this is a beautiful song. the pictures suit the song. i just want to say that this song accurately portrays the fact that the government can tear families apart. i am sorry if i offend anyone it's just that my father was military, and several of my friends and family are or were military and i harbour a rather deep dislike for the government.
I heard this in the ending credits of some Revolutionary War reenactment movie thing in Social Studies class. I kind of liked that version better (and I had hear the Siuil a Ruin before and thought that they sounded pretty darn similar), but nice video.
....This song is so freken sad .....it makes me wanna cry ; '( My school only 5th and 6th graders are going to sing this song! a man my friend started to cry when my music teacher put this song on !!!!! next year my class is going to p[lay this song for Bank and Orchestra! Im pracising playing this song on my violen! :( ! Pooie~tianasing907~
5 of my friends and i sang this for a state competition last friday. only it was a different arrangement. it's such a sad song. only we didn't have the last verse with the red dress and bread part. we sounded really good.
I played this song almost ev'ryday since my Johnny ( Jak ) has gone to serve his country from last november, I cried for him all the time because of missin' him so much and was in worries of whatever would have happened to his life without a sign. I still hope he will be in a safe location and will soon come back to be surrounded by the love of his family again
I will always have you inside my heart, I promise you with my life

The song is the same thing as Siuil a ruin (Shul a roon).

Well not exactly the same, but similar. There are some differences in the tune and the lyrics.
snovymgodom 3 years ago
I meant both this and that are variations of the same folk tune that was going around in Ireland and England and brought to the colonies by settlers.

Apparently this song is similar to Siúil a rúin, the Irish song. It's worth a listen if you haven't heard it before.
It would be interesting to know exactly how this song sounded like during the times of the Revolution using the instruments available at the time.
