I sit and watch this video and it takes me back so far...I long for the days of the Church Studio and driving past the Woodward Park mansion. The few times I met Leon are great memories, glory days and ones I treasure. I know he wasn't too fond of ol' T Town, but we all grew up with him, like an older brother you didn't ever know. Seeing him play at the Paradise w/ Eddy & the Eclectics, and Gaylord S. playing darts, what a trip. Thanks Leon, you'll always be in our heads singing about life.
My older sister and of course brother brought my attention to this great guy. Concert for Bangela Desh and other ones I was too young to see. Today many of us can say: "long for the days" you are sooo right.
One of my all time fave pop tunes, first heard Carpenters version and love it. But also love Leon's version as less commercial as it is. And love Ray Charles version. No one mentions his version. The easy listening station in Houston I listened to years ago played it all the time. Was thinking it was released as a single as much as they played it.
Leon is THE ONE AND ONLY- magical shaman that he is- his voice still rocks even though it's a bit weaker than it was in '71! Nobody sings his songs like he does-NOBODY, NOHOW!!!
I think the Carpenter's version (and Karen's vocals) shows you the versatility of Leon's writing. That a bluesy song like this could be converted into to a sweet love ballad and become a hit is a demonstration of Leon's songwriting genius and Richard Carpenter's keen ability to select songs that Karen could turn in to mega-hits despite Leon's tunes being an odd musical resource for an act like the Carpenters. The Carpenters also recorded 2 other Russell tunes, "Superstar" and "Masquerade".
I know that Donny had a hit with this tune in the early 70s (before The Carpenters) and a lot of famous people covered it over the years like Elton, Aretha, Temptations, Whitney, Natalie, Cher, Willie Nelson to name just a few. But I always thought that the actual writer was Leon Russell.
He is the Man. I've been honored to see him since the '70s. Little did I know we'd share the same disease. MS. I'm sure he never imagined he'd ever have it nor
Oops! did I. (that's the hobbling part.) I would say Master Russell is a MUST SEE at Smith's Ole Bar on Wed. the 30th in Atlanta. And if we're lucky (and he doesn't have a prior engagement) maybe we can convince him to stick around for the 500 Songs for Kids. just a thought, haven't checked out his itinerary.
Leon is the best. He wrote the best songs and sang them like noone else. I like hearing Dylan's songs from Leon better than from Dylan. sorry to hear he's "hobbled". He's a genius.
Ray's version *IS* Leon's...Leon wrote it and he recorded THAT version too....this is just his live arrangement. He wings it. Whatever his mood. I've seen him more than once. He was WITH Ray when Ray did LEON'S Song. Leon wrote this song for Rita Coolidge when they were together.
yesssss seen him from coast to coast north and south love his music always!!!! last seen in pcola loved seen his daughter on stage with him!!! love ya man!!! Bo
Leon wrote the best love song ever written. I listen to it over and over. He is an incredible song writer, one that I shall never forget! Thanks Leon!
I think he's a real artist. I lived in Souhern California in the 1970's, and back then I rememeber turing on the AM radio to KRLA, and they would play this, and also Leon Russel singing "...back to the EYYY-land..." The airwaves were democratic back then.
when you look back in time from say 1960 to the present Leon has to be considered one of the greatest all around musical talents that ever walked on a stage or into a studio. Man , the stories that this man could tell. Keep on doing it Claude russell Bridges.Hank Wilson forever!!!
Leon is the man, and he does OWN this song!

This comment has received too many negative votes show
I disagree even though he penned the song the carpenters sung the song better and donny hathaway did it better then the both of them.

Leon did write it, and I think his version carries the most emotion for that reason.

Leon wrote the song in 1971 and Hathaway recorded it in 1972.
