  • this is a beautiful song. the pictures suit the song. i just want to say that this song accurately portrays the fact that the government can tear families apart. i am sorry if i offend anyone it's just that my father was military, and several of my friends and family are or were military and i harbour a rather deep dislike for the government.

  • i love this song it so sad it wants me going in sevsers

  • My choir is doing this song!

  • Beautiful song.

  • I sing this every Veterns Day.

  • Peter, Paul and Mary also did a nice version of this song back in the earl 60s. It was titled Gone the Rainbow.

  • I heard this in the ending credits of some Revolutionary War reenactment movie thing in Social Studies class. I kind of liked that version better (and I had hear the Siuil a Ruin before and thought that they sounded pretty darn similar), but nice video.

  • @cozycute SAME!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks for posting, great version, touching.

  • I played this song almost ev'ryday since my Johnny ( Jak ) has gone to serve his country from last november, I cried for him all the time because of missin' him so much and was in worries of whatever would have happened to his life without a sign. I still hope he will be in a safe location and will soon come back to be surrounded by the love of his family again

I will always have you inside my heart, I promise you with my life

  • i sang something different

  • The song is the same thing as Siuil a ruin (Shul a roon).

  • Well not exactly the same, but similar. There are some differences in the tune and the lyrics.

  • I meant both this and that are variations of the same folk tune that was going around in Ireland and England and brought to the colonies by settlers.

  • Apparently this song is similar to Siúil a rúin, the Irish song. It's worth a listen if you haven't heard it before.

It would be interesting to know exactly how this song sounded like during the times of the Revolution using the instruments available at the time.
