Not only was this great graphics, but the voice overs by ernie anderson heightened the impact. Somewhere I have an old Rocky audio intro back when my TV band radio had a cassette recorder.
@bmasters1981 Compared to the other intros this is a step down to me.That ABC 70's and 80's intro is just spectacular to me.The one before this one on CBS seemed better and upbeat.I'm upbeat so I see things differently the world does. Most people are pessimists on YouTube. They can't wait to shoot someone down. You found it not to be lame God bless you,but for me it's step down from the others.Going to live my life*end transmission*
@dolphinbuc - ABC 70's and 80's intro is just spectacular to me.-
no kiddin dude, once the ABC Sunday Night Movie opening kicked off it was like "whoa! just drop everything cuz some real quality entertainments about to come on the tube"
Thanks, Mr. Teltzell, for letting us know who was responsible for creating one of the great network-TV openings of the past few decades. This was one of those that always made you feel like something big and exciting was going to be shown.
Love this excellent work, all that's missing is the dramatic voice over and audio clips they would insert of the feature movie. Somewhere amidst old audio cassettes I have the opening when they broadcast the original Rocky and it still rocks...great production and editing....oh where's that time machine to go back ....sigh*
From the first orchestral flourish accompanied by the smooth progression of CBS Didot DF type, computer enhanced with traveling light and shadow, the '80s-era CBS signature movie opening is a true classic that, sadly, has been relegated to graphics arts, computer animation and appreciation sites (like here at YouTube) for current and future generations to appreciate and enjoy.
I wish they went back to the movies format on CBS/ABC/NBC, even FOX. There's so much 'prime time' junk. That to me is what is missing from the NEtworks, the movies. Even local channels in my area TV 50, KBHK 44 that's now CW, KICU 36 don't air the movies no more. Bring back the movies.
I definitely agree with you, my friend. A lot of shows in this generation sucked. Nothing is ever good on TV anymore, and it makes me sick not to have any movies (with or without bumpers) on prime time. I wanted to know who killed the movies off of non-cable channels. Worse yet, there's no late-night movies anymore. The only local channel that has a late night movie would be late-Saturday night at 1 am on WCSH 6. Other than that, it's not good enough and it never will be.
I really miss hearing into music and graphics like this! Why they stopped it is beyond me. It made you want to stay at home and just watch what they were showing! If this kind of intro with the interesting graphics can make you feel like this even now it says something about the creative spirit and attitude of those times! I am glad I saw all this and experienced it when it came out and can appreciate its great value and history along with others on this site who feel the same way.
I am incredulous that all of these comment-writers seem to know and remember this graphic so well? Why? Because it is so LONG ago and so lost among so much TV graphics ephemera . How can I say that? My company made this move open. My name is Jay Teitzell and we did virtually every on-air promo graphic between 1979 and 1985. This particular open was designed by the great John LePrevost, Directed by David Bleiman and Produced by David and I. I guess I should get in touch with Mr. EYEONTV.
Hello Mr. Teitzell. I'm 32 years old and I've loved this theme song and intro and remember this very well since I was 8 years old back in 1984! My overall favorite one was the cartoon commercial for Saturday morning's on NBC back in the mid 1980's featuring a roller coaster and Casey Kasem saying "we'll return after these message's"! The theme song that NBC used for that commercial was probably my all time favorite! This is some good classic stuff man and truly and sadly a real lost art!
Just replying to your comment to ask-- are you on Facebook? The reason I ask is because I have a group there whose purpose is the appreciation of openings such as this CBS one, as well as those from the other networks, cable outlets and local stations. It's called "TV's Box Office." I thought that I'd let you know about that in case you were interested.
@Teitzell Hmmm... 1979-1985. That era encompassed this set of opens, plus its predecessor, the series with the film projector. Prior to that era, most of CBS's on-air promo graphics came from the late, legendary Lou Dorfsman. Dorfsman even created my all-time favorite, the 1972-84 "CBS Late Movie" title (particularly, the full 20-second version).
@Teitzell Mr. Teitzell: When I hear this song, it takes me back: fresh out of a bath and ready for bed, mom was going to tuck me in and then watch the movie. That was when I was six years old. Now, I appreciate the graphics and not only does the music take me back, like I said, but it sounds so "big" and exciting. I'm sure this preceeded the Wizard of Oz a few times as I grew up and that may be why I remember it so well. Cheers to you and your crew, Mr. Teitzell.
@Teitzell Good job to you and your crew. Love this intro and the nostalgia it brings. Why they stopped having grand intros for movie of the week is beyond me.They should use this on today!
This music, like so many great 'jingles' is a masterpiece in miniature in terms of the musical form and the expectations it sets up for the listener (and what it actually gives them) AABC(longer contrasting theme)Closing. Very clever.
Awesome and Brilliant. Perfect music and graphics. No other network could hold a candle in presentation effects that CBS could when it came to its movies and specials. Truly powerful and memorable.
I think it looks good enough the way it is. They're always looking for a new hook. Keeping it retro gives it character. Sorta like a "good things back in the day" campaign.
People think that today we have the best graphic's in television. I say it is a load of shit back in 1984 CBS could really kick ass with there movie opening's the music was energizing and the graphic's were pretty advanced for there time. CBS became Assholes somewhere in the mid 90's when they dropped this opening and network t.v became like it is today. Tired overhyped Bullshit.
I still think the 1985 version - done by PDI - was the best, but this is still pretty good. I like the original bumper themes here better than the reedits used with the later opens.
This was the best of all the CBS Movie videos ever made!!! The logo at the bottom-center of the screen with the blue mixed in worked just great!!! Dropping the logo later that decade was not the best choice. Great clips!
Now, that's how a movie intro should be done today.

One of the most sophisticated, well done versions of the The CBS Movie themes. Way ahead of it's time IMO.

My hat is off to you and all your colleagues who had anything to do with this intro. I so love the music and its upbeat rhythm and the graphics!
What does it matter how long ago it was?
The fact that so many people remember it should tell you that it made an impression on viewers!
