  • Yeah, it's all fun and games until she runs the top down on the expensive golf clubs! :D

  • Volvo c70.

  • My dad had one of these when i was a little kid, and for me, it was amazing!

  • They did'nt sell that many, because the cost of that top, put the price of the car, int the category of Lincoln/Cadillac/Imperial - 5 to 6 large. A year's earnings for most workers back then. I understand that BMW is paying Ford royalties on the patents for that top. I wonder how the BMW "hardtop convertable" has sold?

  • Amazing how this thing is 10% more luxurious than any Chevy today and this sucker is almost 60 years old....why am I not surprised? -__-

  • American Innovation when we could do almost anything Cool.

  • Wow. That's kinda ..... noisy.

  • roflmao compared to todays models, the roof took forever to go on and off lol but shes a beauty!

  • Why the Hell can't we build shit like this nowadays?

  • how much would a car this year and convertible go for nowadays?

  • now THATS a car

  • I KNOW my wife & I would be doing the exact same thing, quibbling over who gets to play with the retractable top! LOL

  • That is so cool!

  • That's so funny. Did you hear him say, "But honey, this is a complicated machine, and women don't know anything about that..." That cracks me up.

  • Wow!!!! How much was that car in those times???? Its actually a nice car!

  • fords are awesome!! >:)

  • Exciting, as long as you don't need to haul anything in the trunk! Also, didn't alot of these motors go bad in these things leaving the top halfway closed?

  • Thanks for posting this; I remember a T-Bird that did this, and people in traffic would stop and watch the process. This was incredible tech for '57, a time when NOTHING stopped America's drive and imagination. HOW SAD to see where we are now...

  • idiot comments from people too young to remember these new....in 1957, this was a very technologically advanced car....not practical, but very innovative. you morons who brag about mercedes having this? ha! ford had it 30 years earlier in 1957

  • slow arse roof!!!

    mercedes sl is better

  • And Mercedes and Nissan both claim to have invented the Hardtop convertible in the last few years. BS Ford Invented it 53 years ago.

  • @sliderbox Peugeot launch it at 1939

  • @AZLAN210396 I would need to see proof of that .

  • @sliderbox Peugeot 401 eclipse

  • @arboldin You mean a real American car that got 12 MPG and might have lasted to 90,000 miles before being ready for the junkyard. There was a reason odometers in those days only went to 99.999.

  • hahahahahah the car sounded like it was gonna explode when that roof was going

  • @arboldin I agree but the prius is an awesome car!

  • This is a great ad - *****

  • That car would make a Mercedes SLK jealous..

  • What a great video and retro glimpse of simpler times. I "Love Lucy and Desi!"

  • I love Lucy

  • good ol sexism

  • Ford sponsored I Love Lucy for the 1957 season. GM came on as a sponsor for 1958-59 season and provided a 1958 Buick in one episode of the Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.

  • @lasuvidaboy Actually, General Motors provided two new Buicks for the Tijuana episode. A 1958 Special convertible and an ungodly expensive 5,000 pound Limited four door hardtop. I guess Ford was still the official Lucymobile when they filmed the one hour "uranium" episode in 1958. Lucy and Desi had a '58 Ford 1/2 ton Customcab p/u; Fred MacMurray had a 1957 Thunderbird (last of the T-Birds) and I don't know what the hell the Mertz's heap was.

  • The '57 Ford was a nice-looking car.

  • @fordude60 Agreed. The 1957 and the 1966 full size Galaxie 500s, XLs, 7ltrs, LTDs, and Country Squires were the prettiest in Ford's history.

  • i agree we junked all our engineering hard effort . however tesla , karma, and aptera are made here. not the best cars but not bad either

  • LOVED THE VIDEO! There were alot of reasons why Ford outsold Chevy in '57. Ford didn't sell alot of Skyliners, but the model gave the whole lineup drama and pizzazz , and Chevy couldn't match it. Thanks for posting!

  • 16 factory supercharged skyliners 13 acounted for ,including bobby darins. sales were good at 40000 in 57 1 custom ordered 57 ranchero factory supercharged, recently found.all in all 975 blown 57 ford most club sedans at 340 hp @

  • Thanks for the info, silverbird. Are you saying there was actually a retractable top Ranchero made? That would be something! Or did you just mean there was a supercharged Ranchero produced?

  • Only 20,766 Skyliners were produced in 1957. I have one my dad bought from the original owner in 1969.

  • I owned one of these. I bought it used in 1962 and had it for about three years.

  • Wow, I never knew Lucy and Desi did a commercial for this car. Ford must have been a sponsor for their tv show or must have paid them a lot. Did these cars ever leak when it rained?

  • juste des anglais sont ou nos quebecois man ?? american shit

  • show me something made south of the border ( in 1957 ) that was designed and made there that was any count

    besides a taco

  • can see why his marriage didn't last! haha. treats her like shit! Oh well, she got the last laugh. Fun car but I'd bet that steel hood was a pile of fun when it all went wrong. haha.

  • lucy looks good behind that wheel

  • not funtional yea, wait for the spare tire retrieveal . how ever my top never failed on level ground with a hot battery. a 100 amp alternator would have been nice

  • So... zero functional trunk space and if you were to actually put groceries in the trunk where the retractable roof is, they'll all end up on the road when it rises out or squished into a mess when the roof retracts and crushes them inside the trunk.

  • This was the first car I bought after I graduated from college-U.S.C. It was white a turquoise blue...Wish I still had it!

  • lol @ 48 sec

  • It really is motoring pleasure!

  • hey lucie im a beaner so lets get some zeniths & lifted.

  • And there's still plenty of room for Lucy's hat.

  • amazing that car would have been 8 meters long

  • And look at how many convertibles today have retractable hardtops - VW , Chrysler, GM . Lackluster sales, meaning a high price tag, and the commonly malfunctioning hydraulics killed this after 1959

  • guess again ' in mis 70's this was my first car.The hole deal was all electric ,and if the car was fairly level i never had any problems. however a 100 amp altinator would

    have been nice.

  • Het Gringo..No hydraulics on this car except the brakes. I have a restored on works fine they are electric motors that work the top.

  • Sorry Esa, hydraulic mechanisms operate the top

  • no the t birds from 58 to 1966 were hydro skyliner was all electric /screw drive ..

  • nope my dad had one new in 59 i was new too . that year. no hydrolics the top was screw driven 100 to one ratio the motor for top was about 6" in dia american bosh made 10 relays behinde the rear seat back all for each individual movement. verry rugged set up made at fern valley rd plant lousiville ky.

  • Where is the spare tire kept?

  • in the trunk

  • BRILLIANT DESIGN

  • It must have been great to live in the 50's

  • in 1957 great techonology
