How much does labor generally cost for something like this? I have an '05 Mustang with the 4.0 and would love to throw a 4.6 in there. (Already have the 8.8 rear, exhaust, suspension etc so I'm part of the way there)
@sabrom If it were a pinto or a 4 door sedan or something it would be a sleeper. A car that people would assume might have something done with it like a 2 door coupe that already had a v8 is not a sleeper at all. I have way more respect for people that take a shit car and put an engine in it like this, only they can truly be called a sleeper. Not only that you can spend half the money and build the 4.6 slap a whipple, kenne bell, or Roush TVS2300 on it and get twice the power. FAIL

The S197 Mustang is also alot lighter than the gt500, weight makes a big diffrence in acceleration (3400lbs vs 3900lbs). If u think about it, stick a 5.4L in there with a 6 speed, huge reer tires and a good set of gears and you would have a doomsday machine. I love Mustangs!! ;)

Are you guys on the East Coast? I have a supercharged v6 and I mean 270HP is nice and all, but 500+ is what I'm after. I've found a few wrecked GT500's around here lately and it's got me thinking.
i dont see the point in buying a gt and then doing an engine swap when you could buy a v6 and then put a big v8 in it but i guess if you all ready have the car just go ahead and do it that is a really nice car i want to do an engine swap one day its something that you can take pride in doing no matter what car it is or what engine it is
I'd rather see this in an older cheaper mustang like a 99-01. You can buy one for around 4-5k in good shape, just saw a gt500 engine and tranny on ebay for 9k. After car prepping for the engine, labor for the engine and tranny, you might come out with spending 20-25k including labor and vehicle price. Believe me I think a 99-04 mustang will fly faster with that motor than an 05+ because of the weight. Like you said, putting this in an 05 is about the same price as buying a used gt500.
@huntergluck 99-04 doesn't even come close to handleing like the S197 beside why doesn't a customer have the right to spend their money how they please... He didn't own a older mustang he owns a 2005, which the obvious choice was to put what made since in there a 5.4 Supercharged GT500 engine...and trans... We get a ton of calls and emails about people doing this conversion, but none about putting them in a 99-04 mustang..
@Big23DaddyProduction I'm just talking from a cost perspective. Sort of like buying a 99 GT and putting a 99 cobra engine in it. Lot of people do it and spend more or the same as buying a cobra. And as far as handling you won't get the same handling out of a GT compared to a cobra anyway but I always thought of handling as something people talk about but never use. I never do circle track racing, just drag racing and in drag racing you just want a lighter car. IRS is useless on a 1/4 mile track.

I put that kind of money in my 99 GT but looking back I regret not buying a cobra instead. I put 10k in engine parts, 4k, in tranny, not including labor (probably about 6k). So 20k plus the 7k I paid for the car I could've bought a Z06 for that price and my car is barely faster than one. I know better now because I own a C6 Z06 and it was worth every dollar unlike my stang.

@ferjgonz you would definately need a new wiring harness and ecu, engine mounts should be the same, and youd need a new transmission, driveshaft, rear axle, suspension and new wheels, brakes you should change but you dont necessarily have to but remember you have significantly more power and braking is an issue

Well its about 20 hours of work and they may need some other parts because of the engine difference. so say they charge $80 an hour in labor plus like $150 in parts would be $1750. that is if you ahd the ls1 or ls2 engine already to be swaped because ofcourse that would cost money and probs put it over 3500 dollars if u didnt have one
Yes we do...our tools and minds don't discriminate. A Mustang, SRT8 Charger, Camaro, Infinity, Import etc...the means of making horsepower doesn't change...all the same basic principles apply.

The new ECU must be programmed so it can communicate with the other modules in the car, like the GEM module for the cluster, Antitheft, etc. Then the keys must be re- programmed as well. If any of this is not done, the car won't start, or sometimes it will start initially then shut right off.
nothing.. try again over 560hp and 570 lbs ft tq... is nothing for a daily driver with full options. He's driven the car back and fourth to florida 3 times already...
alot of work, for nothing, when you could buy an authentic cobra from probably as much as you have in that, and it would still have a warranty, and be an authentic cobra. I hope your shop isn't limited to basic engine swaps to make "sleepers".

It depends on the shop. Mechanic Shops really not auto body shops. Yeah the way you tell if they do a good job on engines is by the floor, if it is dirty and oily and they clean it its a good shop. Auto Body shops usually are clean, dirty ones separate them from being a good shop.

Man as awesome as that is don't get me wrong I love me a good sleeper. Wouldn't it have been easier and cheaper just to procharge the 4.6 GT engine and change out the heads and cams and other supporting mods. I am sure that it would have gotten the same amount of power. Yes we do...our tools and minds don't discriminate. A Mustang, SRT8 Charger, Camaro, Infinity, Import etc...the means of making horsepower doesn't change...all the same basic principles apply.

The new ECU must be programmed so it can communicate with the other modules in the car, like the GEM module for the cluster, Antitheft, etc. Then the keys must be re- programmed as well. If any of this is not done, the car won't start, or sometimes it will start initially then shut right off.

nothing.. try again over 560hp and 570 lbs ft tq... is nothing for a daily driver with full options. He's driven the car back and fourth to florida 3 times already...

alot of work, for nothing, when you could buy an authentic cobra from probably as much as you have in that, and it would still have a warranty, and be an authentic cobra. I hope your shop isn't limited to basic engine swaps to make "sleepers".

Obviously you don't understand business.. It is not my job to tell the customer that he shouldn't turn his 05 GT into a GT500... maybe nothing to you.. but it's what he wanted... We make hp from 350 to 3500hp.... so call it what you want to..

I mean, if thats what the customer wanted, that ones thing. I thought this was just you showing off your shops ability. 350hp from 3500 is pretty basic for a 5.4 litre supercharged v8 though... Im not really knocking the quality, not many can do a swap let alone one like that, im just saying, seems like a waste. TT cobra motor into a gt would be nastier.

i didn't say 3500 was pretty basic, and i seriously doubt his shop has produced anything with that power. You don't build 3500 hp motors from a summit mag. I clearly said, "I hope your shop isnt limited to basic motor swaps".

Because that definitely isn't clear in its meaning. And seeing as how his mustang has done 215mph+ in the 1/4, yeah I would say he and his shop is capable of that power.. since his makes WELL over 2000hp. Not trying to start an argument, just saying.

It depends on the shop. Mechanic Shops really not auto body shops. Yeah the way you tell if they do a good job on engines is by the floor, if it is dirty and oily and they clean it its a good shop. Auto Body shops usually are clean, dirty ones separate them from being a good shop.

This is the most intelligent conversion I have ever seen. I HATE the stupid body kit and wheels on the GT500 you can buy from Ford.
Stealth is what it should be about.
The look corvette drivers would get when they got smoked by what they thought was just a normal GT Mustang is worth every cent of this job.
Excellent work on this.
BTW, leave the stock wheels on it and just get some more sticky tires. Keep it looking completely stock.

Man as awesome as that is don't get me wrong I love me a good sleeper. Wouldn't it have been easier and cheaper just to procharge the 4.6 GT engine and change out the heads and cams and other supporting mods. I am sure that it would have gotten the same amount of power. Just asking though lol great job on the car guys it sounds AWESOME!

no because a 4.6 stock limit is 500hp and this can easierly achieve 700hp... plus the kool factor..is applied.
