, (3) get counseling from a licensed mental health provider to help you deal with the stress or unhappiness you're feeling, and (4) see how things go for a while, talk with trusted friends and family, and not make any drastic and irreversible decisions? Just take life one day at a time. If you feel suicidal now, go to the nearest emergency room right away.

Normally, if a person is on ARVs and goes off them, it increases the risk and speed at which their HIV infection will progress to clinical AIDS, opportunistic infections, and death.

I never thought about it....The concept of Chronic suicide. I work with many patients who are HIV positive and I am often there the moment they are told they are HIV positive for the first time. It is such an intimate and often intense thing. I wish I were more effective with my counsel but sometimes I feel that a silent support is sometimes the more helpful in that moment.

If you are 30 years old or older and contract HIV you will die of old age as long as you take the necessary medications and go in for regular check ups. HIV is no longer a life sentence.

Do remember that anyone who is contemplating suicide is almost my definition not in a rational state of mind, so what's obvious to you and me (suicide is not the right answer) may not be obvious at all to a person who is in a deep depression. Hi Kengi - Cass doesn't claim to be a medical professional. He's providing his own viewpoint on the importance of diet, nutrition, and healthy lifestyle choices to managing HIV. He runs his own HIV peer support hotline and has counseled many away from suicide. Studies clearly show that people who have a smaller or no social support network are at higher risk of depression or suicide on average. But as you rightly note, having a support network doesn't guarantee a person won't kill themself.

There is an article in the newspaper (you can search it on google) about life expectancy w hiv... The prognosis for those who get it and take their medications and live a healthy life i.e. no smoking,,, is promising to say that they can live a life until their old age. tyrexden: It is 2009. For a person to have been HIV+ for 30 years, they would have had to have been HIV+ in 1979. But there was no way to determine that a person was HIV+ in 1979; the syndrome wasn't recognized until 1981, and HIV wasn't isolated until 1983-4, after which the HIV blood test was developed. So although there may be some long-term non-progressors who were in fact first infected 30 years ago, there would be no way to verify that. I don't see how you can substantiate your claim.

More to the point, even if there really are "thousands" of long-term non-progressors, that's a tiny percentage out of the 58 million people who have died (25 million) of HIV/AIDS or are currently HIV+ (33 million). HIV/AIDS is a serious, potentially deadly condition. You're right that no one should ever commit suicide due to HIV (or for other reasons for that matter), but HIV/AIDS is not a "scam."

Don't look at AIDs as a different case scenerio than any other reason why people commit suicide. Suicide is a natural route some people desire to take when they feel they feel they've been overwhelmed. My best friend commited suicide last summer after he lost his wife, children and mother in a care accident. I tried my best to pull him out of it, we all did. The sad thing about suicide is that you can't prevent it, only the individual with the problem can.

When they say the HAART allows HIV+ people to live "normal" lives, (aside from the complexity of the treatment and side effects) does it mean that they will have a normal life expectancy? Does it keep you from getting AIDS or does it only delay it?

This is Eric; I'm not a doctor. ARVs can't guarantee a normal life expectancy. Perfect or near-perfect adherence by the patient is critical to prevent HIV from developing resistance to the ARVs. Used as prescribed with perfect or near-perfect adherence, ARVs may be able to prevent HIV from ever progressing to clinical AIDS; with typical use, they delay it by years or decades.

If HIV is "nature's way of keeping the gay population down," why does most HIV transmission worldwide occur heterosexually? why are millions of babies infected in Africa through mother-to-child transmission? IV drug users? hemophiliacs before heat-treated Factor 8? It *is* accurate to say that HIV creates an environment where it's very dangerous to have promiscuous or unprotected sex--straight or gay--and many are infected by other means too.

A "natural means of limiting population" would indicate that as a sexually triggered control, gay people must be sexually reproducing. . .I'm having trouble with that concept as a whole.

you have more of a chance of getting AIDS from being gay or contracting it from someone who has already had sex with the same gender who was also infected.
most gay men have multiple sex partners. go to the gay bars and just hook up with guys they dont even know. and the guys can be infected also and not even know it. passing it to people and more people.
gay guys love to hook up. some of them even talk about having a couple of boyfriends at one time. sometimes even 4 or 5 and its discusting!

I get tired, really tired of the HAART meds (since 1996), the psych problems, the islolation, the requests/demands of others, dealing with this cruel, hostile world; and you are partially right. This life of mine was not worth living in the first place. The life-affirming alternatives are temporary stays. We are really not wanted, and some of us know it. Add HBV,HCV, - life is a ruins.

Without a doubt, getting health care coverage in the U.S. can be a problem. Anyone who is HIV+ in the U.S.: please be aware that you should be able to get free health care coverage through the Ryan White Care Act. Due to funding shortfalls, there are sometimes waiting periods, so sign up ASAP if you're HIV+ and you don't have health care coverage.

Anyone feeling suicidal should remember that they are unique and special and that they and their life has meaning, even in the darkest times. No, I'm not encouraging people who have legitimate feelings of suicide, especially people with HIV. A disease is never a reason to commit suicide because life itself can be considered a disease to some. But why should suicide be demonized to begin with? For many, suicide IS in fact a good alternative if someone is in the midst of horrific suffering, and those people should have the resources to die with dignity. And they shouldn't have religious freaks telling them otherwise.

No racial epithets please. There's no evidence that HIV was created by humans. It has been found in stored blood samples as far back as 1959. At that time, humans hadn't even discovered retroviruses, much less developed the technology to design a new one. Genetic studies provide evidence that it jumped to humans from a similar virus in primates. For some old stored samples, we even have the clinical history of patients who died of then-unexplained symptoms which in retrospect were clearly AIDS.

Briefly, genetic studies show HIV originates to about 1931, not to the 1950s; a sample of the original vaccine was found and shown not to have HIV; and macaque kidney cells, which can't culture HIV or SIV, were used during vaccine preparation. HIV-1/2 jumped from chimps/sooty mangabey monkeys respectively, likely due to blood-to-blood contact during hunting.

Cass, at the moment I'm raising 4 kids. One is a teenager. She's 16. I hope and pray that she is careful with her life, but I often wonder with the spread of HIV, what the odds are that one of my 4 kids may someday have HIV effect their lives in some way. But I come to realize, that HIV effects us all. We all worry, we all wonder, we all hope that we have raised our children with awareness.

How about you (1) discuss your concerns with your doctor, (2) follow their instructions, (3) get counseling from a licensed mental health provider to help you deal with the stress or unhappiness you're feeling, and (4) see how things go for a while, talk with trusted friends and family, and not make any drastic and irreversible decisions? Just take life one day at a time. If you feel suicidal now, go to the nearest emergency room right away.
