  • that cymbal. ahh it gives me the chills.

    great sounding drums.

  • Is it just me or can you hear the music in the background??

  • You know what JOEL... All plug-ins suck fucking rat dicks, ok?

  • i dont understand,, its a 360p video,, and no difference in audio quality

  • @stewardsultry Ive tried it on everything. The LA 2a sounds better IMO than this. I wish I could get a refund.

  • Your talking if fine, you're quiet when you show the changes, don't know why people have a problem wit it

  • I bought this plug and I never use it. Cant make anything sound better with it than it sounds without it. Theres better compressor plugs than this by far. Biggest waste of money Ive spent on a plug.

  • @alexmcginness well I can make everything sound better, maybe you need to learn how to use it

  • @Testiculatorz One mans garbage is another mans treasure.

  • Would be nice to see first how loud the original signal is. And maybe a HD version of this video for better audio quality.

  • UAD are just fantastic. Plug-ins and also the support teams. My music sounds more 'right' to me now. For that alone it's all worth it.

  • the ik multimedia is good but the waves puig child is better plusjack joseph puig helped develope it with waves. and he has one of the last ones on earth at oceanwat studios california. honestly its my favorite compressor

  • Blah blah blah - have you ever considered shutting up when playing the changes?

  • Compression is great. :D

    Benson and Tonic

    myspace/bensonandtonicproductions

  • i have an uad since 2007 and nowadays dont understand NOTHING yet about how hell works a compressor

  • @fuckableteam Fairchild is a tough one to learn, use the LA-2A plug in on the UAD instead. Two knobs, one to reduce the transients (peaks) of your sound, and another to make up the overall Gain (level) loss that comes from the Peak Reduction. It's simple; twist the right knob to get the compression you like, then twist the left knob to get the level of your compressed sound back up! Same with the LA-3A. After these, learn how to use the 1176LN/SE before the Fairchild.

  • well, i guess its better than nothing at all

  • Aww man, I wan't to hear the real thing not this.

  • I wish all of these guys would do one each with rock n' roll, instead of the ultradynamic jazz playing/singing. I wanna know what it sounds like when kicked by a gang of thugs.

If you can't hear the difference though you're either a novice growing or not well monitored. lol

You probably want what I want, crank them, and then crank them down. "this makes a veeery suuuubtle effect"; Screw subtle, I need muscle!

  • Well It sounds err smashed completely, im talking ruined, I cant see any use for it honestly unless you want something sounding like a bag of shit hence probably why they use subtle settings.

  • If you want a sound example of a specific loop send it and ill process it, mmmk. ;)

  • I have it on my UAD-1 and it sounds so great, it makes the song sounds like it's breathing! It's so tight and clear! YES, it's only the emulation, BUT i didn' t found a better VST Compressor Plug-in (which runs without an DSP card)!

To some people who don't hear the changes: you need a pair of good studio monitor speakers, THEN you will hear what i'm talking about! ;)

  • Sounds really nice, gonna look into these plugins (monitors people!)

  • Thanks for sharing!

  • its very subtle. the idea is to compress the peaks, so the whole thing can be louder and bigger sounding.

  • That's because you don't know what you're listening for...

  • You need to keep training your ears. I've been engineering for about 2 years now, and my ears are only marginally more sensitive than what they were before I started. The difference is there, believe me.

  • you're talking too much. Can't hear the changes.

  • @mixmastermonte Probably cant hear it anyway. Its youtube.

  • The overhead stereo Mic set would need to be compressed... Compression is your friend...

  • talking about you adisck

  • llusion friends, illusion!

  • is compressing drums something people SHOULD do ( i mean the ENTIRE drum set ) ??

I compress the snair and kick and thats it. if you compress the snair and kick, should you also compress the entire set AFTER the snair and kick are compressed ??

  • Depends what sound you want. If you want a punchy kick and snare sound and then compress the whole kit afterwards, i suppose that means the kick and snare would come out overcompressed in comparison to the rest of the kit (well, that's my theory anyway). I must say that i always compress the kit as a whole though.

  • you should compress the kick and snare always, but, when it comes to other sounds, such as the overheads etc, you should use a more subtle compression. try a ratio of 3:1 and try to compress the sound by -3dB. that will help to smooth any sudden changes in volume from the overheads etc. happy mixing

  • hahaha , the difference is almost noplace....

  • Actually there is a difference...It sounds about 10 times cleaner and has more character...sounds a lot more professional...maybe you need to turn ur speakers up a bit but this guy just gave yous ome useful information and you put it down to shit...fuck you man...

  • Good video and great plugin but there is a point at the end where I don't agree: if you always increase the output to match the max gain reduction value (3dB in this case) it will always sound louder due to the fact that compressed signal's average loudness has increased as well. 3dB reduction doesn't always require 3dB gain match, thats why I "hate" auto gain function on the compressors as they only follow a mathematical way of compensating the gain reduction..

  • damn, I didn't heard any difference except maybe a little sound from the background maybe a keyboard? shoot

  • The more you mix, the more your ears are trained to hear subtle differences. That is also why mixing takes years of practice! :-)

  • Agreed, but who are you mixing for: for mixing engineers or the average joe who listens to your work? Will he hear the difference?

    I doubt it.

  • dude the punters may not actively hear the difference but it makes a big impact on how people feel when listening to a recording, the playing may be great but people will not come back to stuff that has been mixed badly

  • Stimps, you are so right about that.

  • you can't find 'wally' until you know you're looking for him. when you know what you're listening for, you'll hear it.

  • this is definitely my go-to drum bus compressor. got a very convinving analog sound.

  • Crank it up dammit! lol

  • "setting 1 ist the fastest atteck and release

setting 2 is a bit slower attack and release

3 is even slower on attack and release

and 4 has even slower release"

    thank you! thank you man!

  • Is this used on rcording inputs or post tracking?

  • This is used post tracking on a drum bus.

  • Thanks.

  • @merrilltim who could he have a dry drum sound to compare if he had done it from the input?

  • It works better than lot of other plug compressors and behaves smilar to the real thing but lacks the "real" sound.

  • Cause let me guess:

You just HAPPEN to have a fairchild 670 laying around in your garage, right? Do you even realize how RARE a 670 is? This plug was sampled at Ocean Way Studios, which houses one of the last known models of the 670... Don't be such a nay-sayer dude, this plugin kicks your ass! lol

    -Joel

  • @jrhager84 i actually do own a real 670, bought at an estate sale, not working. it is now at "the hanger, sac, ca. being restored, where they also have a real one. the ua is very close, and ive seen the vid, on how they made it, i have to say, the ik mutimedia 670 is not bad either. this is a good vid, and thanks for taking your time to post it. i cant wait to get mine in working order. i have already had offers to buy it, in the condition it is in. payed 50 bucks. they didnt know what it was.

  • I'll give you 20 grand for your real one....

  • Oceanway Nashville has at least 3 of them. I saw them in the A,B,and C rooms there. I didn't view the D room. This plugin sounds pretty good IMHO. The real thing obviously sounds a lot better than this though. I would buy this plugin no question about it.

The other they have may be copies but our engineer there didn't specify. I've seen these in other studio as well. Sometimes we run through them without hitting them just for the warmth of the signal.

  • This is what pisses me off, if UAD is so good at what they do why didn't they emulate the warmth of the signal and any other distinctive characteristics? otherwise it sounds pretty much like the rest of the emulated compressors out there. And what's even worse I'm no engineer and I have to point this out so why does no one else seem to mention these things?

  • Dude, this is digital domain, you don't have tubes in there... The only thing that actually distinguishes between different algorithms (different plugins) is actually the amount of harmonic distortion that is fed into the signal, hence a free EQ plugin will get you to the same spot of a 400$ EQ plugin

  • Compressors are different though. Along with harmonic distortion, there is compression characteristics that make each compressor (even plugins) unique.

  • id rather more control of the release to keep from having pumping when i dont want it

  • The Fairchild 670 is Amazin!!!!!
